  1. Decision to sack Rodgers made before derbypublished at 19:35

BBC Sport's Ben Smith has got a few more details on Brendan Rodgers' departure:

"FSG's decision to sack Rodgers was made before today's Merseyside derby but the owners did not want to disrupt preparations for the match by making an announcement before the game. Even a victory at Goodison Park would not have prevented Rodgers losing his job.

"Rodgers was not told at Goodison Park. He was visited at home by Ian Ayre and I am told he took the news with dignity and good grace. Many of the players are now off on international duty and so there was was no chance to say goodbye to them. FSG wanted Rodgers to learn of the news from them and no one else and hence the decision to tell him within an hour of the result."

Bob:  Liverpool fans will want Klopp. But how long before they're calling for him to be sacked? A season? Two? Liverpool fans need to realise that they support a second tier team that once had a few glory years, a long time ago. Sixth or seventh for them is a good season.

Mark Abbott: I can't help but feel that not persuading Gerrad to stay was a factor in this decision.

Lewis Walters: Honestly wish Rodgers the best for the future. Good manager, just didn't quite cut it at Liverpool. Ancelotti or Klopp please.

Jay: Klopp did worse than Rodgers after losing his star players. Can't see why he'd be favourite. Just a new shiny thing?

Swansea manager Garry Monk: "I am surprised at the decision and I cannot believe it.

"It is a very harsh decision and he did not deserve that at all. He is a top manager; you do not know what happens behind closed doors but I am really shocked. I will try and speak to him because you never like to see things like that.

"He did a great job here at Swansea, he was fantastic for us and I am not sure who would do a better job at Liverpool. He will bounce back, he was so supportive to me given me advice when I got the job here, he is a top man and a top manager. I don't understand it."

AkoredeKameelAdebayo: Two managers gone today. One resigned and other sacked. If you don't meet expectations in football then you have to go.

Paul Mulligan: Tough on Rodgers - best players sold and big money replacements have failed to deliver. Ancelotti or Klopp obvious successors. #bbcfootball, external

Andrew Priestley: 18 months ago Brendan Rodgers was 'the next Bill Shankly' at Anfield. Now he's out on his ear. Losing Suarez was the catalyst. #bbcfootball, external

Ross Quinn: Finally. Wonder if FSG finally saw that the 2nd was an aberration due to Suarez. Klopp would be great have feeling it won't be.

Michael Griffin:  really want Klopp but after what de Boer was saying in the week think he may be the new #LFC, external manager

"Names like  Ancelotti, Klopp, will be right at the top of the list. The Liverpool statement said they wanted to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.

"They clearly feel they are confident this new manager will bring them this winning team, that they were not confident Rodgers could deliver.

"Klopp is a name on Merseyside that has strong support, the style of play we saw at Dortmund team, that was exciting winning football is football the Liverpool supporters want to see.

"I feel for Brendan Rodgers, he will always have a niggle that he did not have the whole season this year with a fit Daniel Sturridge, he will feel he had unfinished business."

  18. Rodgers' comments before he was sackedpublished at 18:56

These are the comments from Brendan Rodgers after the 1-1 draw with Everton, so a few hours before he was sacked:

"There are two points: the first is I don't feel any pressure, I can honestly say that," he said.

"There is pressure to sell newspapers and make stories and I understand and respect that. My job is to worry about the team, that is the only pressure I will feel.

"People will want to put pressure on for different reasons. I don't feel it, I don't want it but anything externally, there is no drama. "I have never felt anything other than secure. That is not being complacent. I was brought here to do a job, I signed a new deal (in May 2014) and the owners know it takes time."

Former England striker Ian Wright: "I am shocked,he was meant to be the new kid on the block. He was one of the British coaches but it has not worked out for him.

"Despite his 'Luis Suarez' season where they finished second, his signings and tactics haven't worked. It went steadily down hill.

"He had run out of time, it is unfortunate for him but I don't think Liverpool owed him that time, they gave him a lot of money to spend.

"The club are nowhere near where they want to be. A club of Liverpool's size do not need to answer to anyone. They have acted swiftly and decisively, they had to, there are people out there who can come in."
