    More from Jose Mourinho.

On United's penalties being taken by Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, he said:

"The first penalty taker was Paul. We made that decision and then maybe he didn’t want to repeat (take another soon after).

"I always give the one who has the responsibility to take it but with freedom for others on the pitch to take one."

On Pogba's performance: “Two days ago he was the worst player in the Premier League and 48 hours later he is phenomenal.

"He needs time. I was in Italy, I know Italian football. To be in Italy for four or five years and come back I was not expecting it to be a click of the fingers for intensity. He needs time."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: "It is three points and that is what we needed. We knew after the first defeat it was important to get nine points at home and a few more away so it was a very important victory for us.

"It was good. They came with a good defensive plan and stopped us for the first period but then after the first two goals, both clear penalties it opened the door for quality.

"With the fourth goal we stopped and they tried to have a reaction which they did. I am never happy to concede a goal. We lacked a bit of concentration but that is the nature of the players and lots of changes, it is acceptable."

    Dundalk 1-2 Zenit St Petersburg

Dundalk conceded two goals in six minutes to slip to defeat against Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League group game in Dublin.

Robbie Benson's 52nd-minute goal suggested that another famous Dundalk European win was on the cards.

But a poor clearance by Dundalk keeper Gabriel Sava gifted an equaliser to Robert Mak on 71 and Brazilian star Giuliano soon hit the winner

Sava saved an injury-time Mauricio penalty but Zenit had done enough.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba: “We wanted the win because it was really important and now we are top of the group and are looking forward to the next game.

“I told Wayne (Rooney) I wanted to take the penalty and he let me. I am very happy to score that penalty and from a player like him to let me it is big respect so I am very glad.

“I feel comfortable with all of the team. It is just at the start of the season and there is still a long way to go and we want to go up and do our best and be top of the league.”

Four goals, a win and a goal for an old favourite.

As European evenings go at Old Trafford, this was a good one for Manchester United and their fans.

But Jose Mourinho knows his tricky week is only two-thirds through.

He has a draw from a trip to Liverpool. Now he must go to Stamford Bridge, the ground he called home for so long, and a meeting with Chelsea that is bound to be emotional, but, given United are slightly off the pace in the Premier League, one he must get something from.
