    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Lucas Digne is again Everton's outlet on the left but it's a bit too easy to read for Southampton at the minute, with the hosts lacking width on the other side.

The visitors win it back and Che Adams rolls Ben Godfrey before going down in the penalty area... there's a shout from the Southampton bench but nothing going.

That Richarlison goal in the ninth minute is the only shot on target for either side so far.

Saints fan here. I hate the board for what they've done to this club. If Ralph had an Aston Villa, West Ham or Everton budget Saints would be a real force. Instead we'll be playing Sheffield United next season in the Championship. We're down.

Southampton are playing some neat football and moving it well from box to box but their final delivery is lacking at the minute, with Ryan Bertrand the latest culprit after fluffing a cross.

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Gylfi Sigurdsson curls another delightful free-kick into the Southampton penalty area and Richarlison can't quite get a toe on it. Bigger shoe size and he might have had a second goal...

As a Saints fan..I can say Ralph should be as safe as houses .doing s great job with admirable principles. On a tough trot now but when you experience the deepest valleys you appreciate the highest mountains ...

Southampton are very much in this game. Everton have probably dominated the last 20 minutes, but one bad tackle, and one good set piece and the delivery of James Ward-Prowse you are still going to have chances.

You thought Leicester and Liverpool had injury crises? Not a patch on us. Now whether a high intensity pressing game with short turnaround times leads to more injuries. That's a good question.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has his head in his hands as Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost turns that wicked James Ward-Prose delivery into his own net.

In fact, it is a great defensive header. Both the England striker and Richarlison have already shown tonight how their aerial prowess is an asset in defence too.

Since his Premier League debut in January 2012, Gylfi Sigurdsson has provided 48 Premier League assists, the seventh-best haul in that time (behind Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Christian Eriksen, Mesut Ozil, Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling).

As much as I like Southampton's approach and style (as a neutral) I feel sorry for anyone who manages them. They're a 'selling club' through and through which, whilst keeps them in a good financial position, meant they'll never progress up the league year on year.

What a whip from James Ward-Prowse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has to head it behind for a corner. Brilliant delivery from the Southampton skipper.

The ball eventually ends up in Jordan Pickford's hands after smart feet from Moussa Djenepo. Much better from the visitors.

It was a clever free-kick by Everton, trying to manipulate the Southampton defence because it is tricky trying to time your round against a standing defence.

If Southampton do that again, I'd be disappointed if Everton haven't worked that out by the third time.

  15. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 27 mins

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Yep, quick check and the goal is ruled out for offside.

It was a lovely delivery to the back post but Mason Holgate had just gone too early and was in an offside position when he helped it back to Michael Keane.

    Good line from Southampton.

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Mason Holgate goes down under pressure from Nathan Redmond and this is a dangerous position to concede a free-kick for the Saints. Everton love a headed goal under the guidance of assistant Big Dunc this season...

Nice balance to the Everton team now Allan is back in the side. Sometimes the back four can be left exposed when Andre Gomes or Abdoulaye Doucoure are left to mop up.

Now they can shift forward and link with Gylfi Sigurdsson ahead of them.

  20. 'Southampton lacking confidence'published at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2021

Southampton have got all the space in the full-back area, and they are just not brave at the moment.

They are lacking confidence, they have popped it around, and beat the press, but their instinct is to go backwards and have to repeat the process.
