  1. 'Bailly and Lindelof would be playing if they had kicked on'published at 19:23 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Manchester United v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

    Ian Wright
Former Arsenal & England striker on BBC Radio 5 live

If Jose Mourinho had had his way and Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof had kicked on the way he wanted to, the two he has picked tonight (Chris Smalling and Phil Jones) wouldn't be playing. I'm excited to see how this one turns out.

  2. 'Matic a different level of experience'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Manchester United v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports:

"If I don’t play [Antonio] Valencia, [Nemanja] Matic, [Jesse] Lingard when they are ready I don’t think you’d accept it. You’d ask why I don’t play important players in the team when they are ready to play.

"Tottenham had similar problems, every professional player, a guy like Matic who came from surgery, for 90 minutes, they have to be ready to make that effort.

"He’s a player who gives balance to the team, Andreas [Pereira] has done well but Matic is a different level of experience and I think we need that.

"You can expect 11 players, I hope to see fighting hard with great organisation when we don’t have the ball but also expect a team of 11 to be involved in an attacking dynamic when we have the ball. We have to score goals to win the game."

  3. 'Spurs aim to add to Mourinho's recent discomfort'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Manchester United v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

    John Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

The mood of the Manchester United manager looks likely to improve only with the winning of football matches.

That is something they have been consistently able to do at Old Trafford against Tottenham in the four years that Mauricio Pochettino has been in charge.

In their most recent meeting, the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley in April, United ended Spurs' hopes of winning their first trophy under the Argentine.

But Tottenham have won two out of two, Harry Kane has broken his August goal-scoring duck, and their mood will be to add to Jose Mourinho's recent discomfort.

    • What is a good season for Manchester United and Tottenham?
    • Is Jose Mourinho the right man to be Manchester United manager?
    • What's going to happen tonight?
    • Can either of these teams win the Premier League this season?

P S Parameswaran: Is Jose the right man at #mufc, external? Don't think so. The Portuguese is a journeyman manager & does anything for three points. Quality takes backseat when he's at helm. If Manchester United want to cultivate certain style of football they should have gone for someone else.

Paul Aubin: 1. Top 4 would be a good season for both but could do with trophy to appease the fans 2. No, Mourinho's in no way the right man. Too divisive and the fans can't get behind him. 3. 2-1 to Tottenham 4. No they can't, too many stronger teams than them.

Journeyman manager? Really? Two Champions League titles, three Premier League titles, Uefa Cup, Europa League, plus many more trophies! Harsh P S, very harsh.

  5. Spurs' Son striving to avoid soldier servicepublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

So no Son Heung-min for Tottenham tonight as he is currently on Asian Games duty with South Korea. Spurs fans will actually be hoping Son's country can win the gold medal in that competition as that would get him out of a forced spell of military service.

Son, 26, is yet to carry out the two-year mandatory military service expected of his countrymen, but an Asian Games gold, or a top three finish in the Olympic Games are the only automatic way for a South Korean footballer to be excused.

South Korea face Syria or Vietnam in the Asian Games semi-finals on Wednesday, before the final on Saturday, with the Spurs man trying to avoid the basic training, military drills and combat essentials that would come in the near future if they lose.

Sorry Tottenham fans your record at Old Trafford is not much better reading if you delve a little further back in history to the days before the Premier League.

Yes, football did exist before 1992, but Tottenham's record at Old Trafford was hardly any better back then.

Spurs' only league victory at Old Trafford between 1992 and 1978 came on a freezing December day in 1989.

And as a collectors' item, the goal came courtesy of a certain Gary Lineker, who cut in from the left and curled in a beauty from 18-yards at the old Scoreboard End of the ground.

    • Is Jose Mourinho the right man to be Manchester United manager?
    • What's going to happen tonight?
    • Can either of these teams win the Premier League this season?

Stephen Quinn: 1. Both would benefit from a trophy, but need top four too 2. Mourinho IS the right man, if he moves away from the defensive boring style he is now known for 3. Probably a boring 0-0 4. No they can't win the league, Man City will win it, Liverpool 2nd.

Paul Watts-Othen: Spurs need top four in what is another transitional season. Next year we win trophies. COYS.

Khristian: Only winning the league counts as a good season for United, also Jose is the (only) man to lead us back to where we belong, he was made for United. I also believe United win tonight by a big scoreline. Three-four goal margin.

Not a big fan of that "boring 0-0" Stephen! Let's keep it positive!

Six changes for Manchester United from the side that lost 3-2 at Brighton, with Eric Bailly, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Andreas Pereira, who all started that match, not in the squad at all.

Two changes for Tottenham with Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose in for Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies.

  15. 'No problems' with Woodward - Mourinhopublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

You never know what you are going to get with Jose Mourinho.

And this weekend he kept the media on their toes by turning up half an hour early for his news conference, hardly answered a question and then vanished after only a few minutes.

However, he did say that he had "no problems" with chief executive Ed Woodward, despite the club failing to secure a number of his wanted signings in the summer.

  16. How they standpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Tottenham could, in theory, be top at the end of the day, but they need to win by a four-goal margin to do so. If they do, grab the popcorn because Jose Mourinho's news conference will be unmissable.

Any Spurs win takes them above Manchester City and Bournemouth into fourth, while a three-goal victory will move them second.

    TableImage source, .

Meanwhile, a two-goal win for United will take them above Spurs and into sixth, but if Mourinho's side take a walloping then they could end the day as low as 13th.

  17. Pogba needs to grow up & get on with his football - Incepublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

He may well have helped France win the World Cup in the summer and scored in the final but Paul Pogba still has his critics - including ex-Manchester United midfielders Paul Ince and Paul Scholes.

Watch below an interview with Ince from after their opening game, when he says the French midfielder should "let his football do the talking" and that "no player is bigger than Manchester United".

  18. Pogba questions United's attitudepublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Manchester United will be aiming to impress tonight after a shock 3-2 loss at Brighton last time out. It was not just the game, but the quotes afterwards that surprised many.

"The attitude that we had was not like we wanted to beat them. They had more anger than us and that showed on the pitch," captain Paul Pogba told Sky Sports. "I put myself first. My attitude wasn't right enough. We'll keep trying and keep pushing and obviously it's a lesson for us."

    Media caption,

Brighton 3-2 Man Utd: We didn't have the right attitude - Paul Pogba

Meanwhile, boss Jose Mourinho said he would not blame individuals, despite admitting his side made "incredible mistakes".

The Portuguese has previously singled out players for criticism if he felt they performed below expectations but said his side were not good enough as a collective against Brighton.

"We were punished by the mistakes we made," he said. "For me that's the story of the game. We made incredible mistakes in some crucial moments. Mistakes that killed us."

    Better tonight, or more problems?

  19. Thanks for joining uspublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

I'm Michael Emons and I'm lucky enough to be talking you through all the action between two of the Premier League's big hitters tonight.

We also have live BBC Radio 5 live build-up and commentary from Old Trafford from 19:00 BST so it's going to be a good one.

  20. A strange startpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 27 August 2018

Second in the Premier League last season, but this has been one strange start to the campaign for Manchester United.

A failure to bring in a number of players Jose Mourinho wanted in the summer, the captain criticising the team's attitude in a surprise loss at Brighton, ex-stars taking aim at the current squad and questions over the manager's relationship with key players and senior club officials.

But everything will be rosy again if they can turn on the style tonight. It won't be easy though as Tottenham, third in 2017-18 and with a 100% record in 2018-19, stand in their way.
