    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce: "We have had a horrible 20 minutes before half-time and just after half-time where we have made too many mistakes. When you come here the one thing you can't do is gift Manchester United. I know it's Christmas but we gave away more goals in half an hour than we have in three months. It's a harsh lesson for us that you cannot make the mistakes we have just made.

"They have quality at the top end of the pitch but I thought for half an hour we were good. We gifted them a goal to start with. All of a sudden the game is away from you. If you chase it they will rip you to bits. We stuck at it but it was a tough afternoon for us."

  2. 'Great mentality'published at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2019

    FT: Man Utd 4-1 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire told Amazon: "We were in control of the game but they hit us on the counter attack. We gave a sloppy goal away and we were too wide as a back four.

"We will learn form it but we showed great mentality to come back after a poor result last time. We scored four great goals. We know we can score goals. We have to make sure our mentality is right and we are young squad but we have been too inconsistent this season.

"Against Watford we were not good enough for our standard but the boys showed a great intensity today and we thoroughly deserved the three points. We have now got a big game in two days and our story so far has been a good performance and then a not so good one."

What a few days it has been for Liverpool. The newly-crowned club world champions also strengthened their grip on the title race without even playing last weekend following Leicester's defeat to Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp's side also have a game in hand to go with their double-digit lead at the top of the table. Nonetheless, they could hardly have a tougher game to come back to than this one.

Second-placed Leicester are unbeaten at home all season and it took a last-minute penalty from James Milner for Liverpool to beat them 2-1 at Anfield in October.
