    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Closing in on the break here. This has been an excellent derby. There was a terrific 'Hail Mary' that Albert Adomah tried to lift beyond Carl Ikeme in the Wolves goal but defender Conor Coady mopped up well.

There's a real buzz about Wolves on the break, but still just the one Joe Mason goal separates the two teams.

    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Wolves again fling a cross into the Aston Villa box that is just about kept out and cleared, but Wolves come again and Joe Mason is so close to getting a shot away.

The ball spoons up and Mason tries to round the keeper but James Chester smuggles the ball behind. Villa clear the corner.

    It's 100mph at the moment.

Wolves, who see Helder Costa flash a shot into the hands of Sam Johnstone, continue to break with pace.

Villa's Jordan Amavi has been growing into the game down that left side, putting another tempting cross to Gabriel Agbonlahor, which was eventually covered.

Brighton slipped off the top of the Championship with a defeat at Preston North End thanks to goals from Paul Huntington and Callum Robinson, while Brighton striker Tomer Hemed missed a penalty, ending the Seagulls' 18-match unbeaten run.

Boss Chris Hughton told BBC Sussex: "If you're looking for opportunities to test their goalkeeper, that we haven't done.

"You have to give Preston credit, not only for their overall performance but also defensively I thought they were very good.

"Some games like this are going to happen, this is a real tough division, but what we have done is shown enough in enough games away from home to get results. But we didn't show that today."

    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been lifted a bit by that previous opportunity, having shown all the urgency of a hungover student in the first 20 minutes.

They've had two decent deliveries into the box this past five minutes. That said, Wolves look a threat every time they get the ball in opposition territory.

    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Flash of a chance for Villa. They finally whipped in a ball for Ross McCormack to attack, Jordan Amavi romping forward down the left, but the Scotland forward headed over.

Steve Bruce's reaction says it all. Missed opportunity.

    Wolves 1-0 Aston Villa

Wolves look comfortable, even from set-pieces like the most recent free-kick pumped into the box.

With Danny Baath and Richard Stearman, they've got two centre-backs who'll happily mix it.

Villa have a playmaker in Jack Grealish and the calming influence of Ashley Westwood on the bench, but they need to get Ross McCormack and Gabby Agbonlahor on the ball, you sense, if they're to hurt Wolves.

  8. 'Today Newcastle showed character'published at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2017

    FT: Brentford 1-2 Newcastle

    MurphyImage source, Rex Features

Newcastle are back at the top of the Championship after Dwight Gayle and Daryl Murphy's goals gave them a 2-1 victory at Brentford, but it came at a cost as Gayle went off in the first half with injury.

Rafael Benitez told BBC Newcastle: "Today they showed the character that we are looking for in every game and if you want to stay at the top you have to show this.

"I said before the players who weren't playing were working hard and training well and would have their moment. Today was really good for (Muprhy) and hopefully he can score more goals."

On Dwight Gayle's muscle injury: "It's too early to know but we'll check it tomorrow and the doctor will let me know."

That was a chance for Aston Villa. They had a free-kick out on the right-hand side in a promising position but the delivery from Ross McCormack was easily dealt with.

Wolves fans are winning the the battle of the vocal chords too from the stands, out-singing their visitors with that one-goal lead.

    Joe Mason

Wolves go in front and it's Joe Mason, who you could say bounces his shot over the hand of Sam Johnstone. He drove it into the ground and up over the keeper.

Credit must go to Nouha Dicko, who worked an opening down his right, the Villa left and stretched to pull the ball back from the byline for Mason to finish.

The home side have set the pace so far and have their reward for such adventure.

Tommy Elphick got a great foot in to deny a swarming Matt Doherty down the left side of the penalty area. Superb from the Villa centre-half.

Albert Adomah was then denied at the other end by the linesman's flag as he tried to slip away from the home defence.

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

Villa are keen to get the ball forward swiftly, with Gabriel Agbonlahor their main outlet at the moment.

Their first chance on goal came from Alan Hutton, barely worthy of the word though as it sailed wide.

    Entertaining enough opening though.

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

Wolves are employing a shoot-on-sight policy at the moment, Helder Costa the latest to crash a shot against a centre-half's shins.

Joe Mason follows up with a couple of digs, but still can't blast a way through.

Good coverage from Aston Villa though, they've shut down the space well.

    Wolves 0-0 Aston Villa

Just five places and six points separate these two teams before kick-off, with neither side currently involved in the promotion mix despite early optimism.

The fact this is the first second-tier derby at Molineux between the two clubs just shows how far they've come down in stature.

Nouha Dicko gets Wolves moving forward with momentum but his shot from the edge of the box is blocked.

    WagnerImage source, Rex Features

Huddersfield were defeated 2-0 by Yorkshire rivals and fellow play-off hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday, having been reduced to 10 men after Jack Payne's red card. But Terriers boss David Wagner was not happy with the officials afterwards.

"We played well in a difficult place; I'm proud of the performance," said Wagner. "Three decisions decided the game.

"In my opinion, Nahki Wells was fouled for the first goal, Jack Payne's tackle wasn't a red and the second goal was tight, but offside.

"Being honest, we also did not take our chances. We were not clinical enough."
