England manager Gareth Southgate: "There are things we have to do better, and in one or two cases the fuel tank is low so I've had to make changes.

"In all positions on the pitch we have great competition for places, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are pushing hard. They have played well for us in the past.

"John Stones hasn't played a lot of football, so there were mistakes made because of fatigue. And his next game in an England shirt needs to be when he's feeling confident and has some games under his belt. He understands, we are supporting him."

Mark Lynch: As a Spurs fan, why won't Southgate let Harry Kane and Dele Alli have a rest! It's been obvious for months that both need some proper time off!

Sulaimon Adelekan: How does Fabian Delph, Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli get to start for the Three Lions? They are not up to the standards.

The midfield three are certainly Gareth Southgate's problem area, but who else could he be picking in there if all were fit and available?

    Winks? Loftus-Cheek?

Paul Carney: After the euphoria of the World Cup last year the rose-tinted glasses need to come off. England are strong up front but central midfield and central defence are too weak to realistically challenge for big prizes. Pep doesn't trust Stones so why should Gareth?

Steve Crompton: This is a decent England which Southgate has picked. Going to be watching the game whilst overlooking the beach in Kos, Greece.

Will we see some of this?

Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic believes his team will have to be faultless to beat England, regardless of the starting XI Gareth Southgate picks for their third-place game.

"We need to be perfect against opponents like Portugal and England to win these kind of matches," he said.

"It is the players that they (England) have at their disposal. I assume they may also make some changes to their starting line-up tomorrow as they have 23 players that are on an equal level.

"They are quite dangerous in the final third of the pitch, very fast, quite aggressive but they also have moments where they are in trouble and we were able to show that in the friendly match against them last year."

A World Cup trip would always be worth it to some degree Geoff but Steve, that truly was an utter waste of time. Hats off to you.

Steve Dowse: Wimbledon v Beitar Jerusalem in the InterToto Cup. The team was made up of youth players from WFC, Man U and others as nobody wanted anything to do with the competition. Couldn’t even be bothered to play at Selhurst so the game was in Brighton. We were already out. 0-0 obviously.

Geoffrey Jonas: Went to Brazil for the Costa Rica v England match. Set off after we had already been knocked out. 0-0 match as well. Had a great time seeing Brazilian culture etc but it stung going to a dead rubber

Mitch Cruickshank: Back in the 80s, I travelled to Raith Rovers Kirkcaldy to see the second leg of a League Cup game with Aberdeen. Aberdeen had won the first leg 9-0. We won the 2nd leg 3-0 for a 12-0 aggregate. Good day out though.

Mick: I drove four hours from working in Barnsley to Blandford in Dorset for a Dorset FA Cup game, and had to come off after 10 minutes with a broken nose.

  14. Gareth is stayingpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland v England (14:00 BST)

Gareth Southgate says there is "no way" he would return to club management right now, saying he is committed to his role as England manager.

Southgate is also confident assistant Steve Holland will remain in his post despite being linked with Chelsea.

England are nursing their wounds after defeat by the Netherlands in their Nations League semi-final in Portugal.

Southgate is 50-1 with bookmakers to replace manager Maurizio Sarri should he leave Chelsea, but Holland is 9-1.

The bookies' odds come with reports suggesting Holland is being considered for Sarri's role.

Harry Kane is here and he's declared himself fit so it's right that he plays to get some sharpness back.

He's the number one goalscorer in this team so I think it's the right call to play him.

  18. 'Southgate shows ruthless nature'published at 13:11 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland v England (14:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Gareth Southgate said there wouldn't be too many changes but he's showed a ruthless nature to drop John Stones.

Stones has been such a big part of this England team under Southgate but now he may have to fight his way back into the team.

But there are places up for grabs and England need to find some rhythm because they need to finish this season on a high now.

    Switzerland v England (14:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

John Stones had an absolute nightmare against the Dutch but I'm sure he'll get over it. As a player you want to go out and correct what you've done - so I feel a bit sorry for him there - but I think Gareth Southgate had to leave him out after what he did.
