  1. Who's decent for Germany?published at 16:42 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

Here's a couple of Germans to keep your eye on this afternoon.

    Maximilian Philipp.

The 23-year-old forward has signed for Borussia Dortmund from Freiburg for about £17.7m. Matthias Ginter made the same move in 2014. He's one of the best they've produced in years, the club says.

    Maximilian Arnold.

Another 23-year-old Max. He is the youngest player to appear for Wolfsburg, and has already featured in 160 games for the Bundesliga club, including 10 in the Champions Leage. A crafty centre-midfielder, he's rated very highly.

    Serge Gnabry.

Surely the most recognisable name for the English observer. The 21-year-old winger's career has taken off since he was binned by Arsenal before the beginning of last season. An impressive campaign for Wolfsburg got Bayern Munich interested. He's joined the German giants on a three-year deal.

Niklas Stark, who has been named in Germany's starting line-up, appears to have pulled a muscle in his back during the warm-up and has disappeared down the tunnel. We're going to have to see whether he re-appears.

  3. Who's in the team?published at 16:37 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

Many of the England side you will know well already if you follow the Premier League.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is the captain, winger Nathan Redmond, only fit for the bench today, joined him there from Norwich last year, and keeper Jordan Pickford has just signed for Everton - £25m big ones, rising to £30m.

Rob Holding's developed a popular following among Arsenal fans this season, fellow Gunner Calum Chambers was on loan at Middlesbrough last year, while fellow centre-back Alfie Mawson is a stalwart of the Swansea back four.

Then there's Leicester striker Demarai Gray, Everton's Mason Holgate...

On paper, it's looking very good.

  4. 'Redmond does't have the full 90 mins in him'published at 16:32 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd speaking on Sky Sports: "Nathan Redmond is fit and ready to go but I don't think he's got the full 90 or 120 minutes in him. He's the sort of player that can change a game.

"I've brought in Will Hughes because he is left sided and gives us a bit of a different threat with his passing and I wanted to push Lewis Baker a little further up the pitch.

"I'm hoping our extra prep time is an advantage. We reccied the hotel in Krakow two years ago - the prep is part of it.

"We faced Germany in March and we learned they're a good team and when their tails are up they can give anyone a good hiding."

  6. How did they get here?published at 16:28 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

Germany's path to the semi-finals was slightly more complicated.

They finished second in Group C and only made it through as the best second-placed team.

Stefan Kuntz's side (remember him from Euro 96?) beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in their first game.

Then came a 3-0 win over Denmark.

But they lost their final group game 1-0 to Italy, who play Spain in the other semi-final later today (20:00 BST).

England made it through to the semis by topping group A.

    On the way here they:

Drew 0-0 with Sweden in their opening game.

Beat Slovakia 2-1 in their next one.

And they capped it all off with a rather impressive 3-0 win against the hosts, Poland, on Thursday.

England are boosted by Nathaniel Chalobah passing his fitness test.

I understand Nathan Redmond is available for selection if required off the bench.

Germany had named an unchanged side throughout the group stages but make two changes and maybe move to a system of 4-5-1

It's true. Go for it., external Definitely worth the effort. I believe it means 'mouth bags?' Although being superstitious, when it comes to football anyway, will eating the food of the opposition nation be good or bad luck?

England played Germany in the final of the 2009 edition of this event.

When the future Borussia Dortmund captain Marcel Schmelzer came on in the 89th minute, Germany were already 4-0 up. Mesut Ozil was the man replaced.

Sami Khedira was the captain, Manuel Neuer the keeper, Jerome Boateng at centre-back. They've all done alright since too.

England's well beaten-side were: Scott Loach, Martin Cranie, Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha, Kieran Gibbs, Fabrice Muamba, Lee Cattermole, Mark Noble, James Milner, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott.

Milner would go on to play 61 times for England, Walcott's on 47. How many would Muamba have made, had his career not been cut short?

It won't have escaped your attention. There's a bit of history between these two. Bragging rights are at stake. My German pal only recently stumped up the winnings for a bet we had around England's 3-2 friendly win in March last year. He paid up in maultaschen,, external which if you eat animals, I highly recommend.

Even at youth level, this is still a huge one. And for England, there's a recent wrong to right...

    England v Germany (17:00 BST)

Wouldn't it be nice if England made the final?

Victory over Germany in Tychy (it's in Poland) would see Aidy Boothroyd's under-21s become the fourth English youth side to reach a final this summer.

England's under-20s are world champions, the under-17s lost May's Euro 2017 final to Spain, and then there's the team that won the Toulon Tournament.

Sounds pretty good right? Maybe things aren't so bad after all...
