    Newcastle 3-0 Rochdale

Rochdale stick to their guns, playing a goal-kick out to a centre-half about six yards out. It almost leads to another Newcastle goal. I can't watch.

    Lucas Boye (42 mins)

First shot on target, first goal. Lucas Boye profits from some poor defending after a cross from the right to stab home from close range.

Middlesbrough have got to engage higher up the pitch. What have they got to lose? They're just inviting Spurs onto them.

    Tottenham 2-0 Middlesbrough

Davinson Sanchez looks like being Middlesbrough's best chance of scoring at the moment. The defender has been a bagful of mistakes so far and he misses his clearing header to momentarily give Ashley Fletcher a free run on goal but the forward cannot control the ball and Spurs sweep up.

Andy Szpuk: If Mourinho wants to endear himself to Spurs fans he could refer to the team as ‘Tottingham’ like Ossie Ardiles used to. Legend.

Mourinho wants to get this game won as soon as possible. Tottenham have got a tough game at Watford at the weekend.

    Shrewsbury 0-0 Bristol City

Taylor Moore is on for the injured Nathan Baker and Shrewsbury almost make the most of the change in defence as Daniel Udoh finds space to get a shot off but his effort is well saved by Daniel Bentley.

It's all down to individual quality and Erik Lamela's definitely got that. He picks up the ball and has one thing on his mind, he's going straight to goal. He's got pace and power, and just slots it in with his left foot.

It's far too easy from a Middlesbrough point of view though.

    Blackpool 0-0 Reading

    Anna Thompson
    BBC Sport at Bloomfield Road

We’re halfway through the first half with no shots to trouble either keeper so far.

Blackpool have had a couple of decent chances with a header from Nathan Delfouneso just over the bar the best effort. Reading have a couple of long-range shots.

    Blackpool 0-0 Reading

If you're wondering why there's been no updates from Bloomfield Road where Blackpool are hosting Reading, the reason is the game has been dreadful.

Half-time is approaching and we're still waiting for our first shot on target.

Decent opening for Joelinton but the Brazilian Shefki Kuqi leans back and blams it miles over the bar.

Blow for Bristol City? Defender Nathan Baker is down by the goalline receiving some treatment. Looks like he may have to go off.

    Erik Lamela (15 mins)

    All over?

Simple stuff for the hosts as Erik Lamela slices through the Middlesbrough defence far too easily before slotting beyond Tomas Mejias' right.

What do Middlesbrough do now? Seems little point in being so cautious now.

Ooh now Middlesbrough almost profit from a defensive error as a poor pass out of defence goes straight to Djed Spence, who then finds Lukas Nmecha inside the box. The Boro striker turns his marker but places his shot too close to Paulo Gazzaniga.

Aaron: The FA and Carabao Cup should be merged into one domestic tournament. Would help with fixture congestion, lower league clubs still have the possibility of a Premier League payday plus an opportunity for Premier League clubs to look at young talent if they choose.

Tottenham are totally dominating possession but Middlesbrough defence is not exposing any gaps. This would have been a good start by the visitors if not for that goal-giving error by keeper Tomas Mejias.
