Exactly Phil. Are they not allowed to make a decision?

Anyway... can Spurs exploit the situation even further? Son Heung-min has been a busy little bee in this opening quarter. Spurs clearly think he can exploit the space behind the forward-thinking wing-back Douglas Costa.

Son buzzes down the left flank, into the area and is about to cross when he is swatted away by the covering Chiellini.

  2. Why is the official there?published at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Juventus rightly furious as a clear penalty is waved away by the referee as Jan Vertonghen brings down Douglas Costa - and ignored by the assistant standing five yards away looking right at it.

For those questioning what is the point of these extra officials and what they actually do, that is a classic case.

Relief for Spurs and every one of their supporters inside Wembley.

  3. Postpublished at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Man City 1-1 Basel (agg 5-1)

Basel's social media team have not given up hope yet...

  4. Postpublished at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

This game is not disappointing. After that scare at one end, Spurs go up the other and threaten the Juve goal... Son Heung-min jumps with more spring than Colin Jackson to hang in the air and power a header goalwards. But Gianluigi Buffon is well placed to punch clear.

We're at Playstation pace at Wembley.

  5. 'Clear penalty'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

    George Cummins

At a guess I would say we are 80 yards away from that Douglas Costa penalty shout. Me, Mark Chapman and Chris Sutton all thought that was a penalty from here.

Three officials were within 20 yards including the sixth official behind the goal. Juventus fans are going mad and it looks like Spurs have got out of jail there.

Helles Mammut: now Stonewall penalty in favour of Juventus not given... but UEFA is still trying to say VAR isn't necessary...

DigitalTeez: Stonewall penalty there. And I'm a Spurs fan.

DeathApeDisco: Those fourth officials just go stand out there for a night off really don't they.

  7. Lucky escapepublished at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

My initial reaction was penalty to Juventus, I think there was contact.

Spurs have got away with that one. It was really poor from Vertonghen.

I can understand the Juventus players' frustration.

  8. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

Big call. Juventus should have a penalty, no doubt. Douglas Costa is cleaned out by Jan Vertonghen, who clips the Juve winger's feet in the box.

Referee Szymon Marciniak shakes his head - not sure what he, or his assistant, are looking at. All day long.

Juve's players, understandably, go nuts at the decision.

GOAL - Man City 1-1 Basel (agg 5-1)published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Mohamed Elyounoussi (17 mins)

    Is the comeback on?

No, but Basel are level on the night. Mohamed Elyounoussi gets the ball in plenty of space in the centre of the box, he takes a touch and rifles it past Claudio Bravo.

Moments earlier, Ilkay Gundogan almost made it 2-0, but his shot from Bernardo Silva's cross was straight at Tomas Vaclik.

  10. 'Big chance'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

A big chance for Harry Kane, he left Giorgio Chiellini in his wake.

He had to hit the target there. If that chance was to fall to anyone, you would choose Harry Kane.

  11. Postpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

Harry Kane has got Giorgio Chiellini on toast. And here's another chance...

Kane rolls the Juve defender easily, rounds Gigi Buffon... surely? No! The Spurs striker, uncharacteristically, can't roll in from an acute angle, instead finding the side-netting.

  12. Postpublished at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

Back to Wembley where the action is just as helter skelter. Harry Kane tries to bulldoze his way through the rugged Juve defence, before Giorgio Chiellini clumsily slides in on Kane. Another half-hearted shout for a peno, but the ref says no.

  13. 'Vertonghen key'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Jan Vertonghen is going to be key for Spurs at the back, organising Davinson Sanchez and making sure he's in the right positions. He'll be making Spurs compact.

I think there are a few nerves among the Spurs players. Mauricio Pochettino said how they should enjoy the game but that's easier said than done.

  14. Postpublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Man City 1-0 Basel (agg 5-0)

Uff, the chances are coming quicker at the Etihad than I can type.

First, Basel midfielder Geoffroy Serey Die blasts high over the City goal when well placed - think that's ended up in the canal behind the goal.

Then Bernando Silva is denied by a last-ditch sliding block, then Danilo sees a shot deflected over. Phew.

  15. 'Good as done'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Man City 1-0 Basel (agg 5-0)

    Conor McNamara

Gabriel Jesus finished a sweeping move. Pep Guardiola is going to be so happy. This game is as good as done.

  16. goal

GOAL - Man City 1-0 Baselpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Gabriel Jesus (8 mins)

The tie was already over. Now it is definitely over.

Gabriel Jesus is starting for the first time this year, but he has lost none of his sharpness in front of goal.

To be fair, my gran could have tapped it in. On a plate. Slick interplay from City ends in Bernado Silva crosses for Jesus to tap in from close range.

    Tottenham 0-0 Juventus (agg 2-2)

Juventus aren't too fussed about sitting back either on the evidence of this opening seven minutes. They've got plenty of numbers forward as Douglas Costa floats one in, Gonzalo Higuain is a couple of inches too short.

  18. Uefa callingpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Man City 0-0 FC Basel

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

I counted five flares being lit by the FC Basel supporters in the visiting section of the ground as the teams emerged from the tunnel.

It is fair to assume the Swiss club can expect a fine from Uefa for that.

At least they won't have far to go to pay it given Uefa's headquarters are in Nyon.

  19. Postpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Man City 0-0 Basel (agg 4-0)

First chance for Manchester City. Similar to Son's effort for Spurs... Leroy Sane powers down the left channel, cuts in and pings a low one at the Basel goal. But away keeper Tomas Vaclik gathers.

Banko GeraldMark: Experience counts here, could be reminiscent of yesterday's El Cashico..forza Juve.

Lotak: Spurs have to press. We can't sit back for 90 mins trying to soak pressure. Has never worked for us this season. Juve showed in Turin that they can crack under pressure. We need to be brave.
