Joleon Lescott has completed his medical at Aston Villa ahead of signing from West Brom. He`ll be Tim Sherwood`s 11th signing of the summer window and there could be more to come. Villa are still being linked with a late move to bring Emanuel Adebayor to the club on a season-long loan from Spurs after his move to West Ham earlier this summer fell through.

A slightly longer shot is Dimitar Berbatov, who is a free agent and has also been linked with a return to the Premier League. Berbatov is close friends with former Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov.

While we are on Football League matters, here is a good tale involving Middlesbrough's pursuit of Uruguayan winger Carlos de Pena, told by Tim Vickery on 5 live...

There is one great story. It involves Middlesbrough and a left winger called Carlos de Pena. He is a busy little player. On Saturday it looked like this deal was on so he was taken out of Nacional's squad. On Sunday, the deal had collapsed. All over. On Monday, the club get a call from his agent saying he is on his way to England but the club said no. The player drove off and promptly got himself in a car accident with him and his mother in the car. Nothing serious as he is allowed out of hospital pretty soon after and he leaves his mum there, goes back to the airport and without Nacional's permission flies to Middlesbrough. I can't remember anyone being so desperate to get to Middlesbrough since Chris Rea was driving home for Christmas.

  5. Man Utd make their move...published at 12:05

... but this one is not quite of Anthony Martial proportions.

United have made a £100,000 offer for Newport County’s Wales youth defender Regan Poole in a deal that could rise to £400,000.

The Wales under-17 international is travelling to United's Carrington training ground this lunchtime for a medical with the Premier League giants.

Newport have also rejected an improved £65,000 transfer deadline-day offer from Championship club Burnley for teenage striker Aaron Collins.

Poole, who had been on trial at United and Liverpool, was the subject of a £60,000 plus add-ons bid from Championship side Hull over the weekend - while Brighton are also interested in the 17-year-old centre-back.

Now then. Phil Dawkes here. Mike is heading off for a well-earned rest so I'll be seeing you through the next few hours.

Right, what have I missed? Well, not that much so far, although West Ham have made an early play to capture the iron throne and be crowned king of Deadline Day.

With six hours still to go, there is plenty of time for someone to swoop in on the Blackwater and try to take the title. Some Game of Thrones references for you there.

Six hours. If you are a west coast MLS star wanting a Premier League move and haven't left home now, don't bother.

These are the big headlines so far today.

Manchester United are set to complete the £36m signing of 19-year-old Monaco forward Anthony Martial.

David De Gea's £29m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has collapsed.

Everton have signed defender Ramiro Funes Mori from Argentine club River Plate for £9.5m on a five-year deal.

West Ham have signed midfielder Alex Song on a season-long loan from Barcelona and added Chelsea's Victor Moses on a similar deal.

    Nikica Jelavic to West Ham

    Simon March
    Fantasy Football Champion

"Nikica Jelavić is already something of a fantasy football cult hero following his blistering salvo of nine goals in the closing months of Everton’s 2011-12 season. His form declined however and he was unable to maintain that prolific output in later seasons either for Everton or, subsequently, Hull City.

"Memories of that slump and the heavy competition among West Ham forwards mean that it will likely be only the fantasy football romantics looking to draft Jelavic into their squads."

We have not seen this line anywhere yet in the British press, but Turkish outlet Fotospor claim that West Ham, external are set to make a £6.6m offer for Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz.

The 30-year-old has been prolific in Turkish football and at one point in the 2012-13 season was outscoring both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League.

"Physically strong and good in the air, this limited defender is not exactly a marquee signing and is rated by FM as being no more than a good Championship level player with little scope for improvement. He’s valued at just over £1m and can be bought from Nantes for little over that. In my longest save, he never leaves the French club and never averages over 7.00 in a season, suggesting that Chelsea’s mooted purchase is a little panicky.

Jose Mourinho has accused teams of trying to buy the title and he is watching Manchester City and United splashing the cash. Chelsea have a net spend of around £12m. He is thinking that his side have had a bad start to the season and he needs to kick-start it. Will he do this by spending around £90m on Pogba? That negotiation is not over. Rumours are fueled by Juventus, who have brought in a new midfielder. It seems unrealistic but anything can happen.

  19. 'United & Madrid looking daft'published at 11:28

Earlier today we asked you to send in your questions about transfer deadline day for former Everton and Republic of Ireland winger Kevin Kilbane.

Anthony Townerasked: "Why are two of the biggest clubs in the world acting so childishly? They've had all summer to sort the David De Gea transfer.

Kevin says: "It’s ridiculous that it’s come to this. After all the talk over the summer, all of a sudden you haven’t got the paperwork in time. It does make two of the biggest clubs in the world look silly.

"Why can’t clubs do their business early? The problem is it’s all so cat and mouse; can you save a few million, can you hold out for the best possible fee, knowing De Gea is in the last year of his contract?

"But it does make the whole transfer window look daft when clubs like these act in the manner they have done. And where does this leave De Gea himself? How can United have a player of his ability sitting on the bench? His value is diminishing by the day."
