Neymar became the 31st Brazilian to play for Paris-Germain since they were set up in 1970.

By comparison, Real Madrid have only had 24 in their 116 years.

So how has a city without a common climate or language, lacking either a long history or sizeable expatriate population, become a favourite staging post for Brazilians coming to Europe?

If anyone was in any danger of any complacency at Anfield tonight then have a read of Jurgen Klopp’s programme notes and you can practically hear him booming these words out in the dressing room.

“This attitude is not allowed inside Anfield this evening for anyone associated with Liverpool Football Club.

If I was in the FC Porto side this evening I would be looking forward to this match more than any other of my professional career. So we must do more than simply mirror the passion and desire they will show. We must surpass it, we must be at a higher level - players, staff and supporters.”

It might not be the worst thing in the world that Neymar is not playing as you might get a better team spirit. It looks like a classic PSG team and it might work in their favour.

  8. 'Neymar absence could boost PSG unity'published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2018

PSG v Real Madrid (19:45 GMT, 1-3 first leg)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

PSG certainly believe they can go through.

You lose Neymar, you lose your best player. But you might have gained more unity for your team and a better collective. When he plays you give him the ball and wait a bit for him to do something special.

When he’s not there you know you have to do a bit more - so your full-backs have to do more, your midfielders need to run into space. Maybe you would tend to let Neymar do his thing when he’s on the pitch.

However it’s still a big task, to not concede against Real Madrid. I would make Real Madrid slight favourites, maybe 65-35.

The noise has been extraordinary. They really do believe. The history for PSG at this ground, they have had amazing results. They need to be better psychologically, but that is the big question.

  10. What's happened since the first leg?published at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2018

PSG v Real Madrid (19:45 GMT, 1-3 first leg)

Since Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to win the first leg, the champions have won four of their five La Liga matches.

This time last week, they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol - but have beaten Getafe since then.

PSG as you'd expect have won all four games, including two 3-0 victories over rivals Marseille (one in the French Cup).

  11. What's happened since the first leg?published at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2018

Liverpool v Porto (19:45 GMT, 5-0 first leg)

Three weeks ago, Liverpool thrashed Porto 5-0 with Sadio Mane scoring a hat-trick.

Since then, they have beaten West ham 4-1 and Newcastle 2-0 in the Premier League to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Porto have been busier, playing four times in their top flight - winning all of them, including Friday's 2-1 win over old rivals Sporting Lisbon. They are now five points clear at the top of the table.

Delighted that Lallana starts, good to see Gomez fit too. Disappointed not to see Ings or Solanke in place of Firmino, even more that Solanke doesn't make the squad.

I don’t think we’re going to get much Champions League drama at Anfield tonight but there’s no denying this is a magnificent stage to play it out on.

The Porto fans are in early to take it all in and they are making one heck of a noise already. There’s clearly a lot of pride to play for from their point of view after their team was humbled at the Dragao.

Former Real Madrid and Germany keeper Bodo Illgner has been speaking to the BBC World Service about tonight's game.

Real have won the Champions League in each of the past two seasons - but sit 15 points behind Barcelona in La Liga.

“The only thing left for them this season is our competition, the Real Madrid competition - the Champions League, where the team transforms.

"Twelve titles in the club speaks its own words, two in a row lately. It is this competition that transforms Real Madrid and transforms the players. It’s hard to explain but it is like that.”
