Fifa are assessing the collapse of David De Gea’s transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

Any appeal regarding the deal would need to be judged by the Spanish FA.

Reports suggest that Manchester United were left hanging by Real Madrid after entering all the relevant information into Fifa's Transfer Matching System.

It is not the first time the Romelu Lukaku has been at the centre of a spurious social media transfer storm.

Earlier this summer, Manchester United attacker Memphis Depay posted a picture on Instagram of him chatting with Lukaku, adding "see you soon".

Obviously an early hint at a £35m move to Old Trafford.

  7. Where are you off to, Romelu?published at 09:28

Now, looking only at the facts, the photo below shows a man walking into/out of a car park. But because today is transfer deadline day, it's got people talking.

Maybe Romelu Lukaku's filled up a carry-all with his weekly shop, maybe he's on his way into his local leisure centre for a swim.

Maybe he's just on his way to Belgium for international duty. But at this stage of the day, there's still plenty of time to abandon yourself to wild speculation.

Chelsea youngster Lucas Piazon, having had loan stints at Malaga and Eintracht and the obligatory trip to Vitesse Arnhem, has signed a temporary deal with Reading.

Virgil van Dijk (linked with Southampton)

"This well-rounded, ball-playing defender has excellent physical stats and good composure, determination and tackling. Valued at £4m at the game’s outset, he can be prised from Celtic for around £5m and has the potential to be a very good Premier League defender. In my game, he moved to Monaco for £9.5m after one further season at Celtic and averaged 7.12 across five seasons for a very healthy career. His rumoured move to Southampton could be a very good deal for the Saints.

    Southampton and Bournemouth

    Quote Message

This summer was always more about evolution than revolution, with Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin the only two to depart. The loan signing of Maarten Stekelenburg covers Fraser Forster’s injury, with Steven Caulker also given another shot at the top flight. Cedric Soares looks a promising replacement for Clyne, while the £5m signing of Oriol Romeu may be the club’s best bit of business this summer. The Spaniard has looked comfortable and commanding in his outings to-date. Virgil van Dijk looks like being the only potential addition at St. Mary’s today, while Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama will both remain on the south coast.

Bournemouth have strengthened throughout their squad, although three unfortunate injuries in Saturday’s draw with Leicester could affect Eddie Howe’s business before the window slams shut. Two of his marquee signings – Tyrone Mings and Max Gradel – left the field on a stretcher, meaning reinforcements may now be required. The deal to sign Dutch midfielder Jonathan de Guzman is expected to be completed as is the capture of another forward because Callum Wilson aside, the Cherries' striking department still looks a little lightweight despite a promising debut for Lee Tomlin.

    Everton defender John Stones

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Chelsea's defence suddenly looks in need of a refit with John Terry 35 later this year, Gary Cahill's form indifferent and Branislav Ivanovic looking vulnerable.

In Stones, Chelsea believed they would be getting one of England's most accomplished rising stars, an asset for now and the next decade. This would not just be an instant upgrade but a long-term investment."

"David De Gea isn't the only player who is suffering today due to paperwork not being submitted in time.

"Roberto Soriano was all set to move to Napoli from Sampdoria and Gazetta Dello Sport say everything was sorted at precisely 21:16 last night. Camillo Zuniga was set to go the other way as part of the deal.

"But then they noticed 'a formal error' in the contracts and faced a race against time to redo the documents.

"Sadly for Soriano, Gazetta say they were submitted to Serie A officials four minutes late."

    David De Gea

    Simon March
    Fantasy Football Champion

"Fantasy football managers will have mixed feelings about the news of David De Gea’s move to Real Madrid falling through. While he offers a relatively cheap route into a strong United defence, him staying negates the appeal of the even cheaper Sergio Romero, who has delivered three clean sheets already this season.

"De Gea has proven his worth as a fantasy football asset but, until his future role in the team is clarified, managers are likely to steer clear for now."

As transfer windows go, this has been one of the most interesting and busy for Leicester City. Gokhan Inler is the stand-out signature. Billed as Cambiasso's replacement, it shows how far we have come as a club that we can sign a player of his stature. Up front Charlie Austin would be a good addition, but he may go elsewhere, other than that one more right back as cover for Ritchie De Laet and attacking midfielder would be the final additions to a strong squad. Oh and holding onto Riyad Mahrez would be our best bit of transfer business.

It's been a decent summer for the Baggies but I'm hoping we will complete a deal for long-term target Matt Phillips of QPR. We desperately need an injection of pace into the squad and former Blackpool winger Phillips fits the bill perfectly. If we can add Phillips, or a player of his ilk to the squad, and keep hold of Saido Berahino, an attacking central midfielder would perhaps be our only other requirement. Joleon Lescott looks set to depart for Aston Villa and I'd expect to see a number of 'fringe' players leaving - the likes of Anichebe, Ideye, Pocognoli and Sessegnon.
