It's so unlucky from Harry Kane.

A long ball from Jordan Pickford and then a good lay-off for Kane to chase. And then it's a lovely chip and Yann Sommer was struggling there.

  4. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 2 mins

    Off the bar!

What a goal that would have been. Harry Kane played into the right-hand side of the area, similar sort of coordinates to those that Alan Shearer scored from against the Swiss at Euro 96, and he goes for the dink which hits the bar and bounces out!

    Almost gold.

Marvin Happe: I really don’t see the point of playing Pickford in this match. We know about his flaws. Southgate is too stuck on his favourites.

Imlay: I trust England fans will be booing Trent Alexander-Arnold for being a Liverpool player like they did Virgil van Dijk.

This will be a tough game for England. When they played last year in Leicester, England won 1-0 but the Swiss created a number of chances.

It was a rather scrappy game but Switzerland are a decent side. They even equipped themselves well against Portugal the other night - it took the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo to beat them.

Switzerland have some very good players.

F: As exciting as last year’s World Cup run was, England do not have any quality creative central midfielders. It’s been the problem for years but Scholes and Carrick were regularly overlooked. Imagine those two in this team now with the forwards we have...

It will be a tough summer for John Stones now. Because after you make a high profile error you just want to go out there and play well.

But he won't be able to do that for a few months. It looks as though Harry Maguire is Gareth Southgate's most trusted central defender now, rather than Stones.

Josh: Controversial opinion - Delph is a quality player, unfortunately Man City is not the team for him as he's not a title winner, but he's just as good if not better than other we've got (Eric Dier to name one). Wish he wouldn't get so much stick, does not deserve it.

Dean: England were so effective in the world Cup playing Lingard and Alli in advanced positions with only one sitting midfielder with their fluidity and interchanging positions. Why the sudden change to play two holding midfielders? City have proven you don't need to play two defensive midfielders in a 4-3-3 to be balanced. And don't get me started on Delph!

Maddison is in the England Under-21 squad

I think James Maddison deserved to be in the England squad on merit. Football is about performing and pecking order but this season Maddison was better than Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli. So for me, Maddison was a glaring omission from the squad.

Harry Winks is another one. He can play that pivot position like Frenkie de Jong did for the Netherlands. At Spurs, Winks is ahead of Eric Dier, so why isn't he for England?

Rob Alderman: This would have been an ideal game to introduce Maddison to the team. Kind of creative midfielder we need to link the play. Dele looks tired and far too inconsistent

If you make bad decisions you get punished, it's as simple as that.

England's game plan didn't work against the Netherlands and that's because the decision making wasn't good enough.

If you want to play out from the back you need midfield players that are comfortable receiving the ball - our three didn't look like that on Thursday. You need footballers in there who are willing to hustle and that's what the Netherlands had.

  19. 'England outclassed against Dutch'published at 13:44 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland v England (14:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

I don't think there was a fault in Gareth Southgate's philosophy against the Netherlands I just think they were outclassed.

England looked very rigid whereas the Dutch looked much more fluid - which is something England may need to do if they are to evolve.

England lost the game because John Stones switched off at a corner for the first goal, then Stones tried to dribble past Memphis Depay for the second - a risk he didn't need to take. And then the last goal was more of a technical error as it was a poor ball from Stones into Ross Barkley.

The frustrating thing for Southgate is that the Dutch were a lot slicker. Declan Rice will have learnt a lot from facing Frenkie de Jong and I'm surprised he's not starting today.
