Southampton manager Claude Puel: "We play every three days, it's very difficult for my players. We have many chances to play football and we play every time with fresh men.

"I don't like this [chat that it's a good time to play Inter], Inter Milan have great players. They want to make a good reaction tonight, it is an important game for both sides. It is not our problem."

Robin van Persie scored 35 goals in his first season for Manchester United, delivering the title in Sir Alex Ferguson's final year in charge.

He was a superb signing, but was gradually phased out before leaving for Fenerbahce last summer.

Now 33, can RvP come back to hurt United tonight?

BBC Sport explores how the relationship between Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi and the club's fans has fallen apart, with Inter's ultras saying the club's captain is "dead" to them.

The fall-out comes after Icardi suggested in his autobiography that he could have them "killed on the spot".

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi may have upset some of the club's fans but manager Frank de Boer picks him to start. Former Cardiff midfielder Gary Medel is also in the Serie A side's line-up, while Ever Banega and Ivan Perisic are on the bench.

Inter Milan XI:  Handanovic, Icardi, Medel, Santon, Eder, Murillo, Miranda, Gnoukouri, Nagatomo, Brozovic, Candreva.

Southampton make six changes from the win over Burnley on Sunday. Midfielder/full-back Sam McQueen, who came on as a substitute in that game, makes his first start for the club. Defender Maya Yoshida, midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Pierre Hojbjerg as well as forwards Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez also come into the side. The benched Jose Fonte, Jordy Clasie, Steven Davis, Charlie Austin, injured Matt Targett and rested Nathan Redmond are the ones to make way.

Club record signing Sofiane Boufal has yet to play for Southampton but is also a substitute.

Southampton XI: Forster, Yoshida, Long, Rodriguez, Tadic, Romeu, Martina, Ward-Prowse, Van Dijk, Hojbjerg, McQueen.

  10. Champions League in the Big Apple?published at 17:23 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

    It could happen

Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin says he will revive an open bidding process for the Champions League final and is open to the game being staged in New York.

Ceferin highlighted how travel times across Europe can be as long as flights to the United States.

He said: "to go from Portugal to Azerbaijan for example is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. For the fans it's no problem but we should see. It's a European competition so let's think about it."

John Guidetti - formerly of Manchester City and Celtic - scored a hat-trick in Feyenoord's 4-2 win over Ajax in January 2012 that reportedly so impressed the Amsterdam club that they tried to sign him. He apparently turned them down because of his loyalty to Feyenoord. The 24-year-old has another chance to inflict pain on Ajax as they travel to his current employers Celta Vigo.

Elsewhere Israeli side Hapoel Be'er Sheva - who beat Inter Milan in the San Siro in September - take on Sparta Prague in the other game in Southampton's Group K.

Mario Balotelli - who has scored six goals in six games since signing for Nice in the summer - is absent from the French league leaders' trip to Red Bull Salzburg after picking up a groin strain.

  15. The captain's a clown!published at 17:06 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

Inter Milan v Southampton (18:00 BST)

It's been a remarkable few weeks at the San Siro.

Inter fans have called for leading scorer Mauro Icardi to be stripped of the captaincy following a heated row with the Argentina forward.

Inter's hardcore 'ultras' called Icardi a "clown" before Sunday's 2-1 home loss to Cagliari - and cheered when he missed a penalty during the match.

Icardi, 23, had criticised the fans in a recently published autobiography.

Club president and ex-captain Javier Zanetti said: "We cannot accept this kind of behaviour from an employee."

Icardi, who claimed in his book he had been "hailed as a hero" in the dressing room for challenging a section of supporters after a defeat at Sassuolo in February 2015, had attempted to diffuse the situation with a social media post before the game against Cagliari.

But fans jeered him and displayed a banner criticising the player, who had scored six goals this season but missed from the spot with the score at 0-0 before Cagliari went on to secure their first away win since securing promotion back to Serie A last season.
