  1. 'Gunners must think big'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

    Arsenal v Villarreal (Agg: 1-2, 20:00 BST)

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown speaking on BT Sport: "Hopefully Arsenal can go and win it [the Europa League]. You've got to think big.

"I don't think it's that great an opponent. It's up to Arsenal and how they play this match. A good start to the game is really important."

  3. Van de Beek's big chancepublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

Roma v Man Utd (Agg: 2-6, 20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Donny van de Beek has managed 65 minutes in a total of five substitute appearances for Manchester United since his last start, in the FA Cup defeat by Leicester on 21 March. Forty-five of those minutes came in one game, against Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals.

The last match Van de Beek started that United won was also in the FA Cup, against West Ham, in February.

This would be a good stage to make a big impression.

    Guillem Balague

Unai Emery is an experienced manager trying to do the best with what he has got. He lost a couple of players at the start of the season through injury and he's trying to impose a way of playing which hasn't always worked.

Villarreal are almost there in what they asked Emery to do. They want to qualify for Europe regularly and, this season, it is not yet guaranteed through the league.

I agree that UEFA should certainly consider switching the games to Wembley should both finals be all English - would be great if fans can go to both matches! If nothing it reduces the logistical headaches!

  6. 'Obsessed with winning Euro final'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

    Arsenal v Villarreal (Agg: 1-2, 20:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

Villarreal is a wonderful story. About 18 or 19 years ago they were about to go down to the third-tier when they were rescued. They were in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2006 when they lost to Arsenal.

They haven't made a big European final yet and they say it's not an obsession of the club to get to one.

But I can tell you it absolutely is. They want to confirm they can go that extra mile and get a place in history.

  7. 'This tie is not done'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

Roma v Man Utd (Agg: 2-6, 20:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lost in four semi-finals as Manchester United boss but, barring a huge collapse in the second leg, will be taking his side to the final against either Arsenal or Spanish side Villarreal.

"As a team we need to develop and improve, so we're going to play to win the game," said Solskjaer.

"There might be one or two changes to the selection, but it's not done - Roma have been part of upsets before and we want to get to the final."

A reminder to all that we’re about to have a European Championship spread across multiple countries. If the finals were moved for the European cups it would be an admission by Uefa that the Euros shouldn’t be played as they currently are either. It would also set a precedent for future cups. Imagine the all-German CL final held at Wembley a few years back being moved to Germany, there would have been uproar!

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he lost four kilos in weight and was "really, really down" after contracting malaria while on international duty with Gabon in March.

Aubameyang, 31, made his return as a substitute in the Europa League semi-final first-leg defeat by Villarreal last week.

"This was the worst moment of being sick in my life because it was really hard," he said.

"I was feeling very, very bad."

Surely, in the interests of our country's health and how far we have come, the UCL final should be played in the UK. We can't ban away fans from the last two games of the Premier League but then condone 8,000 fans having to travel to Turkey.

    Carol Frain

Should switch the finals but they won't. Whatever Uefa and Fifa say, it's not about the fans, it's about the money.

Despite Unai Emery lifting the Europa League three consecutive times with Sevilla, the Spanish boss feels Villarreal are underdogs to reach the final.

"Arsenal started as favourites and they are still favourites at this stage," said the ex-Gunners boss.

"We will try to compete against this kind of team - those favourite teams - but the first-leg result is really narrow to make anything change."

Surely if Uefa are correct in their recent claims that ‘football is for the fans’ etc, then the finals will be moved to Wembley (or Villa Park) this season to enable the most fans to attend?

There isn't an awful lot of talk in Spain about what Mikel Arteta is doing at Arsenal because they look at the table and see other teams who are more interesting.

It is still not Mikel Arteta's side and the time to judge him is probably in a year's time. He's still trying to find himself.

As a Manchester United fan, I'm really happy for both Manchester City and Chelsea. Regardless of who they are, I always want British teams to do well in Europe. Let's hope that there isn't a major collapse by United this evening and Arsenal pull it out of the bag so we get a Premier League lock out of the European competitions.

    Arsenal v Villarreal (Agg: 1-2, 20:00 BST)

    Matt Upson
Former England and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The attacking power, the tried and tested players, especially Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being back in the team - that's a good thing providing he's in the form we know he can be in.

I like a back three though with Arsenal, they haven't got a centre-back partnership that stands out enough and says 'select me' so to play a back four with Thomas Partey sitting in front is interesting - they need the goals. They haven't been that good defensively at home so this will definitely be interesting.

  17. 'No-one expected this'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

Roma v Man Utd (Agg: 2-6, 20:00 BST)

    Daniele Verri, Italian football journalist

Roma's sporting director Tiago Pinto was at the heart of the pursuit of Jose Mourinho. He got in touch with the former Tottenham manager after his recent dismissal, made Paulo Fonseca aware of negotiations and convinced the ownership to proceed with speed and silence.

The news is a huge boost for Roma the club and Rome the city, following the misery that descended after the astonishing 6-2 defeat by Manchester United.

That result was the latest blow to a proud club.

A sequence of injuries and bad results saw the Giallorossi drop from third to seventh in the league and suffer the embarrassment of defeat in the Coppa Italia at the hands of minnows Spezia.

Something big was needed, but no-one expected this.

Since their second-half capitulation at Old Trafford last week, Roma have announced Jose Mourinho is taking over from the start of 2021-22.

As he'll no doubt be reminding people, Manchester United have won nothing since he was sacked in December 2018.

  19. 'Man Utd trophy would show progress'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes says winning a trophy would show the progress the club were making.

Fernandes, 26, has not played in a final with United since joining them in January 2020.

Jose Mourinho was in charge when United won their last major trophy - the Europa League in 2017.

"For us, it is a sign of improvement, because last season we didn't win anything," said Fernandes.

"It's still not enough for us but it is something growing up from the club and the players and a sign we're doing a little bit better. We will improve."

  20. Euro headache for Southgate?published at 19:09 British Summer Time 6 May 2021

The success of English clubs in Europe could prove to be problematic for England manager Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 plans.

There is the distinct possibility he could be without at least 11 regulars for his first warm-up match should Manchester United reach the Europa League final just days before Chelsea meet Manchester City in the Champions League final.

Players competing in the two European finals will not feature in the England game against Austria at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough on 2 June.

It means internationals such as Mount, Chilwell, James, Sterling, Walker, Stones, Foden, Rashford, Shaw, Maguire and Henderson would all be unavailable, if selected when Southgate names his 26 man squad later this month.

England play Romania on 6 June when those players would be expected to feature.
