Fair play to the Basel fans who have made the 1,200km trek from their city on the banks of the Rhine in Switzerland to Manchester tonight. They are making plenty of noise but all of them probably already know that their side’s 4-0 first leg defeat has all but finished this tie as a contest.

Perhaps understandably, no team has come back from that big a deficit to progress in a knock-out round in the 25-year history of the Champions League.

On top of that, only two teams have ever recovered from losing the first leg at home by any score.

Ajax overturned a 1-0 deficit against Panathinaikos in 1995-96 to win 3-1 on aggregate, and Inter Milan recovered from the same first-leg score to go through on away goals with a 3-2 away win over Bayern Munich in 2010-11.

So history is against the Swiss tonight, as well as Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring side. I expect their supporters will still enjoy themselves though.

Back up north, and Phil Foden is getting a few words in his right ear from City assistant manager Mikel Arteta.

Foden is just 17, remember. SEVENTEEN! By rights he should be hanging around in the Arndale Centre, not playing for City's first team.

The Reddish Ronaldo will become the youngest Englishman to play in the Champions League knockout phase.

  3. Spurs fans prepare for an epicpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Big ovation for the Spurs players as they go to a corner of Wembley to continue their warm-up - this already has the feel of a big Champions League occasion.

There is an air of cautious optimism around the stadium from the home support but it is liberally laced with great respect for the threat posed by last season's losing finalists.

    • 83% of teams to have drawn 2-2 away in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie have progressed to the next round (10 out of 12).

This is a totally different scenario to Turin. Spurs were 2-0 down, had nothing to lose, and grew in confidence.

Their approach is going to be really difficult. I can guarantee the Tottenham players will not be enjoying this game, it's about concentration and not making mistakes.

For Spurs to go through, Davinson Sanchez is going to have to have a really big game tonight. I'm a big fan of his, but he's going to have to step up tonight.

It will be interesting to see if Man City go for it tonight. I really hope that Basel go for it, I'd love to see them throw the kitchen sink at it.

City's defence has been known to wobble on occasion.

"Anything can happen in football." "It's not over until the final whistle." Etc, etc.

Most managers would trot out the familiar cliches as they were preparing to face one of Europe's best teams with a 4-0 deficit. Not, quite refreshingly, Basel manager Raphael Wicky...

"I could say, 'You have to believe' but it'd look a bit daft in front of the team. We have to set other targets. It starts 0-0 and we have to treat this as two halves and try to get something from the first half and see what happens," says Wicky.

"I've talked to my team and said, 'Look, it's incredible Basel are still playing in Europe in the last 16 of the Champions League at the start of March.

"We've worked hard to be here, we're in a very difficult position but we have to enjoy this game, give our all and forget the first leg."

The Juve fans are already making themselves heard - above the media mob trying to do their pitchside pieces to camera. London, Wembley... got to be up there with the great midweek away trips. Beats Oldham and Boundary Park.

  17. Night of reckoning for Spurs?published at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

Spurs have put themselves into a position of rich promise to reach the Champions League quarter-finals after coming from two goals down to earn a first leg draw against Juventus in Turin.

No-one, least of all Spurs and manager Mauricio Pochettino, will be under-estimating this battle-hardened and formidable Juventus side but they are clearly favourites with those two away goals in the bag.

And it promises to be an atmospheric night at Wembley with thousands of Juve fans already inside the stadium and making their presence felt.

    Tottenham v Juventus (19:45 GMT)

Just the one change for Tottenham from the side that started the 2-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday as Kieran Trippier comes in for the suspended Serge Aurier.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dembele, Dier, Eriksen, Alli, Kane, Son. Substitutes: Vorm, Rose, Lamela, Wanyama, Sissoko, Llorente, Lucas Moura.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, who scored twice in the 2-2 draw in the first leg in Italy, starts after recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the 1-0 Serie A win at Lazio on Saturday.

Paulo Dybala is also fit to start for only the second time since January after a hamstring injury, but Mario Mandzukic did not travel to London because of a thigh injury.

Juventus: Buffon, Barzagli, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Dybala, Higuain, Douglas Costa. Substitutes: Szczesny, Marchisio, Asamoah, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Bentancur.
