"The Tigers have been slightly toothless. I thought they might have come here with a bit more determination. They have been opponents but they have been passive opponents."

  3. Manager reactionpublished at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy said: "I just said to the lads, 'well done, it's the last thing we really wanted' - but that was tongue-in-cheek.

"I didn't want to lose, that's for sure. Why can't we have a cup run as well? I came down here and watched Arsenal play and Southampton were worthy winners.

"My players have learned how tough it is playing against a Premier League team and what quality they have. They probably learned a bit about themselves as well and felt they could cope with it - that's as important as anything."

  4. CLOSE!published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Cracking effort from Thomas Ince, powerful half-volley at the end of a jinking run and the ball flashes just over the top.

Arsenal make a change, youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles on in place of Joel Campbell. What a name.

  5. Postpublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

A red card for Francis Coquelin would have marred Arsenal's day, but the midfielder is lucky not to be off. Hull's fans have a long journey back. Their side have played pretty averagely.

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Arsenal have played in second gear most of the second half. They have been more dangerous on the counter and have been the better team."

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

A crazy challenge from Francis Coquelin! He dives into a two-footed tackle on Harry Maguire and is lucky only to see yellow. What was he thinking?

    Ronald KoemanImage source, PA

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, whose side will next play Manchester United on 11 January, Ipswich on 14 January and then Newcastle on 17 January, said: "We have to play the replay and that wasn't what I expected.

"Am I annoyed? Of course, because we can't make a lot of changes in the team and I don't like to make changes. I believe in playing the strongest team.

"What happens now next week I don't know. We have to play three away games, difficult ones, so we will see what happens.

"Ipswich had an unbelievable spirit, 5,000 fans supporting their team and this game was their whole focus. I was afraid for today and the final result shows that because we started sloppy. It is very difficult to change that."

"When he gets the ball Alexis Sanchez is a real genius. Hull have lacked ambition. That's been the biggest disappointment to me."

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Alexis Sanchez gets a few minutes off, replaced by youngster Chuba Akpom. Arsenal cruising in into round four.

"Sanchez has got everything in his game. He is just electric and when he decides he wants to give a little bit more he turns it on and he really is in the peak of his power. It's just so easy for him, he really is on a different level to everyone else out there."

The game's outstanding player caps the win for Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez drops off from the Hull defence to take up a pocket of space on the edge of the box, Santi Cazorla picks him out, Sanchez drifts past the last defender and passes into the bottom corner for his 16th of the season.

    Best signing of last summer?

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Hull are losing 1-0 with 10 minutes to go. They have got to gamble. Take a defender off and throw on another forward. They have got nothing to lose. They might as well lose 2-0 or 3-0."

  15. CLOSE!published at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

How has that stayed out? Wonderful give and go from the newly-arrived Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he frees Alexis Sanchez who burns past Paul McShane and drills it across. Oxlade-Chamberlain can't react quickly enough to steer it in and the ball cannons away off his shins.

    Into the last 10.

"We have seen flashes of Theo Walcott's pace and now we just need his confidence back. He needs to get used to those hard tackles too."

Charles Meyrick:, external Sometimes I wish that Sanchez could pass to Sanchez so that Sanchez could score the chances his creates... sigh

Kuni Poonasamy:, external Wow what a miss by Walcott. I think a bit more matches under his belt Arsenal are going to be flying this half of the season

  18. YELLOW CARDpublished at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Alexis Sanchez is a class above everyone else to be honest, but he goes into the book for over-stretching and treading on Curtis Davies.

Arsenal make a change, one Saints flying machine for another as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlian replaces Theo Walcott. Fifteen minutes left.

  19. Postpublished at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Alexis Sanchez is a big influence. He is a very dangerous player and makes things happen. Hull are solid and determined but they just can't make something happen. They're playing ok as a team but they're not playing with any progression."

  20. Postpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Nervy, nervy! Per Mertesacker takes a wild swing at a cross and is relieved to see it drop into the hands of his keeper David Ospina. Arsenal fashion a half chance at the other end but Hector Bellerin leans back and fires waywardly wide.

Theo Walcott has lost none of his pace, bursting away to almost latch onto Francis Coquelin's pass. Alexis Sanchez then tests Steve Harper from a tight angle. Much better from the Gunners.
