  1. Rooney up front?published at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2015

Louis van Gaal speaking to Match Of The Day before kick-off : "You have to look maybe it's true (about Rooney playing as a striker). Of course. Ander Herrera is a midfielder not a striker so I don't think he will play in the striker's position.

"We know that in advance we have to look to ourselves abut also the quality from the opponents and make decisions.

"They can always make problems for us with the long balls and tall guys and we don't have tall guys. Maybe that's a problem. Also set plays maybe they have scored goals from that. So it's not so easy."

A 19-year-old David Beckham went on loan to Preston in 1994 before establishing himself in the Manchester United side

David Beckham spent just one month on loan at Preston after arriving from Manchester United at the end of February 1995 but the scrawny and quiet 19-year-old made a big impression.

"Frail but confident," was how team-mate David Moyes described him.

He came off the bench to score direct from a corner against Doncaster on his debut and struck a peach of a free-kick in a 3-2 win over Fulham on his first start - the core skills that underpinned his career were clearly already in evidence.

Beckham, with North End paying a portion of his wage and, apparently, stumping up the young midfielder's petrol money, played five games in total before Sir Alex Ferguson decided that a boy had become a man and recalled him to Old Trafford.

PNE missed out on promotion that year - a familiar story of play-off defeat - but the following season Beckham was in the stands at Leyton Orient, sat next to his father Ted, to see his old team-mates celebrate the 2-0 win that ensured they would be going up.

By that time Beckham had become a first-team regular at United and was a month away from winning the FA Cup, defeating Liverpool 1-0 in a stinker of a final, but he never forgot where it all started for him.

Preston boss Simon Grayson will fancy his chances of masterminding an FA Cup upset tonight, given his previous experience of guiding a League One side to victory against Manchester United.

He was Leeds manager in 2010 when Jermaine Beckford's solitary goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

"Every time I go to Leeds, people remind me about it," said Grayson. "It's a different football club, different personnel, but I'll draw from the experience and what a great feeling it was to win at Old Trafford that day.

"You don't get the opportunity to do that very often. I want to try to replicate that if possible. You have to have that belief that you can do it."

Grayson won't be able to call upon Beckford this time, with the striker out for Preston, who he joined in November, because of an ear infection.

  5. Phil Neville Q&Apublished at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2015

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville, who is part of the BBC Sport coverage team at Deepdale, has been answering your questions on Facebook. Here are a selection:

Jake Fursman: Do you think Man United should keep Falcao after his loan finishes?

PN: I think it's a big last couple of months for him. He needs to be performing and scoring goals to earn that move. He had a stuttering start because of injury but now he's on a good run and there's obviously a world class goalscorer there - you can see by his movement. He just needs to put goals in the net and show everyone the real Falcao

David Anthony: Do you think Olivier Giroud is now a world class striker? If not, why?

PN: I don't think he's world class but I do think he's a really good CF and there could be a really good partnership with Danny Welbeck. There's a natural balance between them both. For Giroud, you'd like to see him grab a game by the scruff of the neck, bully centre-backs and score more goals, but he is getting better.

Time had taken its toll on the team of Denis Law, George Best and Bobby Charlton, though the three played that day as Frank O'Farrell's side toiled to a 2-0 victory.

"I've always had the upper hand against him. I stole his tail once and I held it to ransom. I took it everywhere until Manchester United got a bit angry with me and I took it back," he said.

The splendidly attired Roop Singh won't give a final score prediction, but reckons there'll be three goals tonight.

"Either way it's a win-win," he says. "The lads have done us proud - we're bringing one of the biggest teams in the world to our back yard, the epicentre of world football.

"We've got the record win in the FA Cup, 26-0, and we're the only team to win the competition without conceding a goal. No multi-million pound team has ever come close... Man Utd can only DREAM about those records!"

    Deepdale

"Around 4,500 Manchester United fans will fill end up the entire Bill Shankly Kop at Deepdale tonight, and most of them will probably not realise it is decorated with the mosaic of their one-time nemesis, the legendary Liverpool manager who played almost 300 games for North End either side of World War II.

"Whether those same United fans see any silverware secured by their side this season almost certainly exclusively depends on tonight's result and their continuing progress in this competition.

"With the league title looking a distant dream, defeat tonight would realistically mean the earliest end to United's season in terms of the pursuit of a trophy since the 1986-87 campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson's first in charge, when they lost at home to Coventry in the FA Cup fourth round on 31 January."

The key message will be go out and enjoy themselves and that's precisely what Preston manager Simon Grayson will tell them."

Britain's most expensive ever footballer Angel Di Maria graces the Deepdale turf this evening - but who are North End's most expensive players?

Veteran striker Kevin Davies once went for £7.5m - no, he did! - but the League One club have not spent any serious cash on a player for a good few years now.

Their entire squad in action tonight were free transfers or loans.

Cast your mind back to August, and Louis van Gaal's trip to face the MK Dons.

Like tonight, United were heavy favourites against a side from the third tier. Like tonight, the game was live on TV, like tonight it was a chance for 'the minnows' to impress in the shop window.

Nobody saw a 4-0 win for the Dons coming.

Could North End upset the apple cart again?

Preston are in the race for promotion from League One this season, but on paper they have no chance of a result against the mighty Manchester United.

However, try telling that to the 20,000 or so North End fans at Deepdale tonight.

Bradford City - five places and 12 points below Preston in the League One table - have shown what can be done by disposing of Sunderland and Chelsea, and United have their own League One horror tale to remember this season...
