"Everton, having announced the capture of Argentine defender Ramiro Funes Mori, will now try to sort out some other business and it is likely they will have Tottenham's Aaron Lennon on their agenda before the deadline passes.

"The 28-year-old had a successful spell at Everton last season and is out of contract next summer. He is keen to return to Goodison Park and word is manager Roberto Martinez would be happy to have him back.

"It would be no surprise to see a deal agreed for a player who has been frozen out by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino."

Saido Berahino and Tottenham clearly want it to happen but there has been one rejected transfer request and two rejected offers.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace is as tough a negotiator as they come so it will be intriguing to see how any further talks pan out with the equally hardline Daniel Levy at Spurs.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino sees him as a neat fit alongside Harry Kane and the pair would dovetail well, with Berahino's pace giving Spurs an added extra while both can drop deep and be dangerous.

"Monaco's Joao Moutinho was the key player he is said to have missed out on.

    Nick Barnes

"Sunderland’s capture of Fabio Borini is expected to be the last significant business in the transfer window but the club will be chasing the loan signing of a defender, most likely a left back as cover for Patrick van Aanholt, while there may be a few more departures with Steven Fletcher linked with a possible move to Celtic.

"The club are also keen to move on the likes of Valentin Roberge, Will Buckley and Liam Bridcutt."

    Anthony MartialImage source, Reuters

There are some reassuring noises coming out of Manchester United about Monaco striker Anthony Martial not being a panic buy but rather Louis van Gaal having been monitoring him for some time.

If true, it seems no-one bothered to ask captain Wayne Rooney his opinion on his potential strike-partner.

Footage hasemerged of United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin speaking to French television, external on Monday about Rooney's reaction to speculation linking Martial to United.

"To be honest, yesterday on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak," said Schneiderlin.

"I told him he’s a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the beginning of this."

  9. How much?!published at 10:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Everton announced earlier that have paid £9.5m to sign River Plate's Argentine central defender Ramiro Funes Mori.

"It is a figure that may raise a few eyebrows as the deal has recently been touted as being worth £5.5m, then £6.25m - but nothing as high as £9.5m.

"It represents a gamble, at that stated price certainly, for a defender who, according to reports from South America, may take some time to adapt to the pace and tempo of the Premier League.
