“French newspaper L'Equipe have been explaining why Erik Lamela's move to Marseille fell through., external

"They say the two clubs agreed a deal (loan with an option to buy) but in the end Tottenham pulled out because they hadn't signed a replacement for the Argentine attacking midfielder.

"L'Equipe claim that Lamela's move depended on Saido Berahino heading to White Hart Lane.

"It's more frustration for Marseille fans who had to say goodbye to flair players like Andre Ayew, Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin this summer.”

  2. 'I'm scratching my head'published at 08:08

Glenn Hoddle seems a little bemused by Manchester United's dealings over the last 24 hours, judging by these comments he's given to Zapsportz:, external

"I'm scratching my head that Manchester United have let Javier Hernandez go and brought in this youngster from Monaco for £36m. They should have kept the “Little Pea" and also bought someone. They are so short of strikers, I just don’t understand why they have sold Hernandez."

  3. What next for De Gea? The agent's viewpublished at 08:05

    David De GeaImage source, PA

Spanish football agent Esteve Calzada has been talking to BBC Sport about goalkeeper David De Gea's seemingly failed transfer to Real Madrid from Manchester United. What could happen next?

"I don’t think there any examples in the past of deals like this still going through after the deadline. My experience is that once these things have happened there is nothing you can do to turn around the situation, even if you are a very powerful team.

"It was a transfer that was in the news for the whole summer, and now we are facing a weird situation because there is disappointment on all fronts. And De Gea is able to go on a free next season.

"But let’s see what happens, I would not rule out him signing a new contract with United."

Remember David De Gea's Madrid-based girlfriend Edurne Garcia described Manchester as "uglier than the back of a fridge, external" . That is going to a tricky conversation around the breakfast table.

  5. Chelsea knocked back for Manolas?published at 07:57

Chelsea's pursuit of John Stones seems to be over after Jose Mourinho reportedly decided that he could go to £30 but no further for the 21-year-old Everton defender.

Senegal international Papy Djilobodji is instead set to sign for the Blues from Nantes in a £4m deal.

But was he even second choice for the champions?

The business done by Tim Sherwood has been good and the amount that has been reinvested has been a big surprise, given the club is still up for sale. I would be happy with a mid-table finish but still feel we are short an experienced centre back and a proven Premier League striker. Both Charlie Austin and Joleon Lescott as (back-up) would fill these gaps well.

Stoke's transfer window has been a busy one and seems rather astutely done from Mark Hughes. We've strengthened the squad all over the pitch and have a depth that we lacked last season when injuries struck. So that said I'm hoping for a fairly quiet deadline day, keeping Jon Walters will be key and the only other position we might need is extra depth at left back so I wouldn't mind the transfer team having a chat with Ashley Cole.

  9. Arsenal in for Cavani?published at 07:48

Arsenal fans were teased and tormented with talk of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema coming to north London in this transfer window.

But just like in the past two summers, the trail has gone cold. Benzema himself squashed the speculation flat with this tweet:

So far Petr Cech is the only addition to the first team squad but Wenger said last week that he is "always confident that a last-minute situation or solution is available".

Two years ago, the Frenchman pulled a Mesut Ozil-shaped rabbit out of the hat on deadline day though.

The Daily Mail claim that Paris St-Germain's striker Edinson Cavani  , externaland team-mate Adrien Rabiot are Arsenal targets today, although admit that "a deal for Cavani looks unlikely given the complexities of such a high-profile transfer".

Chelsea's horrific start to the season - and it can only be described as horrific - has in large part been due to a failure stretching back to last summer in which the club, or Jose, has been unable to retain, identify or sign an extra midfielder or two to rest a now rather flat looking first XI - Pedro arrived a little too late. Expect more youngsters and squad players to depart on loan (probably 30+ in total by the end of the day) but I suspect unless John Stones and/or Paul Pogba arrive for astronomic sums, Chelsea's transfers dealings are done for 2015. The fans would love one of our own academy players to step up in any event.

I’ve got mixed feelings about our business this summer. I’ve been delighted with the signings of Dimitri Payet and Angelo Ogbonna as well as the loan signings of Manuel Lanzini and Carl Jenkinson. But our failure to land another striker has been a huge frustration. We desperately need to sign a proven Premier League goalscorer before the window closes. Apart from Diafra Sakho, we have no-one else to lead the line until Mauro Zarate, Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia return from injury. It’s a ridiculous position to be in.

Marseille lost nine key players including Andre Ayew and Dimitri Payet during this transfer window so the final 24 hours was frenetic at the Stade Velodrome.

The new faces included Paolo De Ceglie and Mauricio Isla on loan from Juventus.

And when you can't sign Ronaldo how about signing Rolando? Marseille completed the signing of the Portuguese defender from Porto on a free transfer.

Much to the fans' dismay though, they didn't sign a new striker.

With their Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji set to join Chelsea, Nantes brought in Albanian international Lorik Cana on a two year deal.

They also signed Youssouf Sabaly from PSG on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Brazilian defender Pablo joined Bordeaux on a four year deal from Gremio.

And a sell on clause means Lyon are set to receive some of the Anthony Martial transfer money from Manchester United.

That's because he started his career in the club's academy. Some of the cash has already been spent on midfielder Sergi Darder from Malaga, Olivier Kemen from Newcastle and youngster Lucas Tousart from Valenciennes.

  13. Martial for £36m? £11m more like...published at 07:38

So is Anthony Martial worth the £36m Manchester United are about to pay for him? Not according to the Soccerrex Football Value Index, external, a report published as recently as July.

The report looked at the 20 most valuable players aged 20 or under in Europe. Martial came in 17th, with an estimated value of £11.3m, less than a third of the fee he could move for today.

One place above him in the list was Everton defender John Stones at £12.35m.

They might have undercooked those valuations a little.

"Manchester United have backed themselves into a corner. Everyone knows they are absolutely desperate to get players in."

"I have been a critic of Louis van Gaal for a long time I still don’t know what he is doing.

"They feel like a feeder club for Real Madrid. Nothing feels right. There is no plan, no pattern. I cannot see what direction he is taking the club. I don’t get what he is doing."

    Quote Message

Manchester United have brought in a great bunch of players this summer but there are still areas in need of strengthening. Will signing Monaco's Anthony Martial answer the need for a proven goalscorer? He is 19, not a proven goalscorer and has a more difficult league to adapt to. The club, yet again, is leaving it to the last minute but considering the players brought in and deadwood sold, fans should be pleased.

I'm very pleased with the acquisitions City have made this summer and I personally can't see any other major activity happening before the end of the transfer window - nor would I wish it. I'm just hoping that we don't end up selling one of our valuable players, such as Samir Nasri, before the window shuts to try to fund what we've spent so far.
