Bob Moss: Man City look scary today, if they had a fit striker who could score, they would walk the league.

Simon Buckley: City have over £300m of players on the bench! Difficult for teams to compete with that.

    Important interception...

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sheffield United will have taken great heart from their game in midweek. They'll have learned lessons about being clinical at both ends.

But this is a different proposition for them here at the Etihad.

James McCarthy sprays it over to Wilfried Zaha on the left but Wolves deal with it. Pedro Neto goes up the other end, taking on Luka Milivojevic but his cross is picked up by Nathaniel Clyne on the far side.

Low-key start to this game, which is to be expected given the importance of not losing it for both sides. Not a sniff of a chance yet.

    Man City 0-0 Sheffield United

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

After all the talk of a crazy season, Everton's defeat has opened the gap in the Premier League up.

Victory for Manchester City today will put them nine points clear of West Ham in fifth.

Pep Guardiola would never admit it but I suspect he is pretty confident about his side's chances just now.

All City so far but no chances. Chris Basham took a chance in the box as he tried to play Sheffield United out but he got away with it.

  13. 'I'm so disappointed'published at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-2 Newcastle

    Everton

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to Match of the Day: "We are not happy. The key point was that we didn’t have the same spirit as Newcastle. I know we have quality. The good run in the past is because we showed fantastic spirit on the pitch.

"We tried to play with quality today, but quality alone is not enough. You have to play with motivation and ambition – I think we forgot all these things at home today.

"We played Wednesday night and didn’t have time to recover. I brought in four or five players, so the reason was not tactical or physical. It was only mental.

"Our next game is a good opportunity to be back with our usual attitude. I’m so disappointed for today, but I cannot forget that this team has done really well."

  14. 'We're taking one game at a time'published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, speaking to Match of the Day: "I'm happy but also frustrated. I'm delighted for everyone associated with the club and to get two goals too, but I should have had a hat-trick today. I'm disappointed on a personal note.

"I had one chance in the first half and two in the second half. I need to be scoring those, especially the one from [Ryan] Fraser. It's about being in the right place to take the chances, which haven't been coming of late, so it was nice to take them today and get that 50th Premier League goal.

"I wasn't meant to be in the area when I scored [the opener]. We had nine or ten corners and didn’t have any joy, so I thought I’d go on a little roam. They probably weren't expecting it, but I’m delighted to get the header.

"For the second goal it was great play from Jamal [Lewis] so late on in the game. I took a bad touch, but it helped me out a little bit. All I had to do was adjust slightly.

"It was important we put a positive performance together. We're taking one game at a time. We've got another big game on Tuesday, they're not getting any easier. We'll be looking to get another positive result."

  16. 'It's been tough'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a good performance and a good team performance. Over the last few weeks in particular we've tried to work on getting after the ball, pressing higher up the pitch and being more forward-thinking. They've bought into it. I saw signs against Leeds in midweek and hopefully this will give us a bit of confidence.

"We've been working on set-pieces, and it's ironic that we got the goal from a set-piece. It was good to get one today, that's for sure.

"I'm delighted for Callum. He'll rightly get the headlines, but the effort from the whole squad behind him was good to see.

"I knew the job was going to be difficult. I walked in with my eyes wide open. I always judge people when you're up against it. You need to keep your dignity, your belief and if you can work a bit harder. It's been tough, but when everyone's fit and available we're a decent outfit. When we aren't, it becomes a bit of a struggle."

  17. 'Everyone played their part'published at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce: "Well when you come here you know you’ll have to play well to get a result.

"We’ve seen signs of improvement, in the second half against Villa and especially against Leeds. Plus, getting people back fit is really important.

"The way the players came back was excellent, we’ve had a very tough past few weeks.

"Those early goals were key. That set-piece, it’s something we’ve been trying to improve on.

"All-round today, we had some really big players. They all played their part, that was the most important thing.

"There’s no disputing, it’s been very difficult. When you’re on a bad run in the Premier League it’s difficult whether you’re Arteta or Lampard.

"You have to be brave and make these decisions. We’re trying to be more on the front foot and push up the pitch. That's something we want to do more. We’re a lot better."

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Aston Villa and Liverpool defender on Football Focus

I thought Sam Allardyce would have done more with the defence. That was his message when he arrived with us at Blackburn - keep in the game and you've got a chance.

But they've not stayed in games like they could have done and it's simple mistakes from players - Sam can't do anything about that.

  19. 'Reset needed'published at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

West Brom v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Brom midfielder Gareth Barry speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "West Brom need to reset today. There are a lot of lessons they've needed to learn but they need to start again. Today, for both teams, it's about winning the game. Even a draw for the two teams wouldn't be good enough.

"This game, and Sheffield United in midweek, West Brom need at least four points. Three points would get them a bit of confidence as well."
