    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Villa brought Jack Grealish on to give some attacking impetus. He won a corner a moment ago on the right and then swept in a cross that was gathered by Carl Ikeme.

Still, Wolves look largely comfortable. Perhaps they do need a second to end Villa's hopes though...

Goals from Paul Huntington and Callum Robinson gave Preston a victory over Brighton which knocked the Seagulls off the top of the table.

Preston boss Simon Grayson said: "It was a complete victory, a very well-deserved win against a really strong team.

"It's looking like Brighton will end up in the top two this season - or even win the league - so for us to beat them so convincingly says a lot about this team.

"We looked strong throughout, but this result has been coming for quite a while now."

    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

This game has been excellent for many reasons - mainly because it's a proper West Midlands rivalry.

Secondly, because both teams have played a bit of football. Thirdly, because they're wearing traditional colours. No stupid away kits.

Claret and blue v gold and black.

Meanwhile, Wolves skipper Danny Batth is down in the opposition box.

Matt Doherty and Alan Hutton go shoulder-to-shoulder in the box and the latter tumbles to the deck looking for a Villa penalty but gets nothing.

Nouha Dicko is then clipped and Wolves get a free-kick.

The not-so-easy-to-type Bright Enobakhare is warming up for Wolves.

    FT: Rotherham 2-1 Norwich

    Jerry YatesImage source, Rex Features

Jerry Yates made his first league start for Rotherham today, scoring against Norwich on the way to the Millers' victory, a day after his grandfather passed away.

Rotherham boss Paul Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield: "He played like I would like to play if I still could. He gives everything he's got.

"The fashion from footballers these days is that you don't need to run around, you just play it and do nutmegs and tricks. That isn't real football. He was outstanding and he's not playing against idiots.

"Respect to him, he lost his grandfather yesterday. I couldn't play Danny Ward because of a back injury, Dexter Blackstock wasn't 100% fit so he literally had to take the mantel on his own.

"I was really proud of him, he's a lovely kid and obviously had a hard day yesterday. We said to him when he came off 'you got your goal for your grandad'."

A big chance for the home side, as Nouha Dicko smashes his shot into the legs of Sam Johnstone after another high-octane break.

Wolves have the game by the scruff of the neck right now, largely dictating the pace of the game and in particular second-ball.

Villa really haven't tasked Carl Ikeme this second half.

The Championship's bottom side Rotherham United defeated Norwich 2-1 in South Yorkshire, after Canaries striker Nelson Oliveira's red card when his side were losing 1-0.

"It cost us the game from that point onwards," Norwich boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio Norfolk. "For the first 20 minutes when we had 11 on the pitch I thought we were slow, poor in possession and didn't play with any intensity and conceded on the back of that.

"Once we went down to 10 men we seemed to start playing. I thought we did extremely well to get the equaliser and then concede a sloppy goal.

"Nelson has let himself and his team-mates down, but I don't think Kirk Broadfoot is an innocent party. He had him in a headlock but Nelson's reaction is unacceptable."

Almost an embarrassment off the restart for Aston Villa, as James Chester channels his inner Franz Beckenbauer but loses the ball, and Wolves get an early shot on goal which rises over the bar.

Mile Jedinak has a dig at the other end, blocked by Wolves with vocal yet overly-hopeful appeals for a penalty. No go.

Dave Edwards trots off for stitches required after a head wound.

    HT: Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

When Taylor returned to Villa Park in February 2002, it was again at a time of crisis in the wake of the scars left by John Gregory’s inevitable departure following a boardroom row with chairman Doug Ellis.

The big spending of Gregory’s reign was over and Taylor was brought in to steady the ship on a limited budget.

But, following the loss of first Ugo Ehiogu, then also his defensive partner Gareth Southgate the previous summer, Villa were by now on a downward spiral – and Taylor this time could not halt it.

His team fell out of Europe contention as they won only three times in their last 15 games, then, largely thanks to a terrible away record, could only finish 16th the following season – just three points away from the drop. And this time walked away, to be replaced by David O’Leary.

  16. Graham Taylor: One season with Wolvespublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2017

    HT: Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Taylor’s time with Wolves, his first job after being sacked by England, was not a success at first glance. But he did help set in place the now flourishing Wolves Academy system. And his effect on the pitch could so easily have turned the other way.

After succeeding where Graham Turner had failed for four years before him by at least leading Wolves to the play-offs, Taylor’s team did not cash in as they should have done after dominating the semi-final first leg against Bolton.

Instead, they went to Burnden Park with only a one-goal lead, it went to extra-time and, on a highly emotional night, a refereeing decision proved crucial as John McGinlay received only a yellow card for punching David Kelly before going on to hit the winner.

When Wolves started the following season poorly, the fans turned on Taylor and the club panicked themselves into sacking him

Graham Taylor's love affair with Villa began when he took over after relegation from the top flight in 1987, and brought them back at the first attempt.

Signing players such as David Platt, Gordon Cowans, Nigel Callaghan and Derek Mountfield, Taylor did enough to keep the club in the old First Division, and then mount a serious challenge for the title.

Young homegrown players such as Tony Daley and Ian Olney thrived as Villa climbed, and it was enough for the Football Association to take notice.

Taylor left for England in 1990, having guided the Villans to second place and a European spot... but he'd be back.

While we all feel we have a part of Graham Taylor following his time in charge of England, and the 'Impossible Job' documentary, it's probably fans of Watford, Aston Villa and Wolves who feel most the loss of a gentleman this past week.

At Watford of course, there was a rise from Fourth to First, gracing Europe and establishing the careers of players such as John Barnes, Luther Blissett and David Bardsley.

But what about Wolves and Villa? Let's have a look at why he means so much to the two sets of fans this evening...

A hugely entertaining and engaging West Midlands derby between Wolves and Aston Villa, befitting the pre-match tributes to the late Graham Taylor who managed both teams.

One goal to show for the excitement, coming from Joe Mason after quarter of an hour to give the home side the lead.

Ross McCormack had Villa's best chance, powering a header over the top from a Jordan Amavi cross.

Still another big 45 minutes to go, and both sides still in the contest.
