Manchester United have been dominant with a low Bastian Schweinsteiger shot down the middle the closest they have come thus far. 

Cristiano Ronaldo was pretty anonymous against Barcelona at the weekend, but he almost makes an immediate impression against Shakhtar Donetsk. Luka Modric dinks a smart ball to Ronaldo, who shoots just wide. Solid start by the visitors.

Richard of Notts: Penastinate: to waste time in extra-time hoping to win the penalty shoot-out. "Both teams are penastinating now."

Old Trafford remarkably quiet just 15 minutes from kick-off. Everyone's staying in the warm until the last minute. Quite right too. 

Will United have their fans up and cheering soon? LvG has had plenty of stick for selecting a boring team in the past but his line-up today looks very adventurous.

Manchester City lead Juventus by a point at the top of Group D and will confirm their place as group winners - and with it a seeding in the draw for the last 16 - with victory in Turin tonight.

If they do win the group they will avoid another group winner in the knockout stage.

"Everyone criticised this club about their performances in Europe," said Manuel Pellegrini. "So it's important for us to have achievements and one of those is to qualify for the last 16.

"Finishing top doesn't mean we'll get an easy draw as it depends on a lot of things."
