BBC Sport chief football writer at Old Trafford

"England manager Roy Hodgson has taken his seat in the Old Trafford directors' box and will be watching two strikers who will feature heavily in his thoughts as he prepares to name his squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley and the friendly in Italy later this month - captain for club and country Wayne Rooney and Tottenham's Harry Kane.

"Tottenham have also been talking up the claims of left-back Danny Rose as a potential challenger to the likes of Leighton Baines, Luke Shaw and Kieran Gibbs. No doubt he will also be keen to check on the progress of Manchester United defensive duo of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling."

Peter, Rochdale: I was at the United U21 game on Tuesday and Falcao's performance was dreadful. He looked laboured and totally devoid of pace. Get rid!

Narek: At Old Trafford today, and seeing Phil Jones and Chris Smalling partner up in defence, I am sure, boosts the Spurs players' confidence.

"I don't think Falcao has had a real run in the team that's sufficient enough to prove himself. Not putting him on when you are a goal behind, he might as well go back to Monaco because I think his days are numbered here."

Freddie Stewart:, external Louis van Gaal just branded fourth place a trophy. Welcome to the wilderness, United fans.

Anthony Duhig:, external Every time I see a Manchester United team selection at least one LVG decision leaves me mystified. Mata playing right wing?

Adams Ede:, external Just looking at both line-ups. Harry Kane must be smiling from ear to ear.

"Louis van Gaal has an exceptional record. It's obvious that he rubs people up in the wrong way, and whether that is a completely happy camp, I would doubt it. You can tell by the body language of the players. There seems to be something very unsettled about the United players. Van Gaal is getting a lot of stick, but Jose Mourinho finished third last year, and he seemed to get away with it."

  7. Manager reactionpublished at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

    Southampton manager Ronald Koeman:

"It's always difficult to get a good result against Chelsea. The second half was a little bit different to the first.

"The first 45 minutes we had the best chances to score. In the second half, we had more difficulties to keep the ball. To get a good result against Chelsea you need luck.

"We needed a great goalkeeper and we had that today. It was a penalty and the referee made a good decision in the moment."

Will it be six of the best for Tottenham?

  11. Manager reactionpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

Newcastle John Carver manager on being without suspended striker Papiss Cisse: "I got all the strikers together this week and told them they all have an opportunity. When Yoan Gouffran signed for us it was as a centre-forward and he keeps telling me that, so he has an opportunity today. We need someone to step up and score goals for us. Having Jack Colback back is huge for us. He's a massive character. I watched Everton on Thursday, they have a top manager and they are playing some good stuff. They showed great character to come back against Dynamo Kiev."

  12. Manager reactionpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

Everton boss Roberto Martinez: "Newcastle are a real threat because they have really good experience, they are competitive and always come up with a way of being really strong. They will be fresh, very much on the front foot and try to stop us from playing. It should be an open game and it is one we are looking forward to after [beating Dynamo Kiev] on Thursday."

John Southworth:, external Chelsea really lack players coming off the bench and making an impact, you really need those for a long hard season.

Gully:, external It's not about getting loads of points, it's about getting more than the team in second. This weekend we got more than Man City.

Firas:, external Let's not kid ourselves, Chelsea only turned up in the second half. Fair result.

  14. Postpublished at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Juan Mata is back in Manchester United's side to maybe add some of the guile after the slegdehammer tactics that failed to break Arsenal in the latter stages of Monday's FA Cup defeat here. Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling ended up playing together up front in the final stages - the very definition of desperation."

  15. "United's real test will be next year"published at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

    Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Manchester United are still doing alright for a team that hasn't performed well. Louis van Gaal's track record means you have to give him time. He took over a club in disarray. OK the signings haven't been great, but they can still finish in the top four. Next year will be the real test. But they still haven't found a way of playing."

  16. Postpublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on bouncing back from the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal: "When you lose you have to react. On the training ground, the players have already reacted very well. Now we have to react in a match. This is the first match of our rat race with the others teams (chasing Champions League spots). Against your competitors it's important to win."

  17. Postpublished at 15:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live

"Chelsea hoisted the ball into the box late on but Southampton have resisted the pressure and just about deserve their point. Fraser Forster made some good saves but the defenders played well in front of him.

"Southampton played some excellent football in the first-half playing through midfield, but played it longer to Shane Long after half-time.

"Chelsea held the ascendancy in the second half but have just been unable to score. They just couldn't find that incisive pass to create the chances and when they did get the chances they misfired."

  18. Text us on 81111published at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2015

Luke H: Jose Mourinho has to take a lot of the blame for Chelsea not winning. Oscar was poor today as Mourinho left him on for so long that Loic Remy and Juan Cuadrado didn't have enough time to make an impact.

Katy, London: What a great time to be a Saints fan! Such heart, such composure!

Josh: When was the last time Chelsea played well in a game Ramires played in?

Plenty of reaction to the team Louis van Gaal has selected.

Nitin R Menon:, external LVG? What has Rafael got to do to start a game? Why is Valencia starting all the time? Wasn't he filling in at right-back?

Nathan Hingley:, external Was hoping Januzaj and Rafael would start. Good to see Juan Mata start. Fellaini better as a sub.
