An out-of-favour winger, an out-of-contract back-up goalkeeper and a promising teenager who has never started a senior league match account for three of just four permanent signings made by Premier League clubs so far in January.

For all the noise around the mid-season transfer window, Aston Villa's signing of Morgan Sanson from Marseille on Tuesday was the first example of a top-flight club bringing in a first-team regular this month.

So why has so little been happening? Found out in this interesting and insightful piece by Harry De Cosemo.

  3. Fabinho Liverpool's latest casualtypublished at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2021

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The absence of Fabinho with what is described as a "minor muscle issue" is the latest drain on Liverpool's defensive resources.

He has been manning the defensive barricades with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out injured, moving from his usual role as the midfield anchor and doing an outstanding job.

In their current circumstances, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will hope his minor muscle issue is exactly that. All this and Kane and Son too.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is always very, erm, animated on the touchline.

The German's behaviour annoyed Spurs counterpart Jose Mourinho when the sides met in December, with the Portuguese suggesting after the match if he behaved the same way he would find himself in disciplinary bother.

And Mourinho isn't letting this one lie...

"When I didn't behave well I paid the price. And I paid the price in two ways: one was to see matches on TV in the dressing room and another price was big-money fines," he said in his pre-match news conference.

"I feel that, for some of the other guys, it doesn't happen the same. It doesn't happen the same with them.

"But, if the referee and the fourth official are there to do that job, I just hope they do that job and act the way they have to act."

Mourinho didn't refer to Klopp specifically. But he didn't have to...

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Liverpool's poor recent form should provide Tottenham with the confidence that they can earn a rare win over the Reds tonight, says former Spurs striker Clive Allen.

"We all knew the problems Liverpool had defensively, losing Virgil van Dijk for the season, and then their tremendous front three, who were phenomenal last season, haven't hit the same heights," Allen told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"They are defensively fragile and not as potent in attack."

As some eagle-eyed Liverpool fans spotted earlier in training footage and raised concerns on social media, Fabinho is missing for the Reds tonight with a "minor muscle injury".

That's the bad news. The good news is Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip are both fit to start, lining up together at centre-back.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes one other tweak from the side which started the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United on Sunday, with Sadio Mane replacing Curtis Jones to start up top alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are the headline names back for Spurs as Jose Mourinho reverts to a more familiar-looking Premier League side.

Mourinho makes 10 changes from the XI which started at Wycombe in Monday's FA Cup win.

Left-back Ben Davies, who was a doubt with a calf injury, is the only player to keep his place.

Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier usually compete for the right-back spot, interestingly both are named in the side. Wing-backs?

In the only change from Spurs' last Premier League outing at Sheffield United, Doherty comes in for the injured Sergio Reguilon.

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho on tonight's game: "We cannot expect to be playing so many matches without problems, we are going to miss a couple of players but we are ready for the game.

"Now or later doesn't make a huge difference, it is just a bit strange we finished the first 19 matches playing twice against Liverpool and didn't play Aston Villa.

"But to play Liverpool is always a motivation, especially in the last years where they were dominant in our league, winning in Europe, and amazing team."

Liverpool went three points clear at the top of the table thanks to a late winner when they met Spurs at Anfield last month.

You will remember Roberto Firmino's last-minute header breaking the visitors' resistance.

Tonight, the picture is very different.

Both teams have slipped off the pace, with Manchester City emerging as front-runners.

Manchester City lead the Premier League table on 41 points, with Liverpool (34) in fifth and Spurs (33) sixth

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could return after missing his side's past two games with a muscle strain.

He is back in full training, along with Joel Matip, who will also be assessed.

Defender Matip missed Sunday's FA Cup defeat by Manchester United, but that was thought to be merely precautionary.

Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho, who hinted at further injuries to unnamed players, confirmed that Dele Alli is unavailable because of a tendon problem.
