And that is that for tonight's Champions League coverage. City were superb, United did what they had to do. One is through, the other has given themselves a great chance of following suit.

Back to tonight and Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas broke a record.

He has now gone longer than any keeper to go without conceding a goal since making their Champions League debut. So in his six games, conceding no goals takes him past the 529 minutes Miguel Angel Moya managed when he made his debut in the tournament for Atletico Madrid.

And so attention switches to tomorrow night, which sees two more English sides in action as part of another eight-game Champions League extravaganza.

Arsenal are at Bayern Munich, looking to seal what would be a stunning double over the German champions. The Gunners are bottom of Group F but would go level on points with leaders Bayern if they win.

Meanwhile, Chelsea host Dynamo Kiev. The Blues are third in Group G with four points, behind Kiev (five points) and Porto (seven points).

The only other qualification place decided tonight came in Group A, where 10-time winners Real Madrid sealed their progress with a 1-0 win over filthy-rich French side Paris St-Germain. Real have 10 points, PSG seven, with Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo (which ended 4-0 to the former tonight)on three each.

Group C is closing to a conclusion, with Benfica's 2-1 win over Galatarsaray meaning they are top with nine points, two points ahead of Atletico Madrid (who drew 0-0 at FC Astana). Galatasaray have four points, Astana two.

Francis Edwards: City beat an average Spanish side and now they think they can win the league but don't want to be drawn against the big teams.

Sam Sene: Remember how the press were crying about how badly English teams were doing in the Champions League.

Matt Catchpole: I've grown a beard since #ManUtd, external last scored a goal - what a relief to finally get a win!

So, United are top of Group B, City are top of Group D and already through to the last 16.

United's next Champions League game is at home against second-placed PSV ahead of a final-game trip to Wolfsburg. Both those teams have six points, two ahead of CSKA. As Goldmember said, it's tiiiiight. Like a tiger.

City's nine points is enough to ensure qualification, with third-placed Sevilla having just three points to their name. Only Juventus (eight points) can prevent them winning the group. City travel to Juve next before facing Borussia Monchengladbach in their final game at the Etihad.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini:"It is very important to qualify for the next stage, now we will try to qualify in first position. I'm happy with the way we played, we scored three goals, missed three of four clear chances to score, and we defended well.

"I was not happy with the way we were playing in the previous games, so I'm happy with our form tonight.

"The three midfielders - Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and Fernando - played well, pressed higher and our attack was really prepared. We played with one touch and moved into space, that was the reason we created so many chances."

    Man United 1-0 CSKA Moscow

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who was told his side had put in a good performance on BT Sport: "A good performance? Thank you for the compliment. It is unbelievable because we have created at least 12 chances and had to wait a long time. Before that they could have scored and then it is a different match. I am happy. We played well."

Like Manchester City, Real Madrid are celebrating a place in the knockout stages. They had 13 shots to 15 by Paris St-Germain - who hit the woodwork twice - but Nacho's goal got the job done.

PSG - second in the group - have a four-point cushion over Shakhtar in third, so they should still make it.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany: "The first feeling is 'finally'. It's a difficult group and to qualify with two games spare is an incredible achievement. We now have to try and finish first in group, so will try to do that."

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling: "It was a special goal for me, but most important thing was the way the team played."

"Louis van Gaal will be feeling smug. When we knew Fellaini was coming on I thought it would be interesting as to who would come off. Maybe Wayne Rooney. It didn't cross my mind it would be Martial.

"The manager will say look 'this is the guy who can score goals,' so you can absolutely see his thinking. Are these Manchester United fans coming out and thinking 'in Van Gaal we trust' now?

As I suggested earlier, a toothless attack makes much better headlines than a solid defence. But now that United have ended their 404 minutes without a goal, United can proudly brandish a record of having not conceded in their last four matches. Actually, it is seven and three quarter hours. Fair play.
