    Watford 0-0 Brighton

There are high hopes of a good year at Brighton, who impressed folk last season and have added well this summer. One of the old guard - striker Glenn Murray - is inches away from sticking his head on a left-wing cross.

    Watford 0-0 Brighton

Abdoulaye Doucoure was pretty handy on an attacking front last season, as many a Fantasy Football manager will tell you. But he has a bit of a shocker as Watford break at pace with Brighton exposed. The midfielder's control lets him down twice and Albion can rally to clear.

The good thing for traditionalists about Fulham being back in the Premier League is their Craven Cottage stadium.

A proper, old school ground, full of wood everywhere, tight and spectators close to the action.

The home supporters nearly have a goal to cheer when Cyrus Christie's low shot is beaten away at the front post by Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

  12. 'A tough one to predict'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

    Watford v Brighton (15:00 BST)

    John Roder
    Match of the Day commentator

Watford finished one place and one point above Brighton at the end of last season, with both clubs having breathing space between themselves and the bottom three.

And yet the results in the final quarter of last season give cause for concern, as Watford start a fourth successive Premier League campaign and Brighton their second.

Watford have never won their opening fixture in the Premier League, and this is certainly a tough one to predict with any degree of conviction.

A repeat of last year's goalless draw will probably end up last in the running order on Match of Day, so let's hope for a thriller instead!

  13. 'Town have a real chance'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

    Huddersfield v Chelsea (15:00 BST)

    Guy Mowbray
    Match of the Day commentator

Huddersfield almost surely won't finish above Chelsea this season, but they have a decent chance to beat them to start it.

Since fighting to stay up (aided by a famous 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge)it has been a settled summer of steady business for Town.

With a few in and a few out, their squad looks marginally (not massively) better than for their first Premier League campaign.

I expect Chelsea to be better than last time too, but maybe not from the off.

Antonio Conte's protracted departure and the late return of World Cup stars make it likely that Maurizio Sarri will need time to make his mark.

If and when he does, the Blues should be fun to watch.

  14. 'Fulham's signings a cut above'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

Fulham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

    Kevin Kilbane
Former Republic of Ireland winger on Final Score

The style Fulham were playing in the Championship is as good as I've seen in that league. Can they replicate that?

The calibre of player they have brought in is a cut above so Fulham will be very good this season.

  15. Fulham pick up where they left offpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

Fulham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

    Steve Bower
    Match of the Day commentator

A 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace back in May 2014 marked the end of Premier League football for Fulham but a repeat of that fixture begins life back in the top flight for the Whites.

Slavisa Jokanovic has realised the need for new faces, and heavy recruitment has only raised the level of anticipation.

Palace need only to go back to the opening day of last season, when they were well beaten by Huddersfield, to be warned of the potential momentum of a play-off winner.

Revered ex-Fulham boss Roy Hodgson returns to the club where he will always have a place in history, but determined to mark his 71st birthday on Thursday in positive fashion.

  16. One on the up, the other heading back down?published at 14:52 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

    Bournemouth v Cardiff (15:00 BST)

    Mark Scott
    Match of the Day commentator

With Eddie Howe believing this could be the strongest squad he's ever had at Bournemouth, improving on last season's respectable 12th-placed finish is a realistic target.

Their transfer business certainly spoke volumes about how upwardly mobile they are these days, with Jefferson Lerma arriving for a club record fee and Diego Rico choosing the Cherries over Borussia Dortmund.

Cardiff's modest dealings have done little to dissuade the many who view them as relegation favourites, but Neil Warnock's admitted he never gets tired of proving people wrong.

Warnock says getting the Bluebirds up via a record eighth promotion was the greatest achievement of his career, keeping them there would surely top the lot though.

    Simon Stone

It is rare for a manager to observe what is happening during the pre-match warm-up at first-hand.

But, having said yesterday his job would be more complicated in the early weeks of the season because his appointment was confirmed after Chelsea's players had returned from their summer break, Maurizio Sarri is taking the opportunity to see how his players go about their work.

Fulham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

Yes they've spent money, but there is a lot more to Fulham than that.

They play really good football under Slavisa Jokanovic. If the new players bed in quickly they could make a few Premier League sides look a bit daft this season.

Palace will not have forgotten what happened when they faced another newly-promoted side, Huddersfield, on the first day of last season.

Don't forget that Fulham v Palace is on 5 live this afternoon. So get your ears involved.

  20. 'Can Fulham's new faces adapt?'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 11 August 2018

Fulham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

    Mark Schwarzer
    Ex-Chelsea keeper on Football Focus

The money Fulham have spent is quite a shock, the first promoted club to spend over £100m. For any team to do that before the start of a season is remarkable.

The big question is the players coming in, very few have Premier League experience apart from Andre Schurrle. Will they be able to adapt quickly? Fulham need steel and Premier League experience, not many of them have it.
