Lovely touch, turn and pass from James Maddison and Jamie Vardy would have been in if it wasn't for a fine interception.

Just checking the last England XI - Bukayo Saka started against Iceland. Another to add to the mix.

Dean Smith won't be happy with this. This game could be over in the first half because of the two goals and they haven't started. You can't start football matches like that against good sides like Leicester.

I didn't know it was a surprise that a team would miss their best player quite so much.

Matt Dawson: As quality as Leicester are, this game highlights how much more Grealish does than score goals. Villa are losing the midfield, and get bullied around without his passing to control the game better. Leicester are dominating all over.

Ollie Watkins is key for Villa getting back into this game. They need to get him into the game and get more support up to him because he can cause problems.

And this is exactly what happens when a team is wholly reliant on one player. I predict zero points for Villa for the next few games.

Gareth Southgate is in the stands, making some notes. Probably trying to work out how to get Kane, Sterling, Sancho, Rashford, Maddison, Grealish, Barnes, Foden, Lingard and Mount into his team.

The Leicester duo have made a good case to be in the mix so far today.

This is better from Villa, ending the half well. Ollie Watkins with more skill to win another corer. John McGinn thrashes a shot over.

  10. 'We should be in a better position'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    FT: West Ham 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC MOTD: "Thursday was not in the legs because we started with only one player that played 90 minutes which was Eric Dier. Lucas Moura played 65 minutes on Thursday and was the best player for our team. Nothing to do with that. The way we finished the game showed it was not a physical problem that stopped us having a result.

"I think we did [have enough to win]. Losing 1-0 at half time you have to lift the players and play better in the second half which we did. The first thing that happened is that amazing and ridiculous goal. You are playing against a team that fought in the second half. They defend. We attacked and created and were unlucky."

On VAR decision for the second West Ham goal: "I didn't watch on the iPad. I am used to not celebrating goals and to accept immediately the linesman's decision. We have to wait. That is the way football is now."

On Gareth Bale: "The quality is there. Nobody can have doubts of that. The condition to play three matches in a week, is a different story. We have to try to get the best out of him. We gave him 65 minutes the other day not 90. To start today would be too much for him and a risk. He is more confident. He is starting to be more intense. He was good in the second half."

On Lucas Moura: "He is a team player. A big heart. Comes from the bench and gives everything, no regrets. Starts the game and where you need him, he is there for you. Today his performance was really good and that's because he is a team player."

On position in the table: "I feel that we are not in the position in relation to our potential. Even if I think for a long, long time that we have problems in the team that I cannot resolve by myself as a coach.

"Our potential is higher than where we are so of course there is frustration. We should be in a better positon. To think about a top four spot is getting very difficult. To play in the Europa League will give us a window of opportunity to get a Champions League spot by winning it. Of course, difficult, but it is possible."

A real chance! The corner geos through the area but Douglas Luiz returns it, good cross, and Ezri Konsa is free bang in the middle. He mistimes his jump though, so instead of planting a header on goal the ball skims off his back and away to safety.

Kyle Utterson: What a dominant start from Leicester. They have been brilliant to watch this season. I don't think Manchester City will slip up but if they do Leicester are showing we could have a title race yet.

Ross Matthewman: As a starting 11 Villa could possibly get 7th or 8th, but as a squad they’re mid table at absolute best. No quality beyond the settled starting lineup.

Tom Sharpe: Villa have been so poor since their covid outbreak, but Barkley especially just consistently gives the ball away every time he touches it. He needs to be dropped for a kick up the backside because he's dragging the team down

England are spoilt with choices where James Maddison wants to play - Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount. There are so many choices so all Maddison can do is keep doing what he's doing and hope the opportunity will come.

Spurs are nine points off the top four now, which feels a big gap.

Harvey Barnes and James Maddison link up again - they have been outstanding - and this time the number 10's shot is blocked away.

  19. 'Difficult to think about the top four'published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    FT: West Ham 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "I feel sad, obviously. I feel the result should have been a different one from what we played especially in the second half. That is my feeling and a little bit of deja vu. Their defensive line was brilliant. Their centre-backs gave us a very difficult match. We started the game with a mistake and started the second half with another one.

"The team in the second half was trying absolutely everything. We had the chances, hitting the post, great crosses across the face of goal. We had easy shooting positions to score so we should have scored more goals.

"I have spoke about this for such a long time and it is not always good to stay on the same page. I believe people who watched the game understood completely the nature of the goals we conceded.

"They fought, this is not a criticism it is to praise their spirit. They fought, they fought hard but they just fought. We were the team that tried to play but the boys were not lucky."

On Gareth Bale: "I know his quality. I cannot say everything to you, I shouldn't. I don't want. I believe as a coach I don't have to speak so much about the situation but with a Gareth Bale completely fit and ready to play 90 minutes of every game of course he would. We are trying everything with him to recover him to be at a good level. To play 65 minutes like he did Thursday then today he couldn't start the game today, he wouldn't have 90 minutes to give us but I am happy because we know what he brings, he brings his quality. Very unlucky shot because in that situation we had a double shot to score but we didn't."

On top four: "Before the game I was not looking to the table I was looking to the game and the objective was to win and when you win you look to the table to see where you are. It is very difficult to think about the top four, the top four, five six teams are getting points. It will be very, very hard, the Europa League is a great motivation to get a Champions League spot and a trophy at the same time.

"The boys fight and when the team fights you can believe good things can happen."
