Andrew:  I'm a massive Everton fan but I take no pleasure from this. Brendan shares the values of this great city. I hope they have the courage to promote from within like they used to. Football doesn't come to Liverpool, it comes from Liverpool.

MCPHONEY: Joking aside, do feel sorry for Brendan Rodgers. Bad luck, injuries, forced signings & selling. He did the best he could.

Tippers: Rodgers midgame tactical changes were poor, subs caused confusion and players ended up out of position and exposed.

Jack Hands: Vilification of yet another proven British manager after Moyes. Build them up - knock them down. So harsh on our own talent.

  4. 'Transfer committee system unworkable'published at 20:49

The Daily Mirror's Brian Reade has penned a few words on Brendan Rodgers, writing: "Most Liverpool fans will recognise that Rodgers was a decent man, who embraced the club’s traditions, who did his best, and who oversaw the most exhilarating season since the 1980s, when the Luis Suarez-inspired team almost ended the title famine.

"But results are results. So are empty trophy rooms.

"The question now is whether the owners will admit they were equally to blame for Rodgers’ failure by imposing a clearly unworkable transfer committee system on him?"

Trevor Kaneswaran: Klopp took his sabbatical in the summer, which bought Rodgers time to prove himself. He didn't.No identity. No defence. No hope.

Johnathan Both: People say Liverpool lost players. Southampton lost players too.

Luke:The top clubs in the summer did not bat an eyelid at Klopp. Maybe Liverpool is his leve

    Rodgers sacking

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Ian Wright: “If Liverpool can get Ancelotti they should take him with open arms, he has the experience, he has never done badly wherever he has gone, he is a  classy bloke, I am sure Klopp’s name will be thrown in, a manager like that out of work is maybe why they pressed the button, it is time to tempt a manager like that.

“When I think of Klopp, I think of that bad season that Dortmund had after the Champions League final, I thought the motivation wasn’t there, Liverpool don’t need that. They need a manager who  has  track record to be able to stabilise the club, get Liverpool back on the front foot where they should be.”

  9. 'I wouldn't go for Klopp'published at 20:25

    Rodgers sacking

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England striker Ian Wright on the next manager: “I feel Liverpool have already been in contact someone. their statement said they were going to act decisively and timely, which says to me they have been in touch with someone who has said yes they will come but it has to be now.

“I would worry with Jurgen Klopp, he brings exciting football, passion and respect from the players. That is fine if he can come in and Liverpool stop conceding goals and he can see green shoots but I think Liverpool should go with someone with real experience, European experience, like Carlo Ancelotti."

Stuart: Would be interesting to find how many signings Liverpool have made were Rodgers choice. Don't see the infamous "transfer committee" getting sacked.

Damiano Polcaro: Closest manager to winning us the title in over 20 years. Second best PL record for a Liverpool manager. Only given three seasons. After A. Ferguson first finished 2nd, Man United then finished 11th, 13th and 6th. Short sighted.

Dodders: I feel for Rodgers. Forced to sell Suarez and Sterling. Sturridge injured constantly and a cruel Gerrard slip away from winning the title. My only gripe is that some of our signings have been poor but the sad reality is that we can't attract the top top players anymore. Can't see anyone else doing any better.

  11. Timing a surprise - Aldridgepublished at 20:17

    Brendan RodgersImage source, Getty Images

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge was surprised by the timing of Brendan Rodgers' departure.

He told Sky Sports: "Well I'm utterly shocked. I've seen the press conference and I'm really shocked the way it has all happened so quick.

"The timing I have to say - I thought Brendan was going to be given a bit more time to turn it around - but you move on, that's what football is all about.

"It's a results business and Liverpool has got a massive, big stand to fill with nearly 10,000 more seats and they have got to get the feel-good factor within the club which we haven't had for a while now and maybe that might have tipped the balance with the owners."

Tom Wylie: The decision to sack Rodgers was made in the summer, just Klopp wasn't ready. He'll bring a buzz back to Anfield

James O'Hara: Right decision, wrong time. Should have gone in the summer, not given another £100 million to waste. All success down to Suarez

Bishop Yinkus: Football fans feeling sorry for Brendan Rodgers even BR knows that the axe has been dangling ages ago waiting to drop down

  14. Apathy of supporters key - Lawrensonpublished at 20:03

    Rodgers sacked

    Mark LawrensonImage source, Getty Images

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has given his thoughts to BBC Sport on the sacking of Brendan Rodgers:

"The biggest thing has been the apathy of the supporters - in the last few games, especially at home, the supporters have sat there in silence and, in the defeat by West Ham, they all went home very early.

"A lot of people boo but, in many ways, upping sticks and leaving was the biggest thumbs down to Brendan Rodgers that the fans could give.

There will be more analysis from Lawro on the BBC Sport website later on.

Danny: Surely this decision to sack Rodgers came too soon. Liverpool are only 3pts off 4th spot and 4pts off 2nd place after already facing Arsenal, ManU, Everton away! Haven't been playing well but I would've liked to see him give a few more games and see. Danny, London

Ed wickson: Shocked to see Rodgers sacked; but the buzz around anfield had crumbled after the disappointment of losing the title so late on in 13/14. Since then it's gone downhill.

Chris D: Right decision. Lack of tactical response to strong Everton 2nd half. Need someone with Euro know-how and ability to attract talent.

Alex Mathieson:  sad to see Rodgers go but I think we now need a manager who can attract top players and stop selling instead. Get Ancellotti!

Paul Thompson: Any team losing Suarez, Sturridge (to injury), Sterling and Gerrard in quick succession would struggle. Seems harsh to me. #bbcfootball, external
