  1. Good night!published at 19:44 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

England did rather get away with it but they have picked up a win.

See you all tomorrow for even more Nations League action...

  2. "We got away with it"published at 19:39 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland 0-1 England

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Rex Features

England boss Gareth Southgate talking to Sky Sports: "It was a real mixed bag, we started well, we were sharp for 20 minutes. The disallowed offside goal should stand I think and that would have had a big bearing.

"Then for the next period we were good until the final third but lack of match tactics showed in our creative play.

"The sending off was a key moment and it is very difficult to win any game when you are down to 10 men. A lesson we have to learn and it was an unnecessary red card.

"We get the penalty and Raheem's drive and desire was outstanding and then there's another lesson we have to learn. We conceded a penalty, we got away with it and we leave with a win that is really important. A bit flat because it feels we got away with it.

"Kyle Walker realises, as an experienced player, those sort of challenges invite the opportunity for a referee to make that decision.

"We have talked a lot over the years about discipline and the amount of time we have gone out in tournaments when that has been critical - it is not what we want to see again."

  4. 'Grealish will have to take his chance'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Whatever game Jack Grealish plays in, he has to take his chance in that game otherwise he'll fall down the order.

It's all about finding a balance. You can't play the front three today with Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Mason Mount.

You have to get a balance to the side - and it's down to the manager's decision.

  5. "Hopefully I'll be back"published at 19:31 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland 0-1 England

    Kyle WalkerImage source, Getty Images

Kyle Walker talking to Sky Sports: "To get sent off for your country is never a nice moment especially after being out of the team for so long and being on 49 caps.

"I have to take the full blame. To make a rash challenge like that is not acceptable. I don't blame the pressure, I am a seasoned professional and I should know how to manage a game.

"You have to say fair play to the lads for digging in and fighting and getting the win.

"The first couple of games back were always going to be tough. We have a good bond here, a great spirit. Maybe it was why I got the red card, I want to leave everything on the pitch for everyone.

"It is brilliant for English football seeing the youngsters coming through. They are proving it at the big clubs. The world is their oyster. That is the sad thing about being a footballer, it comes to an end sometime and I am probably nearing the end of my international career.

"Hopefully I will be back. I have to talk to the boss and see what he wants to do. I am more than happy to say I want to be around the team. I have missed it."

  6. 'Pre-season friendly'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

There was very little positives for England in this match other than the victory itself but it must also be placed in the context of when this game was being played and its circumstances.

This was almost like a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly in an international guise so it comes as no surprise that England lacked the sort of sharpness and inspiration that would have come with more match practice.

Gareth Southgate will have been delighted to give Phil Foden the first of many England caps while Mason Greenwood will also have enjoyed his taste of international action during his cameo after coming on as a substitute for Harry Kane

I put it to you Peter that if Gareth Southgate wins every major tournament between now and the World Cup of 2038, people would probably tune in.

you can make all the excuses you like but these are footballers whose agents think they deserve a million pound a week. It's all a joke. Southgate could win 10 tournaments on the trot but nobody would be watching that style of football.

    Peter Lyall

What's new? Southgate still clueless. Cost us the World Cup with his Kane obsessed team. Discarded Vardy by exclusion, the most dangerous England striker for years. One look at the team before the match said it all. Average players.

    Phil FodenImage source, Getty Images

Phil Foden talking to Sky Sports: "It feels amazing, a dream come true. A big moment for me and my family.

"It was a very difficult game, we defended well and showed great character. To get that win is massive.

"We all try to play our football. It was frustrating at times but we came through in the end.

"I want to keep playing for my country, not just a one off and hopefully I can keep the shirt."

Raheem Sterling talking to Sky Sports: "It was definitely strange but I'd rather play matches than training. It was tough but we got through it.

"We knew it would be difficult. We knew we had to challenge ourselves deep within. We kept playing our football, kept compact.

"We got the penalty, we shouldn't have conceded that sloppy penalty, but we got lucky in the end.

"We have a bright future ahead and we need to keep growing as a team."

Ben Olive: Pretty awful game, yes. But I think people need to consider the context. No fans, domestic season just about to start, odd preseason preparations, new faces in the line-up... that must make it tricky for the players.

Aaron: It's almost like England needed a player to take on players and drive the ball forward from midfield. A certain someone who's desperate to play for England and watched the game from the bench maybe?

  16. Close-run thing...published at 19:01 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland 0-1 England

Iceland have lost all five of their Nations League games by an aggregate score of 1-14. While all three of England’s victories in the Nations League have been by a different 1-goal margin (3-2 vs Spain, 2-1 vs Croatia, 1-0 vs Iceland).

    Iceland 0-1 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Overall you have to say England, with the possession they had, did not create enough and they did not move the ball quick enough. They were not positive enough.

It's a good three points for England. They look a bit rusty and hopefully they will improve on that performance on Sunday.

You have to say England fell short tonight in terms of breaking Iceland down. Iceland will probably think they deserved a draw and England have to improve. It just wasn't good enough tonight.

Paul: We have won the game in the end just about but make no mistake the win masks how awful we have been. If Southgate says we played well despite having all possession but doing little with it then it will show how deluded he is.

Michael Reid: Just don't get the hype about Joe Gomez. If he was partnered with Lovren all season over VVD nobody would even mention his name.

Thomas Jepps: Lots of negativity towards the England team. Not a great performance but let's support/encourage these young players. Give them a chance to get experience so we are in the best position for the next world cup.
