  2. 'A Championship side'published at 16:07 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

It is, of course, four years since Iceland made England a laughing stock. Here's a reminder of some of our punditry as the sides emerged into that Nice night...

"Let's be realistic, England are playing a Championship side tonight," Chris Waddle said.

"I'll be very, very surprised if England don't win this game 2-0, 3-1," chimed in Danny Mills.

"Iceland have done very well but they have a limited pool of players to pick from. If England don't win this game then it will be a massive embarrassment."

    And oh yes, it was.

This is England's first game with Iceland since the Three Lions suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Euro 2016.

Iceland boss Erik Hamren said his side would need another "unrealistic day" if there was to be a repeat of four years ago.

"In football, not every time you meet is it realistic, Iceland showed that versus England at that time in the Euros," he said.

We think Eric Dier is going to play in defence, don't we?

Not sure if that will make you feel any better Tom. Quite why Trent Alexander-Arnold isn't playing...

Can anyone explain to me why Dier is anywhere near the England set up any more? And it's the most frustrating thing in the world that Southgate feels as though he needs two holding midfielders against Iceland - no ambition, needs to go.

England have scored 46 goals in their past 13 matches (W10 D1 L2) - their 38 goals during 2019 was their most in a year since 1966 (also 38) and bettered in only one previous calendar year, when they netted 39 in 1908.

Jonathan Ridgway: Dier partnering Gomez at the back. Walker or Trippier at left back. Ward-Prowse, Rice & Foden in the middle. Sancho & Sterling on the wings. Kane up top. I hope Ings, Greenwood and Grealish come on at some point.

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

England are playing in their first international since November 2019 and there are eight changes from the starting XI that beat Kosovo 4-0 last time out.

Manchester City starlet Phil Foden is given a Three Lions debut, while captain Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Declan Rice are the only survivors from that game in Pristina.

Jordan Pickford replaces Nick Pope in goal and there are starts for Kyle Walker, Joe Gomez, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier, James Ward-Prowse and Manchester United linked Jadon Sancho.

Harry Maguire misses out following his court case in Greece, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyrone Mings, Ben Chilwell, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Harry Winks and Callum Hudson-Odoi all making way.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Gomez, Dier, Trippier, Ward-Prowse, Rice, Foden, Sterling, Sancho, Kane.

  11. Trippier at left-back?published at 15:43 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

Gareth Southgate didn't have a left-back in his squad so it was always going to be an interesting selection. Is Kieran Trippier the man asked to fill in?

Looks like Eric Dier is playing in defence too - could even be a back three. We shall see.

Jadon Sancho wearing nine?! Nope. But good to see a debut for Phil Foden.

It's four years since Iceland dished out one of the most humiliating nights in England's footballing history.

A win in the Nations League won't erase those memories but it's a start.

Can Gareth Southgate and co get three points under the belt in Reykjavik?
