The acquisition of Gerard Deulofeu and Tom Cleverley represented a positive start to the transfer window but Evertonians were fervently hoping for the creative attacking midfielder and striking reinforcements that Roberto Martinez had highlighted as priorities for the summer, so they will justifiably feel somewhat let down this evening. Ramiro Funes Mori will provide much-needed defensive cover, striker Leandro Rodriguez could possibly contribute at senior level and Aaron Lennon is a sensible move given his positive contributions on loan last season, but the team still lacks genuine quality in key areas and that may limit Everton’s European aspirations.

Tiago Ilori - [Liverpool - Aston Vila] Loan

    Phil McNulty

Still time for this one though. Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori joins Aston Villa on a season-long loan. I believe loan fee is £1m - option to buy which could be at £6-9m.

Despite making some decent additions to their squad during the main part of the transfer window, Cherries supporters will be left feeling a little underwhelmed with events on deadline day. Glenn Murray will prove to be a very shrewd acquisition and despite his age, has a decent pedigree at Premier League level. Joe Bennett gives much needed cover at left back, but was the Aston Villa defender's six-month loan a panic move? However, it's the players that didn't arrive that have been the major talking points with Jonathan de Guzman’s loan collapsing and Lewis Grabban’s return not materialising either.

From Neil: Read a comment from someone suggesting John Stones is at a small club. Well he's at a club big enough to resist repeated offers from an even smaller but "new money" club. "If Y'know Your History"...

From Matt in Derby:  Levy needs to know that Spurs fans are calling for his head louder than ever now. He's failed to back his manager yet again, but will no doubt sack him if we continue our poor form. How can Pochettino be expected to compete with only one recognised striker in the squad?

Ola John (Benfica - Reading) Loan

Reading have confirmed the signing of Dutch forward Ola John from Benfica .

The 23-year-old will spend the season on loan at the Championship club.

John made one appearance for Holland in 2013 and is the younger brother of former Fulham striker Collins John.

Pleased with the defensive reinforcements but think the lack of an experienced premiership striker is going to be a big hinderance. Was a shame the Adebayor deal could not get done. I can't see any of the current strikers getting 15+ goals so are really going to rely on the likes of Gil, Grealish, Traore and Sinclair to wade in with the goals.

Deadline day and one season-long loan signing in Nathan Dyer as cover for Mahrez & Albrighton but other than that it appears LCFC happy with business it did earlier in season, avoiding transfer deadline day price hikes. Taking the window as a whole for LCFC one word - happy with our seven signings. Good signings and good prices.

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"I've been in very few dressing rooms where one player's contract dispute affects the rest of the team. It's disappointing to lose a mate, and if they're going on to bigger and better things, you wish them all the best. But if you're a player, ultimately you're looking after yourself."

  9. Will Wenger pay for quiet window?published at 19:51

    Arsenal's transfer window

There were more outgoings than incomings at Arsenal - to the dismay of some Gunners fans. Hopes of a marquee signing to top the £10m arrival of keeper Petr Cech failed to materialise.

Arsenal's spending in this window was £13m plus - a fraction of what their title rivals invested.

Among those leaving was forward Lukas Podolski to Galatasaray for a fee of £1.8m. There were plenty of undisclosed fees but net spend was around £11m plus.

  11. 'A deplorable lack of ambition'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

What the fans think: Tottenham Hotspur

    Quote Message

Spurs’ failure to sign another striker or an experienced midfielder signals a deplorable lack of ambition that could stifle the development of a young squad full of potential and leaves us vulnerable to competitors. The right men in these two positions could make a significant difference but chairman Daniel Levy, the so-called shrewd negotiator, catastrophically misjudged a market flush with TV cash. Teams no longer have to cave in because they just don’t need the money. Another window, yet another missed opportunity. Today’s desperate Berahino or bust shambles obscures concerns that Spurs’ overhaul of scouting and recruitment failed to find alternatives. The club site’s pathetic attempt to solve the problem by reclassifying Heung-Min Son as a striker did not play well with frustrated and furious fans. Now let’s get behind the team. COYS

    West Brom

    Quote Message

Most Baggies' fans are disappointed by today's lack of activity at The Hawthorns, especially the fact that the club have failed to add any real pace or creativity to the team. More worrying is Saido Berahino throwing a tantrum and stating he won't play for the club again after Albion once again turned down a bid from Spurs for him. Without Berahino our striking options look pretty poor with only Rondon, Lambert and the injury-prone Anichebe available. The outgoings were as expected with Lescott moving to Villa and Ideye departing for Olympiakos. One or two more will probably depart on loan once that window opens.

That is very interesting from Danny Murphy. It shows the difference between public and private outbursts when it comes to how a player is possibly perceived.

Murphy got his move in the end though, and you'd have to fancy Saido Berahino to still get his at some point.

  16. 'I've been in Berahino's shoes'published at 19:39

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Regarding the Saido Berahino situation, I've been in this position myself. I didn't go public in the way that Berahino has done, but I have said something similar to a chairman in a huff, about not wanting to play for a certain club again. And in the end, I did get my move. I don't know if I'd have been able to follow it through by refusing to play. But I don't regret saying it, because I wouldn't have got that move otherwise.

"I didn't play for that club again, and I was made to sign a form when I left that I wouldn't talk about what happened. But because I've been through it, I've been very reluctant to cane Berahino."

    Martin Keown
Football Analyst on BBC Football Focus

Keeping John Stones is a victory for Everton. They won’t be bullied and pushed into a corner. Fair play to them. Hopefully everyone has his interests at heart, he’s still a young man. Everton fans will still sing his name, he will be a hero. I’d rather that than sitting on the bench at Chelsea with uncertainty. He put in a transfer request, his head was definitely turned. That gave Everton the chance to sell him but they didn’t want the money.
