Sighs of relief here as my match feed finally kicks in. Some lovely scenic shots of the Icelandic landscape - what a place. I've been once and keen to get back. At some point.

  2. 'Show them what you can do'published at 16:43 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Sky Sports: "I have told them to go out and show people what they can do, they have waited long enough to play and are eager to play. We have a stubborn opponent in front of us and we have to be patient and counter the threats they have. I have told them to enjoy their football and show people what they have been missing.

"Phil Foden has done all the things we knew he can, we know how much quality he has and he has fitted straight in. The young players know how we work, how we play and we have not told him to do anything different.

"We need a solid base with experience in the team, we have a lot of young players. Kyle Walker, Kieran Tripper and Eric Dier have a lot of experience and it will be interesting to see how Eric develops in defence.

"The style Iceland play, they will always create the odd chance. They are strong on set plays we have to show our quality to break them down and choose the right options."

Nick in Watford (16:15) TAA isn't the best right back in the world, he's the best right wing back in the world. Having Virgil at the back for Liverpool allows him to play a wing back role from a back 4. If Trent played how he does for Liverpool in an England shirt, we'd leak goals like a sieve. If Southgate goes back to a back 3, he'd be nailed on to play.

  4. 'Hopefully Foden can take his opportunity'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

What we've seen of Phil Foden so far, he looks a player. He's great on the ball, he can beat a player and he can score a goal.

If the European Championship had gone ahead he probably wouldn't have been in the squad - now he is and hopefully he can grab his opportunity.

He certainly has the talent to play for England.

Paul Anderton: I was on holiday (ah, memories) in Hong Kong for the England v Iceland game. Woke up at 3am to watch, wish I'd slept through.

Nick in Watford [16:15] obviously hasn't watched much spurs games if he thinks Eric Dier has been average! He's had a real rebirth under mourinho and was easily our most dependable defensive player since the managerial change; more than deserving of a chance to show the world there's still a quality player there with a big future for club and country

Trent Alexander-Arnold must not be fully fit - right? I'm sure we'll hear from Gareth Southgate before kick-off and we'll try and clear that up.

One of the first names on the sheet. Should be anyway.

  15. Foden here to stay?published at 16:17 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

    Iceland v England (17:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Phil Foden's elevation to England's full squad has been an inevitability since he started making his way through the junior ranks, particularly when he was named player of the tournament when they won the Under-17 World Cup three years ago.

The 20-year-old showed glimpses of his brilliance for Manchester City last season as he prepared to fill the vacancy left by David Silva. Barring unforeseen circumstances, he will be an England regular for years to come.

England striker Harry Kane has been directly involved in 16 goals in his last six matches for the Three Lions (10 goals, six assists). He has found the net in all six games and would be the third player to score in seven consecutive games for England after George Camsell (9, 1929-36) and Steve Bloomer (10, 1895-99).

Southgate picking his defence based on reputation rather than form. Pickford had an awful season. Both Pope and Henderson were vastly superior. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the best right back in world football at the moment, yet Southgate won't give him a game. Trippier is a right back, but Southgate would rather play him out of position than play an actual left-back. This seemingly makes TAA 3rd choice at right back? Coady had a great season, yet Dier gets the nod following his average year of performances for Spurs. It's more fun watching the U21s at the moment. They seem to be picked based on their form rather than how big a name they are.

The Nations League is separated into four divisions. The top three divisions have four groups with four teams. Each side plays the other teams in their group home and away - just like a Champions League group.

The bottom division has one group of four and one of three.

The team to win each group in League A - England won theirs last time - will go into the finals tournament in September or October 2021 (it was initially meant to be in June).

Teams that top their their group in Leagues B, C or D will be promoted. Sides finishing bottom of their group in Leagues A and B are relegated, with a play-off to decide who goes down from League C.

The best two Nations League group winners who do not reach the World Cup or play-offs through normal qualifying - which starts in March 2021 - will go into the 12-team World Cup European play-offs in March 2022 (with three qualifying for the tournament in Qatar).

    Read all about it here.
