Arsenal's Theo Walcott, who provided two assists: "After the Olympiakos disappointment we started this game completely differently. We caught them on the break, we maybe eased off in the second half but the clean sheet was crucial for the whole team today.

"This game will send out a message to the Premier League that we are ready to have a go this season."

The half-time introduction of Marouane Fellaini helped Manchester United see more of the ball, but rarely where it mattered. Fellaini made just two forward passes inside the Arsenal half.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "It was a brilliant afternoon for Arsenal, they got exactly what they needed after the disappointment from midweek. The way they came out of the blocks in the first few minutes,they gave United not once chance, they were the far superior side and got what they deserved.

"That game had nothing to be positive about if your a United fan, they didn't turn up, they were pedestrian."

The final whistle goes on a miserable afternoon for Manchester United, but a brilliant one for Arsenal. 

Gunners fans, lap it up. Your side are second in the table now, two points behind Manchester City.

Manchester United have really been lucky to get away with just the three goals against them as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain plants an effort on the bar.

Into the closing stages of a game that, in truth, was finished as a contest back on the 20-minute mark.

Two minutes of added time for Manchester United to endure.

Ironic whistles fill the air at the Emirates as Wayne Rooney shoots high, high over the bar. It has not been the forward's, or Manchester United's, day at all.

Olivier Giroud should really get in on the goalscoring act as he has a chance put on a plate for him by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The French striker has all the goal to aim for from the middle of the area, but scuffs a tame effort straight at David De Gea.

Well, Manchester United have won this half in terms of the possession stats. No good with no goals, though.

They win another corner as Antonio Valencia's shot is deflected behind. It is played short, but Arsenal push them back to the halfway line and United build again.

There will be no hat-trick for Alexis Sanchez today as he goes off to a standing ovation with what looks like a possible groin injury. Kieran Gibbs comes on for a 10-minute run around.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal also makes a change, putting all his hopes of a miracle comeback in a James Wilson-shaped basket. The striker comes on for his first appearance of the season, replacing Juan Mata.

It is almost a year since Wayne Rooney last scored an away goal in the Premier League for Manchester United. The opponent that day? Arsenal. It looks highly unlikely that he will end his away day drought today, having managed just a single foray into the Arsenal box.

Arsene Wenger makes his first changes of the game as Theo Walcott is replaced by Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlian is on for Mesut Ozil. 

Huge cheers for Walcott and Ozil, who have both put in a shift and a half today.

Arsenal have definitely taken their foot off the pedal, but when they do attack they just look so much more dangerous going forward. 

They have a great chance to score a fourth as Nacho Monreal gets the ball on the left, finds Mesut Ozil in the middle of the area, but his low shot is straight at David De Gea.
