As we've become used to in recent years, no major moves on deadline day. The lack of incoming signings is to be expected, but more of a surprise was the failure to offload some of the fringe players and recoup a bit of outlay. Getting the likes of Yoan Gouffran and Mike Williamson off the wage bill would have been seen as a positive by most fans. As it is, we seem reasonably well equipped for a decent season, but the hope will be that this is a rebuilding exercise and not a sticking plaster over our near-relegation in May. Newcastle need this level of investment consistently over two or three windows to become fully competitive in the top half of the table.

Glenn Murray ended a successful four-year spell at Palace by leaving for Bournemouth. Most wanted him to stay but many agree that £4m for a 32-year-old is good business. Mile Jedinak was on the brink of signing for Stoke but could not agree personal terms. Having already lost Murray, losing a second big character from our promotion season might have been a disaster. Dwight Gayle also remained with the club after looking like he would join Norwich. He now has until January to play himself into Pardew’s plans, the same goes for Joe Ledley. Meanwhile, Chelsea exacted revenge for Saturday’s loss by swooping in and stealing Michael Hector from under our noses.

    Chelsea's transfer window

It was anything but quiet at Chelsea during the transfer window. There were 10 incomings with the top three in price terms being forward Pedro (£21m), defender Baba Rahman (£14m) and keeper Asmir Begovic (£8m).

In total Chelsea spent more than £64m.

Among those heading out of Stamford Bridge permanently were Felipe Luis (£11.1m) and keeper Petr Cech (£10m). They raked in more than £35m giving a net spend of plus £29m.

Deadline day for Southampton was fairly uneventful, with only one incoming and no departures from the club. The day saw a conclusion to the club’s long-term pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, with the Dutch defender first coming onto the radar around 12 months ago. Despite unnecessary drama from certain quarters, Saints retained both Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan midfielder would do well to heed boss Ronald Koeman’s advice and learn from Morgan Schneiderlin. With application, he too can do better than a move to Spurs next summer. Overall though, a day of positives for supporters of Southampton.

As I predicted, it’s been a pretty quiet day at the Liberty stadium. The only slight surprise was the departure of Nathan Dyer on a season long loan to Leicester. Dyer has been a fans' favourite but has fallen out of favour with the arrival of Andre Ayew. I would expect to see Mo Barrow come back from his loan spell at Blackburn and provide the cover now Dyer is gone. Am I happy? Yes because we’ve kept our best players & are now ready to push for a top 6 spot!

Emmanuel Adebayor has been frozen out at Tottenham. They tried to move him on today. Spurs were trying to terminate his deal, but he dug his heels in. He wants a £5m pay-off.

Part of me really admires the neck on Adebayor...

  9. De Gea updatepublished at 19:20

Manchester United have been moved to put out a statement on the failed transfer of David De Gea to Real Madrid. It's all a bit embarrassing and petty to be honest.

    Some selected highlights:

    • Manchester United did not seek contact from Real Madrid for the sale of David. David is a key member of our squad and the club’s preference was not to sell
    • At 22:40 BST, minutes before the deadline, major changes to the documentation came through to Manchester United which immediately put the deals at risk.
    • Manchester United acts appropriately and efficiently in its transfer dealings.

    So there.

    Man City's transfer window

So this transfer window was the richest in Premier League history with more than £850m spent for the first time. And a large percentage of that came from the deep pockets at Manchester City.

There were five major signings in this window at the Etihad - midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (£54.5m), Raheem Sterling (£44m), Fabian Delph (£8m) and Patrick Roberts (£2m). The £28.4m purchase of defender Nicolas Otamendi took their spending to £136.9m.

Outgoings? There were plenty with forward Alvaro Negredo fetching the biggest sum as Valencia paid £22m. City pulled in £46.9m giving them a net spend of £90m.

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"In terms of the signings that have been made, it's been an exciting window. There's some quality coming into the league, and that will ad some spice to the games after the international break. The final day has been uneventful, but I think that it's been a good window. Crystal Palace, West Ham and Swansea have made astute signings, and I think that will make for a more exciting league."

    Quote Message

So in the end it was a fairly quiet day for Stoke. We did the important thing which was to keep Jon Walters at the club (he's taken it very well) and while it was unfortunate not get Mile Jedinak in it's not the end of the world. Some may be disappointed by the lack of activity but it really highlights the quality job done earlier in the window. The club has lost key talents in Nzonzi and Asmir Begovic and released a number of important players around the club. Mark Hughes and the management team replaced these players with improvements and addressed the key areas of the squad so there was no need for movement today.

  14. Martial signing is a 'gamble'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

Football journalist Henry Winter on BBC News Channel: "There’s a touch of desperation about Manchester United's signing of Anthony Martial. They need pace and goals around Wayne Rooney. It is a gamble, particularly as they’re giving him the iconic number nine shirt.

"David De Gea is a professional. He’s got to knuckle down and become Spain’s number one keeper going into Euro 2016, but from here instead of Madrid."

From Sheldon:  Thing no one is mentioning re Anthony Martial ... is he cup-tied in Europe having played for Monaco in the Champions League already???

The answer is no. Martial played for Monaco in their play-off defeat against Valencia - but Uefa Champions League regulation 42.07 states that "a player who has been fielded in the first, second, third qualifying round or the play-offs of the Uefa Champions League or Uefa Europa League is entitled to play in the Uefa Champions League or Uefa Europa League for another club as from the group stage."

If you had told Chelsea fans that before the end of transfer deadline day their club had bought two new players they would struggle to contain broad smiles on their faces. However, the names Papy Djilobodji and Michael Hector have caused more than a few quizzical looks instead. Both in their mid-twenties and both signed for less than some of the Chelsea youth products at centre-back are probably worth; namely full internationals Andreas Christensen, Tomas Kalas and Keneth Omeruo. More and more the realisation is setting in that Chelsea's squad policy consists of high profile signings, buy-to-loans and academy afterthoughts. The loan count? 33!

Nathan Dyer - [Swansea - Leicester]

The £863m spent in this transfer window is roughly the same as the gross domestic product of Antigua and Barbuda. It is about £100m more than the total cost of Wembley Stadium. It would also buy you almost five fully-staffed super yachts. It is also just short of the profit made by the UK retail operation of technology company Apple in 2014-15.
