New £80m defender Harry Maguire starts for Manchester United while Aaron Wan-Bissaka also makes his Premier League debut for the Red Devils. Keeper David de Gea captains the side and Daniel James, another summer recruit, is on the bench.

New Chelsea boss Frank Lampard includes Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount in his starting side. Mateo Kovacic, who completed a permanent move from Real Madrid over the summer, also starts while Olivier Giroud is among the substitutes.

Their careers may have overlapped by six years but Frank Lampard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only played against each other six times for Chelsea and Manchester United.

Neatly, the overall score was two wins each and a couple of draws. Lampard won the last - the 2007 FA Cup final - but he also won the first, 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer got his revenge by the same score a few months later.

On new signing Allan Saint-Maximinm who appeared as a second-half substitute: "You don’t know what you were going to get. On his day he’s great and then the week after you’ll want to get him off the pitch. Fans love that here in Newcastle. He didn’t have that much of an impact today and I think he will be a bit hit and miss this season but you can see the fans are going to love him."

Arsenal lost their opening two games of last season - albeit against Manchester City and Chelsea - you will remember.

Arsenal matchwinner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on whether it was a deserved win: "I think so, we fought today a lot. It was a great game against a good team. It was important to start with a win, last season we started bad, so we are happy.

"It is always positive for all the squad to win the first game, everyone is happy to get three points and we're looking forward to winning more games."

On whether he is thinking about the golden boot: "Of course it is in the mind of a striker but first of all the team is the most important. I'm really pleased the goal helped us win the game."
