    ... as Manchester United progressed...

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BT Sport: "It feels good to be in the final. We played one very, very good half at Old Trafford which has taken us through. It could easily have been 8-6 to them. It was a strange game. We kept giving them the ball but luckily we have one of the the best keepers in the world. We are in the final and are looking forward to 26 May."

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to BT Sport: "It's a great achievement to get to the final. We started the game a bit edgy. It was end to end like basketball and we gave them too many chances in second half. Now we've got to go to the final and win it.

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to BT Sport: "There was a five minute spell where Roma could really have got into it. It was a bit dicey and I'm not sure Ole will be thrilled with that second half performance but in the end it's job done."

    ... and Arsenal went out...

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BT Sport: "We are devastated. Really disappointed. We have to congratulate Villarreal. We tried everything until the last minute. I think we deserved to win the game but the details define these ties. The only way [to qualify for Europe] is through the Premier League so we know what we have ahead of us. Today is a big disappointment because we tried everything."

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown to BT Sport on Mikel Arteta's future: "You have to be a quick learner as a manager. I'm not saying he isn't going to be manager of the club, that's a decision that will be made through the summer. It will have to be an incredible start to next season if he is to stay in the job. He's under huge pressure now. Big decisions to be made at the football club all-round at the moment."

Former Arsenal player and manager Freddie Ljungberg to BT Sport: "I hope that this is the rock bottom and it can change from here. It really, really hurts but I think there needs to be a change in how they invest into the club, and change the pattern that we get worse and worse every year."

  3. 'I'm very proud'published at 22:51 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Villarreal manager Unai Emery speaking to BT Sport: "Good evening. Yes I'm very proud because we know it is very important for us and Arsenal are a very good team. I think we deserved it.

"Today we worked very well, defended very well and sometimes with the possession we controlled the match and had some options in attack to score goals. They had the best chances to score.

"Today we are thinking to enjoy this moment and then we prepare the match against Manchester United. We deserve to play this final and we will show our best performance and show we want to fight against Manchester for this title."

  4. Villarreal's first major European finalpublished at 22:46 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Villarreal have reached the final of a major European competition for the very first time.

They had been eliminated from each of their previous four semi-finals.

But manager and Europa League mastermind Unai Emery has reached the final of the competition on more occasions than any other manager - in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2018-19 and 2020-21.

The Spaniard has won the competition on three of the previous four occasions he has reached the final...

  5. 'Hopefully this is rock-bottom'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Former Arsenal player and manager Freddie Ljungberg to BT Sport: "I hope that this is the rock bottom and it can change from here. But it needs investment to ensure that.

"It really, really hurts but I think there needs to be a change in how they invest into the club, and change the pattern that we get worse and worse every year."

  6. 'We must show we love this club in our remaining games'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno to BT Sport: "I think that the problem was that we didn't take our chances. Overall we were the better side. In the first half in Villarreal we were not on our level and that is what beat us.

"In the first half of the first leg we were not at our best but in that second half and today we put everything in. But it was not enough, not good enough.

"A semi-final experience is very important but this is no excuse. We had enough chances to go through. We needed just one goal. It's too easy to say it's just experience.

"It's very hard for all of us. Also for the fans. We are all sad. Hopefully we can make next season better than this season but this season isn't over and in our final four games we must fight for this club and show that we love this club."

  7. 'Big decisions to be made at Arsenal'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BT Sport: "That decision [on Mikel Arteta's future] needs to be made. He's a young manager. It's not a given that you will be successful even if you come with a big repuation.

"You have to be a quick learner as a manager. I'm not saying he isn't going to be manager of the club, that's a decision that will be made through the summer.

"It will have to be an incredible start to next season if he is to stay in the job. He's under huge pressure now.

"Is there an appetite to keep him? We will have to see what happens but these performances can't continue. Big decisions to be made at the football club all-round at the moment."

  8. 'Luckily we have one of best keepers in world'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Roma 3-2 Man Utd (Agg: 5-8)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BT Sport: "It feels good to be in the final. We played one very, very v good half at Old Trafford which has taken us through. I'm disappointed we lost - especially the way we played in the second half.

"It could easily have been 8-6 to them. It was a strange game. We kept giving them the ball but luckily we have one of the the best keepers in the world. We are in the final and are looking forward to 26 May."

On United's punishing schedule over the next few days: "It's unheard of. It's made by people who have never played football at this level. It's physically impossible for the players. We have not been dealt a good hand. We are going to need everyone for these four games. It's a short turnaround but we have to be ready."

Come back Arsene all is forgiven.

    Stuart, York

Arteta has to go, 0-0 should never be an acceptable scoreline in a must win European semi final where Arsenal only had to score. At least lose having committed all 11 players forward chasing it. Arteta has transformed Arsenal, for the worst

  10. 'Arsenal going in the wrong direction'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

    Matt Upson
Former England and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We can talk about being Mikel Arteta being outsmarted by Unai Emery but I don't think Villarreal had to do a lot and this is the problem, they sat in, defended well and did the basics well. Arsenal never changed gear, they weren't able to lift their level for this game. It was a typical Arsenal performance at the moment.

