  1. You can leave, McHattiepublished at 20:55

Don't think you can all have this level of service, but after seeing a text in asking if Kevin McHattie was on the move in Scotland, I can bring you news.

Hearts have released defender McHattie, with the left-back leaving Tynecastle by mutual consent as he seeks first-team football.

McHattie made more than 80 first-team appearances for Hearts, three of them this term, but he is now a free agent and can speak to other clubs.

  2. No move for Pogbapublished at 20:51

There was no realistic chat about a move for Paul Pogba at all today, which is a shame for a few reasons.

One, he's a belting player and would undoubtedly improve the Premier League.

And two, we couldn't use this lovely graphic.

Interesting day. Mixed emotions about Bradley Johnson’s transfer to Derby: he was outstanding for us last season, but I think he’d struggle to match that form in the Premier League, especially with the competition in midfield. Ricky van Wolfswinkel has left for Real Betis on loan, no real surprises there. I doubt we’ll see him in a Norwich shirt again. We’ve brought in Dieumerci Mbokani from Dinamo Kiev on loan, of whom I know nothing about and Matt Jarvis from West Ham - not on many City fans’ wish lists, especially after some of the names we were linked with. No centre back though. Somewhat underwhelmed all in all.

Michal Koziol:  All those who say Martial's too expensive, those same words were said about a certain Cristiano in 2003.

Michael Griffin:  Apart from Ayew to Swansea, I'm not sure any of the options for the poll will be up there at the end of the season.

Graeme Palin:  As a Spurs fan, you have to admire Peace's stance. Levy took the same stance with Bale. Oh, but we sold him.

  5. 'Money is the key to signing top players'published at 20:40 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Forget the country, the team, and whether they're in the Champions League. For 98 per cent of players, the first question they will ask is: What's the contract? Then it will be: Where am I going to play? Will I play regularly? Who's the manager? But it's the money first of all. Let me tell you. It's the money.

"If Lionel Messi comes up for sale tomorrow, it'd be Paris St-Germain, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. He's going to go for the best contract and where his mates are. He's not going to go to Munich just because, for instance, it's a nicer city to shop in than Manchester.

"The money's not the only thing, but it's the foundation that gets the negotiation to the next stage. As a player, you're not going to play for Barcelona for £20,000 a week if you're earning £100,000 at Manchester City."

Having spent big on deadline days in the past, Liverpool got their main business done early. Forward Christian Benteke completed his £32.5m move from Aston Villa six weeks ago.

Other incomings included forward Roberto Firmino (£21.3m) and right-back Nathaniel Clyne (£10m), with the Reds spending in excess of £67.3m.

No doubt about the biggest exit. Raheem Sterling's departure to Manchester City earned Liveprool £35.2m. The departures of Sebastian Coates, Iago Aspas, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini earned the Reds an additional £20m giving them a net spend of around £12m.

  8. 'Man Utd stance on De Gea is baffling'published at 20:31

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"It's going to be very difficult for David De Gea to get back on track. He's got to do it, though, because he's got Euro 2016 coming up.

"My surprise is that Manchester United have let it get to the last year of his contract. The summer before, when there were two years left, why didn't they sit him down? And if he didn't sign at that point, then sell him. You can't be dictated to if you're Manchester United."

  9. 'Jeremy Peace knows what he wants'published at 20:26

    BBC Radio 5 Live

In the wake of Saido Berahino's collapsed move to Tottenham, Hull City defender Curtis Davies tweeted earlier that he has personal experience of just how tough a negotiator West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace is.

Davies now tells BBC Radio 5 live: "If Jeremy doesn't get the money he wants, he doesn't need to sell anyone to balance the books.

"I don't know what Saido's been told behind the scenes. I don't know if he's been told he can go if the offer reached a certain level.

"But I had a scenario where I was told that I'd be allowed to leave if we didn't go up. I did manage to go, but it went all the way down to the wire on deadline day. I ended up going to Aston Villa.

"It was never a personal thing. It's just that he's a businessman, and he has to run his business in the right way. That's what he chose to do. He got the money and that's what he wanted."

  10. 'Martinez has a blind spot'published at 20:24

    Everton

South American football expert Tim Vickery on BBC Radio 5 live: "It seems to me that Roberto Martinez has a blind spot when it comes to bringing players straight in from South America.

"He dropped an almighty brick with Mauro Boselli at Wigan. He was their record signing, and I don't think he scored a Premier League goal for them. I had a Premier League manager get in contact with me and say: 'Should I buy this player?' There were agents touting him around. I said: 'Don't go anywhere near him. He can't do it in the Premier League and he won't.' Martinez, for all his wisdom and experience, didn't see that.

"You'd have thought, after an experience like that, he'd have been scarred for life, but he's gone back twice. He's brought in Leandro Rodriguez from River Plate in Montevideo, and said that he's played lots of games in a really competitive league. Well if he thinks the Uruguayan league is competitive, he's living in cloud cuckoo land."

  12. 'I feel sorry for Navas'published at 20:17

Times journalist Rory Smith on BBC Radio 5 live:  "I feel sorry for Keylor Navas. He didn't want to leave Real Madrid, was told that he had to because it was presented to him as a fait accompli, and now he has to go back to a club that doesn't really want him."

Keylor Navas was being sent to Manchester United as part of the David De Ge deal.

  13. 'Everton fans are frustrated'published at 20:17 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Everton fans are frustrated because they went big with Lukaku, making a statement, and this summer they haven't spent as much, and it's not one big player. On one hand, they're saying they can develop John Stones, but they're not matching that ambition with the players they are bringing in."

  15. 'Mori is not good enough'published at 20:13

Everton sign Ramiro Funes Mori for £9.5m

South American football expert Tim Vickery on BBC Radio 5 live: "I would love to be wrong about Ramiro Funes Mori. But the only really good thing I can say about him is that language is not going to be a problem. That's important for defenders, because defending is nothing if it's not collective. When Argentina's economy tanked in 2001, Mori's family relocated to Dallas, Texas. He grew up there and speaks very good English as a result.

"He's left-sided, and he can play left-back as well. But I don't think he has the quality, the physicality or the pace to survive in the Premier League."

What a difference 24 hours can make! From frustration to jubilation. Very pleased with the re-signing of Alex Song on loan. I think he will thrive under Bilic and give our midfield some serious class. I'm also very excited about Victor Moses and Michail Antonio. They will both add to our pacey counter attack and hopefully they will score a few goals too. Jelavic wouldn't have been my first choice if I was looking to buy a striker from the Championship but we badly needed a striker and he has, at least, a history of scoring goals in the Premier League.

The final day of the transfer window saw the Hornets make two permanent and one loan signing, whilst three of last season's promoted side departed on loan. The first of these saw Mexican utility man Miguel Layun join Porto early this morning; that this feels like an awfully long time ago is the consequence of a frantic deadline day thoroughly in keeping with a summer that has seen 15 players signed, 13 depart and well over 100 linked. The popular return of Adlene Guedioura has offset some of the disappointment in players not retained; most Watford supporters will now welcome a dark, quiet room to lay down in for a bit.

It was all about a question of timing at Manchester United. One deal failed to go through after the deadline was missed while another incoming move left some scratching their head.

The £36m signing of Monaco forward Anthony Martial, making him the world's most expensive teenage footballer, has provoked lots of opinion, with midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin among the others to arrival.

Among those heading in the opposite direction were forward Robin van Persie and Nani - both to Fenerbahce. Nani's fee was £4.25m.

As for the saga surrounding keeper David De Gea's failed move to Real Madrid....I get the feeling this is going to rumble on and on.
