Juventus failed to win a Champions League home game after being two goals ahead for the just the second time and the first time since April 1999 – losing 3-2 to Man Utd after being 2-0 up in the opening 11 minutes (semi-final second leg).

Juventus were complacent in the first half after going two goals up. It was probably the worst thing that happened to them because they sat a little bit and Tottenham had no option but to push on.

As the game developed they made their ascendancy count. Juventus were a little disappointing when you consider their results over the past three months in Italy, it is quite incredible. They faded in the second half in Cardiff when they played Real Madrid in the final last year, they’ve got some ageing players in the squad and were missing some players.

They may well have players back maybe, maybe Paulo Dybala, the clever midfielder, will be back for the second game. And they’ve had a good look at Tottenham now so they know what they are up against, this will be a titanic battle.

Gonzalo Higuaín is only the third player in Champions League history to score a brace before the 10th minute - Heimo Pfeifenberger and Julio Cruz are the others.

City’s win was the biggest away victory by an English side in the knockout stage of the Champions League (previously Liverpool’s 3-0 away victory over PSV in the quarter-finals of the 2006-07 season).

David Silva’s substitute appearance means he has now played more games in all competitions this season than any other player across the top five European leagues without suffering a single defeat (28 games).

Man City boss Pep Guardiola on BT Sport: "An excellent result. We are almost in the quarter-finals. Champions League is always 180 minutes and we will take the game seriously but it's an excellent result.

"Ilkay Gundogan is an extraordinary player. Last season we missed him a lot with an injury for six months and that's why we are so satisfied, not just the quality but personality to play.

"We are still in February and in the Premier League we are in an amazing position and we are almost in the quarter-finals, we are in one final (EFL Cup) and on Monday we have the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Game by game."

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino on BT Sport: “Fantastic game. We were sloppy and conceded two goals in nine minutes, but the character we showed was fantastic. I want to congratulate the players - 2-0 down in Turin to a team so difficult to break down. We deserved a victory more than a draw.

“We are more mature now. In the last few weeks, the team are growing and have stepped up. It’s a good example of the capacity we have.

The team was amazing in how they reacted.

“You need some luck always in football. The tie is open, Juventus are a massive team. We have the hope we can win in Wembley.”

The story will be that Juventus have blown it. You were 2-0 up in your own stadium with a supposedly impenetrable defence. But they dropped really deep, maybe a got bit low on confidence and when Spurs pressed their midfield couldn’t deal with it. I have to say Dembele was fantastic.

But Juventus had several chances to close it out, Higuain with the penalty, Bernadeschi had a chance and Mandzukic should have scored from the corner.

They needed someone like Blaise Matuidi to add a bit more drive, a bit more aggression and so they weren't bullied by Tottenham.

Ben: Dembele deserves a significant chunk of the praise tonight. Cool as ice throughout, he kept Spurs from panicking after that horrible start.

Mark: Dembele was a master in Turin tonight. Nobody got near him

Clark: Dembele you ran the show bro. The way you control the midfield is up there with the best in the world. Truly world class!!!!!!

Manchester City

Man City's double goalscorer Ilkay Gundogan on BT Sport: "The result was maybe perfect but the way we played there are still plenty of things to improve.

"It's Champions League and it's always tough - we didn't concede which was the most important thing after these goals.

"It seemed comfortable but it was tense and Basel had chances to score."

On whether Germany boss Joachim Low, watching from the stands, will have enjoyed his performance: "You need to ask him. I hope he enjoyed it."

Juventus have conceded two goals in a home Champions League game for the first time since February 2016 (2-2 against Bayern Munich).

Mousa Dembele changes direction incredibly with the inside of his foot, outside of his foot, manipulates the ball well and has got a change of pace. He's strong - we know that.

My only criticism is when he gets within 25 yards, pull the trigger, he's got a very good left foot. For me, he should be getting 10 goals a season. I know he plays a defensive role but he’s allowed to take the ball forward and he carries the ball well. He should be having shots and he doesn’t, he lays that ball off.

Manchester City

Man City captain Vincent Kompany on BT Sport: "We played against a back five and they're similar to Chelsea the way they get out, so as a back four you are stretched.

"For a Champions League game we did ever so well.

"In these kinds of situations it is about more than going through - if we have a draw at home that won't give us a good feeling."

Mwila: Too easy a game for Man City. Weak opponents. I see them winning the return by a similar score line.

Lamide: It pains me to say this, but Guardiola is an outstanding manager who's turned Manchester City into Champions League favorites. Never thought I'd see the day, but it's what word class managers do.

Anon: Manchester City go on another goal rampage in Europe. Maybe they could win four trophies.

Looks like Gonzalo Higuain was probably offside for his opening goal. Nice finish though.

Spurs goalscorer Christian Eriksen to BT Sport: "We are sure we will have chances at Wembley. We go into that game full of confidence and we’re looking forward to it."

Spurs goalscorer Harry Kane on BT Sport: "We could have done [capitulated], away from home in the Champions League. It showed character.

"It was an excellent performance after that and we take two away goals to Wembley. Great result.

"I should have scored the header but you have to be ready for the next one and I finished it off."
