Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti talking to BBC Sport: "It is an important victory - it was a difficult game - we knew it would be beforehand. We started well and controlled the game. We didn't concede chances until the last minutes when they put in a lot of effort. We deserved to win.

"We were really dangerous, it was a fantastic finish and assist and then we were really dangerous from set-pieces. We had two or three opportunities. It was a game with a lot of fight in midfield.

"Richarlison had a lot of problems in the first half of the season - he travelled a lot, and missed three games through suspension, but now he's playing a lot and we've changed his position a bit and it is better for him. Jordan Pickford did really well too. When he was involved he did really well and was calm. He is now really calm in the goal and it was what he missed in the past. He has a lot of quality.

"We have time to recover for Thursday. Allan was back after two months, we have to take care of this, it might be more difficult for him. We have to check on James, Seamus Coleman and Tom Davies for Thursday.

"We would like to touch the fourth place. I am an optimist of nature - after the defeat against Fulham we were really sad and upset, but these two victories can give us confidence for the future."

Everton

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin speaking to Sky Sports: "Massive for us, it's something we wanted to put right, we had good home form and have been on a tough run. We worked hard and earned the three pints.

"Sometimes it's not pretty and that's what the best teams do, win the game and put in a performance we can control.

"It was me and Richarlison up front together to create trouble for the two centre halves, we knew we could getting behind their high line. That's what we planned and thankfully it worked.

"They are a good side, they did a job on us at their place and I took that personally. We limited their chances and had a chance to score again, the one offside, we were close to adding to the one-goal lead. The discipline we showed to keep defending is what ultimately wins you the game.

"You have to believe, that's where we want to be. Our aspiration has to be top four until it's mathematically not possible."

Southampton

Southampton defender Jan Bednarek talking to Sky Sports: "It is very frustrating because we tried hard, and it's not going how we want it to. Hopefully it'll be a massive lesson for us, and it will improve us in the future. It's a tough moment, but we've got to work hard and stick together as a team. There is always sun after the rain.

"We miss clean sheets and we miss goals up front but all we can do it hard work. We can't complain, the easiest thing to do is to blame each other, but we need to analyse that is not working and keep learning and improving. We need to stick together and hopefully we can win the next game.

"There is always pressure. We always put pressure on ourselves. We want to win every game, so it is tough at the moment. We need to work as hard as possible, to just win however we need to."

Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti speaking to Sky Sports: "It's been a very good week, a very good performance. I really appreciate the teamwork, we were focused defensively, had a good combination in front. The performance was good and we deserved to win.

"We won a second ball and then Richarlison did a good movement, our striker was a little bit different. Dominic (Calvert-Lewin) played centre right and did in my opinion really well.

"Richarlison is a fantastic talent, we have two fantastic strikers with different characteristics.

"When you are 1-0 up the last minutes are always the same, the opposition team puts a lot of power in and we had to control. They had practically one opportunity. Pickford was good in the goal, really secure. I am really pleased, honestly.

"To fight for European places we need to improve the home run, this performance and victory can help us have a better run at home. It will be a dream to be in the top four at the end of the season. We are quite close, if we win Thursday, but the decision is long - we have to stay in our goal which is to play Europa next season."

Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to BBC Sport: "We are in a moment where we are short of scoring goals and that makes it difficult to win. We are struggling to put the ball in the net, and the problems we have at the moment with the injuries and the run that we are I saw a team that was fighting till the end. I saw spirit.

"In the final third there was a lack of punch. We had a few good moments in the first half, and then we're missing the ability to put the ball in the net when we do have a chance.

"Everybody knows that getting the first win is the most important and we are fighting for it - you could see that from the guys tonight. It was important for me tonight to see that Stuart Armstrong can play at six with Oriel Romeu out for the rest of the season.

"Thirty points are not enough to stay in the league, and we need points and maybe next weekend. Every week is an important game, it's not interesting who you play against."

"30 points are not enough to stay in the league," Ralph Hasenhuttl tells BBC Match of the Day... it means his side will have to find a win or two from somewhere.

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Sky Sports: "Not a good start, first goal, first chance, long ball and we don't defend it well. We have seen the same goal against Liverpool, it is strange we can't defend it. We had a few chances from set-pieces but are in a moment we can't score.

"In the last third, the one against one, the last pass, last duel to score is not there at the moment. Not strong enough, the last two goals we scored were Minamino and he was not there today.

"We had a good second half, the three young lads did what they could. We did OK in the second half, had a high energy level. The goals are missing at the moment and without goals it is tough to win games.

"We have to work for the luck to come back. When you don't win games you get under pressure. To have 30 points shows how much we have done this season."

Win their game in hand and Everton will jump three places into the Champions League spots...

If I was in the Southampton changing room I'd probably be a pretty fearful about going to Sheffield United. There's no doubt that losing there, to a side that have only won three games all season, will be in the back of their mind.

You thought the draw against Chelsea would kickstart their season again but it hasn't. There will be real questions for Ralph Hasenhuttl and then in due course that he'll ask his players.

Richarlison has scored in three consecutive Premier League appearances for Everton for the first time since December 2019, whilst against no side has he scored more goals in the competition than against Southampton (4 – level with Wolves and Leicester).

Since the start of last season, João Pedro (30) and Neymar (19) are the only Brazilians to score more goals in the top five European leagues than Everton's Richarlison (18, level with Gabriel Jesus).

Everton scored with the first shot of the game, the fourth time they have done this in a Premier League match this season (also v Fulham in November, v Wolves in January and v Liverpool last time out) with no side doing so on more occasions in the competition this campaign (level with Man City).

This doesn't seem to be the Southampton team that we were watching before Christmas - we thought they were competing for the top four at one point. They look like a side that has fallen off the edge of a cliff.

Not only can they not keep clean sheets, they look like they are lacking confidence. They are passing the buck in front of goal.

If Everton keep going 88 minutes without testing the goalkeeper they are going to keep finding themselves in this situation. They offered relatively little going forward.

Everton didn't do much either - but they were very assured and they know how to defend. You can see by the emotion I've just seen from Carlo Ancelotti you can see how much these three points mean.
