Speaking of prolific strikers... Alvaro Morata, ladies and gentlemen!

The Chelsea striker banged in a hat-trick yesterday as Chelsea took Stoke to the cleaners. Morata struck in the second, 77th and 82nd minute, with fellow Spaniard Pedro bagging the other goal in a 4-0 win.

Morata, a club record £60m summer signing from Real Madrid, has now scored six league goals this season.

    Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Sheffield United

What a start at Hillborough! John Fleck smashes a free-kick into the bottom corner of the net to give United the lead and silence the home fans. Keeper didn't even move.

    Playing against your former club

Later this afternoon, Brighton host Newcastle. There are a few links between the clubs, notably Albion manager Chris Hughton, who used to be Magpies boss, and goalkeeper Tim Krul, who was released by United to join the Seagulls permanently this week.

Off the back of these, I'm keen to hear your stories of times you've come up against a former side and how it went? Did you, like Denis Law, score against your first love? Did you celebrate? Or did it all go horribly, horribly wrong?

  4. 'We controlled it'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: "You have to score goals. We did well, we played a good game and it is difficult to control this team, but we have to learn and be more aggressive. We gave everything but one action changed the game.

"It is the most difficult thing in modern football to score.

"I think we controlled the game but we allowed them to play in counter-attack and that is something they are really good. They were under pressure all the time."

  5. 'I'd like a Manchester derby right now'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    MOTD2 Extra

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott: "The reaction of the Manchester United players on Saturday after winning 1-0 at Southampton shows how much they care and how much they enjoyed the result."

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray: "It is a shame for me that the first derby does not come until December - I would like to see it earlier than that."

  7. 'Difficult day'published at 12:59 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Southampton 0-1 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said: "It is not always possible for high quality, but we fought hard. We did for 25 minutes what many teams do for 90 minutes - to have five at the back and defend.

"We had two chances to kill the game, which is what we felt we could do, but credit to them, they tried to play, they sent on a second striker to play more direct but we fought really hard and I am happy.

"The majority of our players did not play in the midweek match [against Burton in the Carabao Cup]. Maybe it was the heat because we don't see the sun in Manchester often. I felt the boys were not sharp, so the option was to go for the points.

"The way we attack is something we are doing since the start of the season, to defend like that was the first time that had happened to us this season."

  8. Romelu strikes againpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

I'm not going to talk about the song, just the goal. Romelu Lukaku's strike at Southampton kept Manchester United level on points with neighbours City at the top of the Premier League.

The Belgian struck on 20 minutes, converting the rebound after Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster parried his header from Ashley Young's cross.

Lukaku has now scored 12 times in 10 games for club and country this season.

  9. 'Hodgson's communication is fine'published at 12:48 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Man City 5-0 Crystal Palace

    Joleon Lescott
Former England defender on BBC MOTD2 Extra

For England there was not much need for Roy Hodgson to inspire players, but his communication was fine, he got his point across. Saturday was a difficult game for them.

  10. 'A lot of work to do'published at 12:44 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Man City 5-0 Crystal Palace

Roy Hodgson had a tough job on his hands as it was, taking on Palace. The fixture list has been mighty cruel to him and the club.

Saturday is no barometer for assessing whether the ship can be turned around, so irresistible are City at present.

Roy believes Palace need to find some aspirin. I'd suggest something stronger. Anyone got a vat of morphine?

  11. 'Guardiola is improving his star players'published at 12:39 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Man City 5-0 Crystal Palace

    Guy Mowbray
    BBC commentator on MOTD2 Extra

Pep Guardiola has improved Leroy Sane. He’s improving players like David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero. They’re all getting better under him. They’ve got the best attacking line-up in the Premier League.

Did any player get better under Manuel Pellegrini?

The job Fernandinho is fantastic but it doesn’t get mentioned.

  14. 'You can see Sane's runs, but you can't stop them'published at 12:27 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

    Man City 5-0 Crystal Palace

    Joleon Lescott
Former Manchester City defender on BBC MOTD2 Extra

Leroy Sane is electric from the get go. He's playing with confidence. He looks like he enjoys his role. He's a winger, he takes people on.

When you're playing with players like David Silva, you know the ball will come. He bends his runs so he's onside. The majority of defenders can see his runs - but you can't stop them because he's so quick.

David Silva instantly took to the culture when he joined. He tried to make himself available for every event despite the fact he couldn't speak English. He's always been a favourite in the dressing room. He doesn't care [about plaudits], like Paul Scholes or Gareth Barry. He's just happy to do his job. You very rarely see someone tackle him.

Leroy Sane, eh. Probably the most recruited player in fantasy football this season. The German winger is making himself undroppable at Man City. He bagged another goal yesterday, adding to the two he scored in the Carabao Cup midweek...

We'll start with Man City, who have now scored 22 (22!) goals in their last five matches. They smacked five of them past poor Crystal Palace, who remain as far away from Pep Guardiola's team as it is possible to get without handing in their Premier League badge and gun and taking a desk job in the Championship.

Even Fabian Delph scored for Manchester City. Remember him? After seeing him grace midfield at Elland Road, it hurts to see him only occasionally sat on a Premier League bench now and again. Well, if you needed any reminding of his talent just check out yesterday's goal.

    It's not all bad news.

We might be a touch light on fixtures today, but what we do have contains enough intrigue to sustain us.

It feels a long way off right now, but at 16:00 BST the two automatic promoted teams from last year's Championship go all out for a crucial three points.

Before that, there's a Sheffield derby, which will be covered in detail via a separate live text commentary but nodded to regularly by my good self.
