  1. Postpublished at 69 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Yohan Cabaye takes a corner for the home side and it goes deep to the back stick to find only a tame and wayward header. Roy Hodgson has a big coat on now and his hair is sodden.

He envisaged a sunny, joyful, winning day. He is getting the opposite right now.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 69 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

That booking is James McArthur's last contribution. He is hooked for Luka Milivojevic.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 67 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

You can see the bulk of possession is with Southampton but Palace are having a little more of the territory stakes.

Into the book goes James McArthur. He was late on Ryan Bertrand.

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Dusan Tadic again threatens the right wing after a neat Shane Long lay-off. Jeffrey Schlupp makes a tackle and then wins a free-kick as Long is adjudged to have roughed him up a bit in the aftermath. The striker is not a bit happy and shouts something at the referee which has no place in a live text.

  5. Postpublished at 63 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Jeffrey Schlupp takes off down the left and screams for a return pass. He gets it and his cross is blocked, throw in. The rain pummels the players and a low cross skips off the surface but gets cleared.

Counter-attack. Dusan Tadic on the ball with Palace chasing back, he tries to roll a ball in behind but a key Scott Dan intervention leads to a corner.

  6. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Palace try to play through Southampton's lines but it's being contained well. All of it is in front of the away side and Mario Lamina wins the ball back by hounding Andros Townsend.

"Of Southampton we love you," chant the travelling contingent.

Palace have come out with some inspired words I feel from Roy Hodgson. They need to be careful not to get caught on the counter-attack though.

Should the worst come from the worst, they still have a lot of games to play. They have every chance of getting out of it.

They have 31 games to prove it but it is a tough start for them.

  8. Postpublished at 56 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Nathan Redmond lashes one from 18 yards which is blocked in the area. The rain is battering down now. That should suit Southampton more as they've used the surface to pass. The home side have been fairly direct throughout. Corner for the away side... booted clear.

What looks like Chinese writing to me is lapping the pitch at Selhurst Park on the electronic advertising hoardings.

They should overtype it and in clear English write: "lads, you are closing in on becoming the first Premier League side in history to lose their opening five games without scoring."

  10. Postpublished at 52 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

That last Palace attack arrived when Oriel Romeu gave the ball away in his own half. He was almost made to pay. Dusan Tadic and Cedric Soares look to combine high up the pitch but Jeffrey Schlupp does well to kill the attack.

Incredible work in the 18-yard box by Southampton to get the ball away. That was really energetic from Palace.

That was tremendous attacking play. That was the first time they had some real intensity. It was a wonderful save too.

That was Loftus-Cheek at his best again.

Crystal Palace have nothing to fear if they can continue at this pace.

  12. CLOSE!published at 49 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Oh my word. How are Crystal Palace not level?

A low Ruben Loftus-Cheek cross gets a near-post flick but somehow evades everyone to skirt across the face of goal. They build again and another low ball from the left flank has Jason Puncheon primed from the six-yard line but a combination of block and mighty fine Fraser Forster save keeps the score at 1-0. A fantastic save.

It's interesting that there are no tactical changes at half-time. Roy Hodgson has obviously said he'll give them 15 minutes or so to see what they can do.

He will then look at the options on his bench.

  14. Postpublished at 47 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

The pattern continues, Southampton are allowed to keep possession for a spell until Dusan Tadic tries a silly first-time ball across field. Palace have it back and make slow progress up the right flank to win a throw.

Liam Gillan: I'm Wondering when we're going to invest in a new Keeper? #CPFC

Alex Smith: Romeu and Lemina have so much time on the ball, both are running the game. Palace centre midfielders have been anonymous.

Cal: This is about as big a game as you can get for Palace, they can't afford to be on 0 points ahead of their next three fixtures...

John: Hodgson's job on the line if they don't get a goal. Sacked at half time.

  19. Big test for Hodgsonpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2017

Southampton are very neat. They are not over-excitable. It's been particularly impressive down the right hand side.

They will feel slightly superior after the first 45 minutes.

It's a big test for Roy Hodgson. He might have to change individuals or make a tactical change. He might just have to say 'we need to play with more intensity.'

They need to get Loftus-Cheek on the ball because he has been creating chances.
