The more the game goes on, the more you feel Spurs are just beginning to fancy this. They are putting the United backline under real pressure now.

  2. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

A hugely enjoyable first half this one. Dele Alli sticks a pass through the legs of a United defender but Lucas Moura, running from deep, cannot pick it up and just misses out on a potential shot.

  3. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

Fred, in the penalty area, but on his unfavoured right foot, tries to create some space for a cross, but gets it all wrong and it goes harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

  4. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

Ander Herrera, part of Manchester United's back three, is caught out with a diagonal ball over him to find Dele Alli free on the left, but Herrera recovers just in time with a sliding challenge to block the shot.

  5. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

A half-chance for Tottenham. A ball into the box finds the lively Lucas Moura, but his first touch means he has to go backwards not forwards.

He lays it off to Christian Eriksen on the edge of the box but his shot is not filled with much power and David de Gea dives down and holds on to it.

Ben: Bailly gives away a penalty last week. Jones and Smalling both diving into challenges and risking penalties tonight. Is it any wonder Jose is annoyed at not getting any new centre backs in?

Sonny: Manchester Utd get another decision at OT go their way again. We need VAR to stop this obvious bias!

Kev: And that’s why United will never vote in favour of VAR

That's Romelu Lukaku's touches on the left, and Harry Kane's on the right.

One is getting all the chances, while the other isn't getting a sniff.

  8. CLOSE!published at 34 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

So close again for United. Danny Rose fails to clear properly and it eventually falls to Paul Pogba on the edge of the penalty area, his low strike is well pushed away by Hugo Lloris, who got down well to keep it out.

But the chance has not gone and Valencia's cross from the right finds Nemanja Matic, whose effort takes a massive deflection off Jan Vertonghen and much to Spurs fans' relief goes just wide. The corner forces Hugo Lloris into a punch just underneath his own bar and the visitors hold out. Just.

And straight down the other end we go. And Fred, who has looked lively for Manchester United, curls an effort just wide.

My first instinct was there wasn't enough contact for Lucas Moura to go down. But there is a shove and I think that is a penalty. It's clumsy from Phil Jones and United have got away with one there.

  11. Penalty shout for Spurs - not givenpublished at 29 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

A wonderful jinking run from Lucas Moura comes to end when he is challenged by Phil Jones, who has certainly leaned into his man.

The Spurs player goes to ground in the penalty area, but referee Craig Pawson waves away the protests, much to Moura's disbelief.

Jones may well have had a lucky escape on that one.

  12. CLOSE!published at 27 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham

A good game this one. Another chance for Manchester United, but Romelu Lukaku, free in the penalty area, can only head just off target. That's three chances he has had already tonight.

Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford are among the options for Jose Mourinho on the bench if Lukaku continues to be wasteful.

One postscript to the six changes Jose Mourinho has made to the Manchester United line-up tonight.

Two of the players who did not even make the bench were Anthony Martial and Juan Mata.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy inquired about the pair earlier in the summer. He was told neither were for sale. Mourinho has decided he can do without both men tonight.

We have not mentioned Dele Alli tonight, but the England midfielder just had a great chance. Nemanja Matic is dispossessed and Alli is free on the edge of the area.

He looks to be in two minds between a shot and squaring it to Harry Kane, in the end, an excellent piece of defending from Chris Smalling, performing a well-timed challenge, stops him making either option.

Steven: Must be very annoying for the fans from London having to travel to and from Manchester on a bank holiday night. Tough life being a United fan...

Nick: Just woke up from the strangest dream...expecting to watch Man U and Spurs but apparently the cameras had gone to a pub league game instead....same strips but that's about all...

Danny: I've seen players take a red for a high boot in action for many premier league teams. When it's Jones receiving it's portrayed as "if anyone can take it he can"

    Steven, don't even go there!

I think that yellow card is harsh because where is Harry Kane supposed to follow through to? His momentum takes him through.