The manager has a good idea of how he wants to coach and how he wants to play but none of that matters if you don't have the application, the characters, the commitment and responsibility on the pitch. It's not easy to create that - a lot is recruitment but a lot is being able to tap into people and get a reaction out of players. It appears to be going in the wrong direction for Mikel Arteta.

  11. 'We are devastated'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BT Sport: "We are devastated. Really disappointed. We have to congratulate Villarreal. We tried everything until the last minute. I think we deserved to win the game but the details define these ties.

"We had three big chances, they didn't have anything but they are through. So many things happened to us, and so many players were just trying to compete not at their best."

On losing Granit Xhaka in the warm up: "It changed our plan completely. We prepared everything with Granit in that position. In the first half we struggled with the ball but it's not an excuse. Too many important players had to define the game but not in their right moments.

"I think we were very imprecise with the ball. We were probably a bit tense. We were much more dominant in the second half."

On why they lost: "It's various things. The way we started in Villarreal wasn't good enough. We didn't arrive here in the best moment with everyone in their best condition. For 90% of them it was their first semi-final and we have to learn."

"The only way [to qualify for Europe] is through the Premier League so we know what we have ahead of us. Today is a big disappointment because we tried everything."

  12. 'Arsenal didn't have the right balance'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

More from ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BT Sport: "We thought we were signing the next Patrick Viera [in Thomas Partey] but he hasn't looked like that at all.

"We made a mistake, we shoud have had two midfield players side by side. We didn't have the right balance in that midfield.

"Odegaard didn't seem to want to go and press and in midifeld Villarreal were just able to pass by."

  13. Postpublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Roma 3-2 Man Utd (Agg: 5-8)

Manchester United v Roma produced a total of 13 goals over the two legs.

That's the biggest tally in a Uefa Cup or Europa League semi-final, and joint-second highest across two legs of any major European semi-final, behind Eintracht Frankfurt 12-4 Rangers in the 1959-60 European Cup.

DanDoesStuff: I wonder at what point the sharks start circling Arsenal. No European football, no champions league revenue... could players like Saka get cherry picked by the bigger teams.

Craig Smith: Concern for Arsenal is where do we go from here? Do we trust Arteta to start from scratch and rebuild? Ask someone else? and with what money (and no European football to attract talent)? We look years away from Champions League football.

Giles Brooks: mind you arsenal not having European football for the first time in a quarter of a century might have silver lining: without the income to siphon off perhaps kroenke will finally sell up?

  15. 'It was like basketball'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Roma 3-2 Man Utd (Agg: 5-8)

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, speaking to BT Sport: "It's a great achievement to get to the final. We didn't win the game and that's disappointing but we did the hard work in the first leg.

"We started the game a bit edgy. It was end to end like basketball and we gave them too many chances in second half.

"Now we've got to go to the final and win it. Edinson scored two great goals and his movement and work rate without the ball is excellent.

"His second goal is typical of him and what he has done throughout his career."

Arteta must go tonight. Disgraceful to bring off aubameyang and Tierney when we need a goal. We're finishing 10th or 11th, largely due to his obsession with the worst players in our squad.

    Jay, London

It's looking like the shortcomings in Arsenal's squad are going to cost them dearly. Investment needed big time.

  17. 'A bit of an embarrassment'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown speaking on BT Sport: "It's a huge job at this football club. His [Mikel Arteta's] inexperience has perhaps cost him. He's still manager, but it felt this was the rescue package and his players didn't turn up.

"He [Arteta] was outsmarted by the previous manager [Unai Emery] which is a bit of an embarrasment.

"We looked lost. We couldn't get out and they made us nervy. We haven't really laid a glove on them and we haven't gone down fighting.

"They seemed almost prepared to let the game flow away and I think that does come from the manager."

  18. 'Gone out with a whimper'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

    Lee Dixon
Former Arsenal and England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

As an Arsenal fan you hope the season would change tonight and they'd put a performance in they can be proud of but in the back of your mind you think about performances that have gone before and you think, 'I don't trust this team'. You think well they can't play as bad as they did in the first leg, well they've outdone themselves, because they did. They've gone out with a whimper tonight.

Every one of those players should look at their performance and ask themselves whether they did enough, and if they're honest with themselves the answer will be no. I hope they're in that changing room hurting, but I'm not sure if they are.

  19. Postpublished at 22:07 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Villarreal (Agg: 1-2)

Is Mikel Arteta still the man for the job, Arsenal fans?

It looks likely the Gunners will be without European football in any form next season.

This defeat will hurt. We'll bring you all the reaction as we get it.

  20. 'Job done'published at 22:05 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

FT: Roma 3-2 Man Utd (Agg: 5-8)

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, speaking to BT Sport: "There was a five minute spell where Roma could really have got into it. It was a bit dicey and I'm not sure Ole will be thrilled with that second half performance but in the end it's job done."
