  2. 'We gave the ball away too often'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager speaking to Sky Sports: "The best team won. We didn't get anywhere near where we were five days ago. We didn't look after the ball well enough and we gifted them two goals. We didn't do enough to win the game. We didn't handle the full press and it was a difficult night.

"The one thing you can't do at this level is give them the goals we did. We gave the ball away far too often. We knew what to expect from them - the full press - and unfortunately we couldn't play through it.

"The first 15 minutes was probably our worst spell after half-time. We couldn't get out. We kept giving the ball back to them and when you're in that situation it becomes difficult for. Congrtulations to Southampton on the night. They were far better than us and we couldn't cope with them.

"We go up and down too quick. That's one thing we have to resolve. We go along nicely then all of a sudden we don't play well enough in the game. It nags me."

Matt: This time last year Saints were 18th on 8 points, with -18 goal difference! Roll forward a year and we 8 points better off, in 3 less games....and we are top of the league! So proud!

  4. 'That inconsistency is what nags at me'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a difficult evening for us against a very good Southampton team but we didn't do enough. We weren't aggressive enough and we found it very difficult. The goals we gave away probably summed up our evening. We gave it away far too cheaply and far too often.

"To do it you have to be good with the ball and make sure you look after it better than we did. That's why the players play at this level because they are expected to.

"From six minutes in we gifted them the first goal then it was a difficult night all round. We were nowhere near where we were five days ago. That's my biggest issue - that we go up and down. It was a poor, poor performance.

"We were a shadow of the team I saw against Everton. We have to make sure we're better against Chelsea. There's a few shirts available, a few place up for grabs. We had to play it forward quickly and off the front but we just couldn't do it. It was a really difficult evening. We were beaten by the better team.

"There's always going to be a reaction but that reaction is too often. That inconsistency is what nags at me.

  5. 'Everything is possible'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to Match of the Day: "It was a very good performance again. We showed that we are one step further in our development now.

"Our fans will love it and they’ll make a picture of the table. For us it’s nice but it shouldn’t’ kill the hunger for more. We should stay hungry and we should feel anything is possible with this team.

"I must be very proud. We developed not with a lot of invested money but with a lot of invested work. We had some good results in the past two or three months and it was important everyone can see the philosophy we are following can be successful."

  6. 'It's an absolute honour'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton's Theo Walcott speaking to Sky Sports: "You can see on my face that I'm smiling, you know. It's a fantastic team at this moment in time.

"It's an absolute honour to be honest. Sadly there's no fans here today but we showed that we work hard for each other and there's so much trust. The work is showing. We are there with our performances it shows.

"We have being doing it from day one. It's the team we are. We hunt in packs and we work together. We like to counter-press and we did well. He [Che Adams] took the goal very well. I always worry when it's 1-0 though. We dominated the game but it shows the character we have got in the team.

"We have some leaders in that dressing room as well. I will be contributing a lot on the assists front. As long as the team keeps on winning, I'm sure I'll get my goal soon. It's nice to get the three points for the team.

On the penalty appeal: "No. I spoke to him afterwards. He has to go in and I had to go in. I felt it, trust me! Just like my wrist, I am a bruised man right now! But I got back up and it was the right decision, yes."

"I've enjoyed every minute since I've been here, no matter where I'm playing. Obviously Danny Ings is a massive miss. It will be nice to have him back soon. But I do enjoy playing up front. It's natural to me in any of those frontline positions.

"I've got some great memories here but I want to make some new ones. I feel like a kid again. I just want to express myself. The manager has faith in me and the team. I think it showed on the field."

  7. 'A little scary what we are doing'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to Sky Sports: "It's amazing what my team does in the moment. Congratulations to everybody around the pitch and the team. Amazing. We could maybe have scored more but the rest was perfect. Everybody was on the highest level. It is a little scary what we are doing at the moment to be honest but not surprising when I see what we are working on.

"Earlier, we could have closed the game, earlier. That was definitely possible. The way we played through lines was fantastic to watch. We can then make the last pass and final decision even better but this is criticism on a high level. We know it's not so easy to create a lot of chances against these teams.

"Theo [Walcott] gives us the runs and Che [Adams] is brilliant in the box. It was important to show that also without Danny [Ings] we have the quality to score."

[On Walcott's performance] "Very good especially when he can turn in the red zone and go with the ball. His finish was not perfect but his workload that he invests for us is amazing.

"There were a few critical situations I think. I have not seen it yet [Walcott's penalty shout] but in the end it was not deciding the game. We try to win it without needing a penalty or something like that.

"I just told the guys in the dressing room that we invested so much in this time together. We made so many big steps forward. We are now a strong side. That is not a coincedence. It helped us that we had situations where there were no crowds as we developed our game without as much stress. It was the complete game I think."

  9. 'We need more consistency'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow speaking to Sky Sports: "We didn't start as well as we had hoped. We didn't press or get after them as much as we needed to. We were playing catch up towards the end and conceded the second.

"We need to be better than that. We know we need to. We go from beating Everton to that so it's not acceptable."

What is going wrong? "We don't know. I can't put my finger on it. It's something we need to work on and go back to the training ground. We didn't start well enough and just couldn't get going all night it seemed unfortunately."

On the first goal: "I didn't see it. He's hit it that well. It had good pace on it. That's the honest review on it from my point of view. I just couldn't react quickly enough."

Two steps forward, one step back? "It seems to be the case so far this season. We seem to win one and draw one. We need more consistency about our game. The points are still on the board and we need to come back and give more than we did next time."

  12. 'Southampton were tactically superior'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Southampton were brilliant from the get go - Che Adams was excellent, the finish, the confidence. Tactically they were superior. They were physical, they bullied Newcastle at times. They moved the ball quicker, better in possession, overall just a lot better. They won all their individual battles, Newcastle were really poor, they gifted Southampton with all of their opportunities jut because they were so poor.

10 goals in 8 games for Newcastle despite a decent forward line. Bruce needs to address this as a priority.

    What a chance!

  20. 'Newcastle are their own undoing'published at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's come from a long direct ball - they just win it Southampton. Theo Walcott driving at them and then this is where the mistake comes from, Newcastle lose the ball on the edge of the 18-yard-box, Sean Longstaff can not give the ball away there, he takes too many touches. He's dispossessed by Stuart Armstrong, left foot, straight into the bottom corner. That is your own undoing Newcastle.
