It's difficult to break Juventus down as teams have found. I watched them against Fiorentina on Friday night and Fiorentina had players who could run with the ball and caused Juve problems.

As Fiorentina tired, Juve ground them down and won 2-0. Tottenham are best playing on the counter tonight. Pochettino likes to ask questions but if Spurs play with the high line and don't get it right they could pay the price.

Former City player and director Dennis Tueart on BBC Radio 5 live: "You couldn’t have wished for a better draw than Basel.

"I’d take a one-goal lead. Let’s not underestimate Basel. They’ve got a good record against British teams and develop some good players."

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino: "We are going to be aggressive, brave and try to win.

“It’s the Champions League and we are going to play one of the best teams in the world. They have unbelievable players, a great manager and it will be tough as they have a lot of experience of competing at this type of level and competition.

“We need to make everything difficult for them, try to dominate and play in our way. It will be an exciting game and we are so motivated and so excited to play.”

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini: "Stopping Kane, just me alone, is pretty impossible.

"I'm not so presumptuous or arrogant to think I can. I hope the whole of Juventus can stop Tottenham, that is what matters.

"One-to-one clashes are important but the whole team will have to do its best to limit, not only Harry Kane, but the 'fab four' [Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min] in the attacking area.

"We shouldn't just think of Tottenham as Kane, but as a whole team. They haven't reached this level by chance."

When Tottenham demolished Real Madrid at Wembley in the group stage - November's 3-1 win barely scratching the surface of their supremacy - manager Mauricio Pochettino made a bold claim.

He said: "We now belong not only among the best teams in England but in Europe and results like this will show people where we are going."

Where they are going is to Turin to face the formidable and durable Juventus, last season's beaten finalists and battled-hardened in the Champions League, having also been in the final as recently as 2015, when they lost to Barcelona.

Spurs face a tough assignment but any doubts they have over their pedigree should have been expunged not only by the manner in which they dismantled Real at home, but also their tactical excellence and discipline when earning a point at the Bernabeu.

Juve still have the foundations of a superb squad, including legendary 40-year-old goalkeeper Gigi Buffon - still on a mission to win the Champions League - defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira in midfield and the threat of Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala in attack.

City will be overwhelming favourites to progress against Basel - indeed Pep Guardiola's runaway Premier League leaders are regarded by many as favourites to win the Champions League.

This meeting with Basel, however, comes with large warning signs attached.

Basel have proved a bogey side to English clubs in the past, winning four and losing one of their past five home games against them in the Champions League.

They beat Manchester United in the group stage, wrecked Liverpool's hopes with a win at home and draw away, and have also seen off Chelsea in recent years. They also got the better of Tottenham in a two-legged Europa League tie.

If City take Basel lightly amid the compact and steepling stands of the atmospheric St Jakob Park, they will do so at their peril.

Basel's Dimitri Oberlin has scored four goals in his past five Champions League games but City - even without the injured Gabriel Jesus - should have the weaponry to progress.

  8. 'Sane is OK but not perfect'published at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2018

City boss Pep Guardiola to BT Sport: "We are confident to go through but we know what will happen if we're not at our level.

"Leroy Sane is on the bench because he can play. He's OK but he's not perfect. We'll see how the game goes."

    Raphael WickyImage source, Getty Images

Basel boss Raphael Wicky: "The quality of the players, and the coach who is putting into practice the same kind of football as he did with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, makes them unbelievably strong.

"Their team has almost no weaknesses, they are extremely adaptable and react very well to whatever situation their opponents put them in.

"We always try to have a plan and we have another plan tomorrow but it’s not just about football strategy and tactics.

"We need a perfect game, we must show lots of courage, the fans have to be behind us... everything must come together.

"We must have a perfect evening to pull off a surprise... but we believe we can do it."

But Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is more optimistic.

"We've been caught out on occasions when we shouldn't have but I think things have changed now.

"If there is a year, a time, a moment when the club is ready to feel at home in the competition then it's now.

"I'm not going to say it's a matter of time because some clubs never win it but, if every year we can go in with this kind of confidence, then if not this year, or next year, eventually we'll get there. I'm sure of it."

  12. Can Man City win the Champions League?published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2018

Basel v Man City (19:45 GMT)

Manchester City are the 3-1 bookies' favourites to win the tournament (possibly helped by a relatively kind draw).

City boss Pep Guardiola was asked if they can win the thing.

"I don't know, really I don't. I don't know if we are ready or not.

"I have a lot of confidence in the guys. But this competition is special so I don't know.

"Our target is to do better than last season, which is to go to the quarter-finals."

Former Liverpool and Switzerland right-back Philipp Degen started and ended his career at FC Basel, spending 15 years at the club.

“They lost Manuel Akanji to Borussia Dortmund in the January window but the strength of the team is defence and being able to counter attack with their fast players in attack. They have good wingers and with these players they can create chances.

"I know the coach Raphael Wicky very well and I think maybe he will try to attack them and not sit back.

"As a coach it's new because it's his first professional season as a head coach but I think for FC Basel this is a situation where they can't lose.

"Two games where you can do everything to try to get to the next round but you can't lose. There is a little chance of an upset but of course Man City have great players. It's a small chance.”

Manchester City have won only one of their six away games in the Champions League knockout stages (D1 L4).

This will be the first competitive meeting between the sides.

Basel - who have won the last eight Swiss league titles - are in danger of ending that run of dominance this season.

They sit five points behind Young Boys in the table, and warmed up for this game with a 2-0 win over Thun.

Holders Basel are also in the Swiss Cup semi-finals, where they also face their title rivals.

We’re into the minus temperatures in Switzerland and Manchester City’s players have just been heartily booed as they entered the arena.

Raheem Sterling has joined Argentines Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero in opting for the warmth of a snood for the warm-up and one rather excitable City fan reminded me several times on the way into the ground that if Aguero scores a hat-trick tonight then he’ll have scored 200 goals for the club and not to forget to mention that on the radio!

  19. 'Kane highly rated in Italy'published at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2018

    Juventus v Spurs (19:45 GMT)

    Mina Rzouki
European football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

In the Italian media they think Harry Kane is one of the most complete and intelligent strikers in Europe.

Against most sides Juventus have the edge in terms of structure, solidity and balance. But Tottenham are also a very balanced side, they can defend, they can attack and have a striker like Kane in the side who can bring others into play as well as score goals, has special awareness and is clinical.

He really is the man that everyone is looking at thinking barring maybe Lewandowski, one of the great strikers. Very highly rated in Italy,

    Juventus v Spurs (19:45 GMT)

    James Horncastle
European football writer on BBC Euro Leagues Football Show

Gonzalo Higuain suffers from the perception that in big games he’s choked and missed chances. But the view of him in Italy is different, where he’s seen as always stepping up in the big games.

What’s great going into this one is that Harry Kane and Higuain are in really good form. Higuain killed off a clutch game against Fiorentina at the weekend. Can be build on the latter stages of the Champions League last season?

Juventus' run of form in the last 16 games has come when Paulo Dybala has been benched or injured. That's where they've found balance.
