Guardiola is a very intense driven individual and he will be at the training group first thing tomorrow morning and looking at what happened, why Otamendi has run out of steam because he is making major mistakes at the back. He will analyse this.

I do have some sympathy with Pep, UEFA have these Harry Potters with wands behind the goals and UEFA don’t believe in VAR. So even though VAR has had a difficult season, in terms of getting correct decisions on the night it would have been great.

What I love about Klopp is he always looks like he is enjoying it. He’s a classy guy. If there was list of Premier League managers you want to go on a night out it is Klopp. He is enjoying his football and it is certainly enjoying watching it.

One of the great European results in the club's history?

  8. 'The referee is a special guy'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

It's probably fair to say Pep Guardiola is not a fan of tonight's referee...

He told BT Sport: "Congratulations to Liverpool first of all. We will be back stronger in this competition next season.

"In the right moment we miss the right decisions. The referee is a special guy, he likes to be different. Whenever people see the things, he will decide the opposite."

  9. 'We used the momentum'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

More from Jurgen: "You have to learn from the game, I had no problem conceding the early goal but we were still moaning, having little fights, want free-kick’s where there were no free-kicks. That’s not how to play.

"We needed to be more compact, we shouted that like crazy. We needed to stay in the football playing mood, show up and want the ball. If you don’t score a second and third it’s not that easy and we used the momentum for us.

"If you score one goal the atmosphere is different - nobody goes to the semi-finals twice being the much better side."

  10. 'It's not about perfection it’s about the result'published at 22:19 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "It was quite difficult tonight, again especially with the start. This wonderful goal that we served them on a plate. I was expecting something like that but I liked the reaction immediately after that.

"City took all the risks they could take, we needed a bit of luck and a disciplined defending formation. I was not overly happy at half-time to be honest.

"He (Pep Guardiola) took all the risks and it was his decision and it could’ve been the absolute right one, it's easy to say afterwards. They could’ve scored two or three goals in the first half but it was 100% clear that if we win the ball we’d have an opportunity.

"The last situation in the first half was how you do the counter-attack and that’s how we scored the two goals. It’s not about perfection it’s about the result, the character, the mentality, really fighting for the result. We defended well, it's not our best game but we deserved it at the end."

  12. 'We have to recover mentally'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

More from Pep: "We’ve had 10 amazing months. We have to recover mentally for the six games remaining. Our 10 month winning spell is exceptional. You have to analyse game by game."

  13. 'It would have been different'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, on being sent to the stands: "I said it was a goal when the ball was passed to Leroy Sane. That’s why he sent me off. It would have been different to go in 2-0 . It’s different when Salah’s goal at Anfield is offside. It’s different when Gabriel Jesus' goal at Anfield is offside.

"In this competition the teams are so equal and the influence of refereeing decisions is so important. We’ll go again next season. Big congratulations to Liverpool, Hopefully they can represent England well in the semi-final."

  14. Postpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Time for some manager reaction and it's fair to say Pep Guardiola is not happy with a few decisions over the two legs...

Jack: Pep needs to learn that he should preserve some energy for the second half. Two consecutive games now where we have led at half time and chucked it away to lose. The offside which was incorrect, however, has massively changed the game, and the result.

Jacob: Guardiola's problem? Cowardice. No faith. In neither game did they play their standard 4-3-3 from this season - which WORKS.

  16. 'Underestimate Roma at your peril'published at 22:03 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

    Roma 3-0 Barcelona 4-4 agg

    James Horncastle
European football writer on BBC Radio 5 live

Some say this Barcelona side isn't a vintage one, but still they are still unbeaten in the league.

It is an extraordinary achievement for Roma. People continue to underestimate this Roma side. In the group stages, the group of death with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, no one thought they would get through and they topped the group.

The have won every Champions League game at the Olimpico whiout conceding a goal. That's up agaisnt Eden Hazard, Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez.

    Underestimate them at your peril.

  17. 'Milner magnificent'published at 22:00 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

There's plenty of former Liverpool players taking to twitter to talk about tonight's result.

  18. 'Maybe it woke us up'published at 21:54 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Man City 1-2 Liverpool 1-5 agg

Liverpool midfielder James Milner speaking to BT Sport:

"They’re a good team and they were always going to put us under pressure. They had chances but that shows a lot about how we came out in the second half.

"Maybe it woke us up to concede that early, it says a lot about the boys coming under that pressure in first half and in the second half last week. In the second half today we got hold of it slightly more but we still have to improve.

"Everyone knows how good Manchester City are so to beat them is a good confidence builder but we have to be better in the next round.

"We got about them a bit more in the second half, kept ball slightly better, were more composed that’s the key, it’s what you have to do against these sorts of teams."
