    Brighton 0-1 Liverpool

The ex-Reds man, Adam Lallana is on for Brighton, replacing Aaron Connolly. He'll know as well as anyone how to try and get the better of this Liverpool side.

The Reds also make a change, with Sadio Mane replacing a very unhappy Mohamed Salah. Doesn't even look at Jurgen Klopp as he passes him on the touchline.

    Brighton 0-1 Liverpool

Is this a Brighton penalty? No. It's offside.

Trossard is flagged off, meaning his cross, which clearly hits Fabinho's arm in the box, is redundant.

  3. goal

GOAL - Brighton 0-1 Liverpoolpublished at 60 mins

    Diogo Jota

It's him again! And it is absolutely brilliant.

Just when the game needed a lift and a bit of quality, up steps the man of the moment. Mohamed Salah finds Diogo Jota in the box and he cuts inside one man, past another and then finds the bottom corner with a low shot.

Eight Liverpool starts for the forward, now nine goals. Can't remember the last player who hit the ground running quite so efficiently for a new club?

Ambitious. Solly March is found wide left but wastes his opportunity, firing way over the bar. I think it was a shot. Could have been a cross. Either way, it was poor.

It's all a bit tame in general right now.

Klopp took my advice: Liverpool need more defensive cover. Bring Henderson on in midfield and switch Milner to replace Williams.

    Tim, North Wales

All players should be bald and no facial hair, no chance of being a whisker offside then.

    Chris, Horsham

People keep talking about how much Liverpool will miss Virgil Van Dijk but, since he's not been in the side, we haven't conceded seven goals in a game once.

I look forward to a day when we're not all discussing a VAR decision during a game. Danny Welbeck tries to give us something else to focus on with a weaving run and shot, but Alisson is there to save.

Good effort, though, Danny. Much appreciated.

Steve in Milan: VAR is doing away with the need for linos and maybe refs, if their decisions are never going to be respected.

Richard: There is no acceptable limit for offside. It's black and white. Off or on. I'll never understand these people who say "but if it's really close, just let them have it". That's not the rule.

SS345: Funny how much Prem fans seem to hate VAR. I was screaming for it yesterday after Ivan Toney had a goal disallowed for offside when he was on. Because it's the Championship, there was no VAR and we didn't get the goal. There's always going to be a problem I guess.

Liverpool with some early pressure in the second half, much like in the first. They are patient in and around the Brighton box before Jota is found for a turn and first-time shot that flashes across goal.

Connolly is proving a real menace to Phillips at the back, playing on his shoulder, always looking to dart in behind. He almost does just that, but the Reds defender recovers to poke the ball away from him.

Joe Baker: For the 10,000th time - it's not VAR technology that is the issue, it's the ridiculous way it's being applied. According to current (ridiculous) offside rules, #Salah, external was off. Keep the technology, changes the rules. Simple.

A: We should take a leaf out of cricket's book. If the offside decision is within a certain range, go with the linesman's call. The images we are using for the calls are blurry how can they accurately reflect the actual positions of players

Paul Collins: The big question here is are all the people criticising VAR today also doing so when these VAR decisions also go in favour of their team? Bet most aren't because football fans are the biggest hypocrites in sport.

Here's a niche stat. Neal Maupay is the first player to start a Premier League game, miss a penalty, and be subbed off before half-time since Dennis Bergkamp against Derby in April 1998.

Mubarak A: Liverpool players should be playing with their skeletons only. They should leave their toe nails and armpit hairs at home to avoid mm offside calls.

Steve in Milan: Hate Liverpool but hate VAR even more. It's not football anymore.

Alex Coe: I think people would be far more accepting of VAR if 'clear and obvious' was used for offsides too. Decision made by linesman on pitch, then ask VAR: 'is it a clear and obvious error?' If you need to draw a load of lines to decide then no it's not.

VAR has now conditioned us to no longer celebrate when a goal is scored. Sad really.

    Chris, Orpington

VAR is the WORST thing to ever happen to football. How was it offside? Oh I know....it wasn't!

    Brathers

I don't care if we have four spaniels in defence, 0 shots on target against Brighton is abysmal.

VAR. The player that killed football.

    David Ashworth

If anyone assumed from watching this game that it was either side who were champions they would certainly have doubts about the quality of the rest of the league

    Dave, Dunblane

Last night one of the greatest finishes in Rugby League history happened with a potential offside. Did the video referee use lines? No. And was there a big controversy with it being so tight? No. Get rid of the lines, they don't help accuracy.

No goals, but there has been plenty going on. A penalty miss by a player who then went off injured and a goal ruled out by the finest of margins by VAR.

Worth sticking around for the second half, if you ask me.
