Not going to plan for the new man just yet then.
Still, in 41 years of management, he will have been 1-0 down at half-time before.
Go earn your money Roy, get into their heads.
Southampton have been impressive. A clear desire to get the ball down and pass. They've been afforded too much time to do it and if that continues, they look to have every chance of taking advantage.

Route one. Ball up to Christian Benteke, flick on, helped on again by Jason Puncheon and Andros Townsend volleys wide.
Flowing aerial stuff.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
A vital block by Joel Ward. Nathan Redmond burst into the area and his cut-back eventually found Dusan Tadic. A fizzed effort needed stopping somehow.
Redmond has a go himself from range but Wayne Hennessey will hold that easily.

Tom McQuillin: Roy Hodgson looks like when you're too tired in class to work out the answer but you got to look like you're thinking real hard.
Christopher Crescent: Surprised that #shanelongoffside isn't already a hashtag.
Sarah Morgan: Palace board deserve all they've got with Saints goal. Unfortunately it's players and fans who'll suffer for Musical Managers.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Crystal Palace need to find another gear. No doubt they are trying here but the intensity just isn't there yet. Jason Puncheon gives the ball away sloppily, drawing audible groans. Mario Lemina in Southampton's midfield has been good so far. He plays a pass and makes a run to be picked out later in the move but the ball to him is a touch heavy.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Southampton are using the right flank a lot, it's where the goal came from of course.
Again they work the ball there but a Dusan Tadic cross is behind everyone in the area.
With a better final ball today they could be further ahead.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Christian Benteke attempts to bring a long ball down and flick it into the path of Andros Townsend but his pass is a touch off. No outfield player has given the ball away more than Benteke so far.
He brings Joel Ward into the game and makes a run for the area. Townsend tries to find him with a reverse pass but Southampton's defence read it with ease.

Andros Townsend and Jason Puncheon have switched sides. That's probably to give the Southampton defenders a different problem.
It's a new approach and Roy Hodgson will hope that will help Crystal Palace.

Yohan Cabaye is in the book for a late tackle. That's his second yellow in three league games this season.
Southampton taking the sting out of Palace's good few minutes a little.

Great quality by Loftus-Cheek. He let the ball run which confused his marker. Real high quality stuff that.
He has done very well at England youth levels and the game comes easy to him. This will be a real test for him though.
He has real quality on the ball and there can be no question about that but the only doubt is does he work hard enough?

I do like the look of Ruben Loftus-Cheek. He's fantasy football worthy in my view. He picks the ball up 30 yards out and shapes to shoot, feints, progresses and then powers into the area. His shot then needs a critical block to force a corner.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Penalty appeal - albeit a weak one - from the home fans. A right wing cross from Joel Ward to the back stick sees a player go down after jumping for the header. A push is claimed. Play on.
A bit better though as Palace come again. Ruben Loftus-Cheek finds space and bursts through the midfield line... hit it son... he does... close too... wide. Low and hard but a shade off target.
I think Andy Townsend would use the term "better" in summing up these last few minutes for Palace.

I think Crystal Palace are retreating too deep and it's infuriating the crowd a little as they want to see them press more.
It might be a tactical thing but they are looking to Andros Townsend to get the ball forward.

"Pressure on the ball, pressure on the ball". That's the message from the Crystal Palace bench. They are sitting off in midfield though, allowing Southampton to move it with ease. The Saints swing another delivery in and it's into the arms of the keeper. Nathan Redmond gets on the ball again and tries to release Shane Long... offside.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Jason Puncheon is quiet so far, just five touches in almost 25 minutes.
Looking at Crystal Palace's setup it looks like a 4-4-1-1, with Ruben Loftus Cheek playing nearest to Christian Benteke.
That's solid I guess. Roy Hodgson of course loved 4-4-2 at Fulham. He nails the basics. It's no frills stuff. Why carve a fine piece of ham when you can open a tin of spam?

Christian Benteke has not reacted well to being robbed of the ball, he's just stood there and that won't impress Roy Hodgson.
He will want every one of his players to work their socks off.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
Southampton fans sing, it's gone a bit quiet for the home faithful, save for a persistent drum bearing.
Andros Townsend looks to fire in an in-swinger, headed clear. Yohan Cabaye is urged to shoot... high and wide.
