Stuart Armstrong slides it in from the right and Che Adams is allowed to turn and shoot. It's straight at Karl Darlow.

  2. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Newcastle

Che Adams looks well up for this. It's pinged through to him in the box and he's falling as he tries to control the ball under pressure from Jamaal Lascelles.

Solid defending in the end. Adams gives a thumbs up. Just keep feeding him the ball!

Unbelievable finish from Che Adams - the power and the accuracy. Karl Darlow made a great save in the initial build-up but the second time he wasn't going to miss. It's a bad defensive mistake. Darlow had no chance - what a finish.

    Criminal from Miguel Almiron.

GOAL - Southampton 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 7 mins

    Che Adams

    What is Miguel Almiron doing?

He's dancing around with it just outside his own area, twisting into trouble and not clearing his lines. He just needs to hoof it!

Theo Walcott eventually nicks it off him and tees up Che Adams, who had just been denied by Karl Darlow, and he thumps it into the net on the volley.

    Some finish!

It's good pressing from Theo Walcott, who hurries Jamaal Lascelles with his clearance. It comes to Che Adams in the middle and he forces a smart save from Karl Darlow.

Jamaal Lascelles goes long to Jacob Murphy but Jack Stephens gets his head on it. Both teams just feeling their way into it.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Southampton are a good team - aggressive, front-footed. Ralph Hassenhuttl has gone back to his philosophy. Yes, at times they've been done for having a high line, but that's how he wants to play. If Southampton went top that would be massive - it's points on the board, it shows where you want to be. Everyone wants to be top of the table.

  9. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

James Ward-Prowse loops it over to Che Adams on the right but it's dealt with comfortably.

Kyle Walker-Peters is getting in a few early touches.

Off we go at St Mary's. It surely can't be worse than the earlier game?

Very true! A big leap up from 11th to 4th if Newcastle win.

You might also point out that Newcastle would go 4th with a win. Bearing in mind that we're not very good, that is bizarre.

Here come the players. The two captains will lay a wreath to honour remembrance day before we get under way.

I've refuelled with a brew and some biscuits so we're all ready to go.

  17. 'A lot less effective without Ings'published at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

One player does not make a team, but everything Saints do really does revolve around Danny Ings.

I don't think their manager, Ralph Hassenhuttl, will change his system on Friday but it will be a lot less effective without Ings because he sniffs goals out for fun.

I don't see Newcastle creating much at St Mary's, but Steve Bruce will set them up to make things difficult for Southampton and, in Callum Wilson, the Magpies have their own in-form striker who can nick them a goal.

  18. 'A goal was the only thing missing'published at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2020

    FT: Brighton 0-0 Burnley

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter to BBC Sport: "You’ve got to score. That was the only thing missing from our performance. We restricted Burnley to pretty much nothing. We had chances.

"Performance-wise, I’m really happy. We’re always looking to improve. It’s disappointing to only get one point.

"The fact Danny Welbeck gets in there [to have chances] is really positive. It was a really good impact and good performance. He’ll get better and better the longer he’s with us.

"The team gave everything. We were playing a dangerous opponent but we had a good control of things. We tried our best to score.

"“Possession itself is not that important, it’s what you do with it. You’re not going to get too many chances at this level. We had enough to score."
